I read Snow Crash fairly recently and if you put yourself into the *book's* world and don't read today's world into it the book holds up quite well. It's been 15 years or so since I read Neuromancer but if I recall enough about it I would say a similar thing is also probably true.
Well, Do Androids... has a lot of great stuff in it that could never fit into a film. PKD has several books where there is a new religion (in Androids it's called Mercerism) and a studio would never let that get into a finished film. The book also really drove home the point that the earth was ruined and that everyone was leaving, while this is only a point you get from the film if you've read the book. Blade Runner made it essentially into a adventure story because it had to... it's great on its own but it's more inspired by the book than a full adaptation.
It's really too bad about Solarius... I believed that was a really great movie of a russian movie that, while ground breaking, will put you to sleep in 5 minutes...
Not Spielberg. He really screwed up "AI" simply by going too long. He insisted on doing the whole treatment by Kubrick but I believe Kubrick would have had the foresight to know that the whole ending part of that movie was extraneous. If Spielberg would have simply left the story off where the android "kills" himself if would have been a great movie. He needs to keep away from sci-fi now...
Molly was in the Johnny Mnemonic short story but was replaced in the movie specifically so it wouldn't hurt a movie retelling of Neuromancer. Of course that was so many years ago and studios are so fond of changing details it's hard to tell if Molly will show up or if something else will be written in.... though I am not sure it really could be Neuromancer without Molly Millions...
I don't think that is crazy at all. Both the highways and internet are essential for interstate commerce. Maybe the could be more neutral that way and actual "voting by feet" could actually help over reaching ISP policies. The way everything is the market isn't going to solve these problems when so many people can only go to monopolists like Comcast for any sort of modern "broadband".
If traffic is "spiking" and causing infrastructure some problems its time to make a better infrastructure. What the traffic actually *is* should be irrelevant.
The original report is about extortion, not about infrastructure. Blame a company flush with cash and charge them for nothing. As long at Netflix is paying their bandwidth provider they need to shut up.
This is why I believe the "I only get paid when there is a settlement for you" lawyering itself should not be legal. If you make a greedy claim you should still have to pay your lawyer.
I love these "congress should..." posts. While I agree most of the time and they are mostly for common sense law to protect the public interest everyone forgets that our congress is captured by corporate interests and will do *nothing* of the sort.
Congress should deal with the broken patent system. Congress should make sure that individuals speech isn't squelched by corporate entities on the Internet. etc.. etc.. It can go on for pages. Nothing is going to get done while lobbyists are basically running the systems.
But what about precedent? It can have as much force as law.
You're right... this could (and should) be laughed out of court, but if they win any part of it then there is a lot of incentive to ask for the same measures at other schools and a very good chance they can win it.
I wasn't very clear in the post... I am more interested in why people believe in things that are *factually* wrong where there is plenty of evidence that it is factually wrong. Such as the "Obama is a Muslim" thing. I am not talking about conspiracy theory of people believing he is a "secret Muslim," more like people taking it as a fact. I have a tad little more sympathy for those that believed there was evidence that he wasn't born a U.S. citizen. There's other examples and, sorry conservatives, they tend to be on your side. You can say what you want about "libs," but they do at least try to be factual in larger percentage than some conservatives.
One election cycle I was only watching C-SPAN for coverage. It was amazing how differently I was thinking from everyone else. When I would change to CNN to a quick look the would be talking "strategy" or have "experts" talking out of the butt as usual and it was TOTALLY different from what I was thinking and the questions that came up in my mind. The media and these "experts" aren't called "opinion leaders" for nothing.
Could this help explain some of the wildly wrong beliefs some folks have today? So so blinded by Limbaugh or their Reverend or whoever and their opinion carries SO much weight that you can't get them to accept proof?
In the idiot-filled corporate world it is the job of people like Kaspersky to scare empty-headed CEOs and Congrespeople by puffing themselves up as an "expert" and making wild predictions and promises in the hope of getting some money for products that will work marginally at best. He's just doing his job... so hate the system AND the idiots behind it.
I personally believe that rise of "HR Methodologies" is one of the major problems we face in the U.S. today. Worse, no one outside of slashdot is really talking about it. There is proof that HR drones are abusing the H1-B system and still it is not addressed in our media. Why... because they subscribe to the exact same methodology and they don't see it as a problem.
Cheney is worse than most Germans and Japanese because he did what he did in the name of profit and pure greed. At least most German and Japanese thought they were fighting a good fight while Dick Cheney is cynically profiting on death and destruction.
Really... they stopped being a network for the fans when they dropped MST3k for more "mainstream" audiences. That was a good indicator that the executives of the channel stopped caring about people like me.
They've had some good stuff on occasion since then, but that's where it really started to die for me. Having a network where you could watch "Lost In Space" in the middle of the day as well as *thoughtful* new content was cool, but they don't run their network like that any more.
Have you forgotten? The opinion of the average voter has no place in the legislatures in the U.S.

Fire Wolf Blitzer!

No wonder so many people like this talentless little sh--head.

it's run by simpletons just like everything else in the U.S. right now...
I personally believe that rise of "HR Methodologies" is one of the major problems we face in the U.S. today. Worse, no one outside of slashdot is really talking about it. And he's Marxist... whatever that is supposed to mean.

With their habit of letting the public beta test, I would steer way clear of this... literally.

Then they can make Megamonsterdragonfrog vs. Interstellar Goldfish with even better production values.
This whole story is a joke, right?
but but Regulation is bad... m'kay?
