No.. never mind. Don't answer that. The people that I meet every day that are in their own little world is actually contradictory evidence. There are still plenty of people out there willing to argue that the corporations aren't in control. A lot of the facts are not apparent until you dig for them, and they're too busy picking up the kids from daycare and mowing their lawns to bother...
But corporations *ARE* people in the eyes of law. Even though it wasn't a precedent that was argued in a case (it was a footnote in a case added by a clerk, actually) it is accepted by the courts as precedent, which is what the recent election law ruling saying corporations can spend unlimited money was all about.
Knownothings call for constitutional amendments for stuff like taking away gay rights all the time... why does no one call for a constitutional amendment to REVERSE corporate personhood? It is probably one of the most important constitutional issues of our time and no one talks about it.
And we talk about "strict consitutionists..." When you do the research, there is plenty of evidence that the framers of the constitution did not believe in corporate rights in ANY way. They were VERY sceptical of corporate rights because of their dealings with the East India Company.
We are living through the looking glass when it comes to these issues today. Watch how this goes... people that are for corps. spending as much money as they want in elections say it makes things transparent... but give corporations privacy rights and all of a sudden they can spend all they want on any candidates and don't have disclose what they spend to anyone... and the corporations get even more rights!
In a similar vein, one thing I have always thought was funny about anime is that a very common character reaction to learning about aliens is just that. So many characters in anime don't freak out when they learn a character is an alien... they are just like "oh, ok," and go about their usual lives and treat the alien like everyone else. Another good example is Neuromancer. At the end Wintermute finds out there is alien life and the reaction is "No Shit?" and the subject is dropped.
I have been a customer of ThinkGeek for a long while... and I hope that they really show where their values are and DROP BuckyBalls as product. I've always believed that they took more notice of this type of stuff and tried to stock items that didn't participate in this type of corporate asshattery. I hope I don't get proved wrong...
anyone that calls anything about our government "socialist" is simply a troll whose opinion means nuts.
We live in the most pro-corporate state in world history. It doesn't matter which "side" is in control of the U.S. government... whoever is in charge is on some lever a corporatist right now. Socialism is a buzzword to whip shallow thinking people into and uproar.
Legally they *ARE* people. This is the major problem in the U.S. today. They get all the advantages of "personhood" without any of the disadvantages plus a whole pool of money, so making corps. people legally essentially gives them more rights than anyone else.
I am really confused... why am I the only one that thinks we should have a constitutional amendment to end Corporate Personhood? No one ever mentions this... especially not in our media. Hmmm... I wonder why.
There is an option C... write in "Donald Duck" or something like that. If enough people did it then it would throw the election into chaos. Or just write in "None of the Above," with the same outcome.
I think there ought to be a "none of the above" choice on every ballot. If that choice won it would be like calling a "mistrial" on the election and the whole process would have to start over. Something has to be done about the fact that we are simply getting the choice of $Idiot_1 and $Idiot_2.
There are plenty of ways in the U.S. for a parent to decide what they want their kid to see without taking choices away from me as an adult. Again... it takes effort. Every device out there has parental controls... the finest grain parental controls we ever have had... so use them. And if you don't want your kid to see certain things then it's YOUR responsibility to keep him/her off of my computer that has parental controls turned off, not the other way around.
You've hit on one of the primary contradictions in thinking in the U.S. of today. Most people are for the free market making decisions... that is until it makes a decision they don't like for some reason. Then they go to the government to "protect their interests" or to protect themselves through legislation. So many of the stories on Slashdot, especially the governmental and corporate stories, come down to that... a corporation or other group of people who were so gung-ho about the free market when things were going THEIR way now want governmental protection now that the market has changed. See also: FCC. See also: RIAA. See also: MPAA.
We're living in the era of no responsibility in this country. At work everything is the fault of the corporation you're working for (convenient since a paper entity can't go to jail). At home it's the media's fault, the teacher's fault, the government's fault depending on the day of the week. No one is at fault for anything right now in the U.S.
well that's BS. "Fundamentally Transforming" government would involve kicking the corporate interest out and actually listening to the grass roots. Neither side is doing that.
You might be correct about the side issues... and we're mostly talking about side issues by design.
Both "sides" a corporatists. The law and the courts are taking the corporate side on all the REAL major issues. There is no one in power in government that is taking a side against the corporatists.
I was there. I am ever going to another Wizard World con. They are crap... the last time I went to Chicago Comic Con it was not a Wizard Con, and it was great...
It's no surprise they allowed him to be there. There was very little to do with Comics at this Comic Con, and the celebrities were a joke.
Every industry fights like this when their gravy train is destroyed by new technology. The bigger the gravy train was, the more litigious it gets. It's a lot easier to pay a lawyer to scream than it is to redesign the business model that you thought 30 years ago was going to last for all times.
And THAT'S offensive...
I was ridiculed YESTERDAY for saying this...
Does anyone not know this already?

Republicans are usually the ones honest about it... The democrats are the same, they just keep it quieter.

it would involve effort on the parent's part. FAIL.

look for an anti-corporation point of view on ANY newscast.

It's the *Democratic* party, jackass.
strong words in the staff room
the accusations fly!

The Onion has a lot more accurate information.

I was there too. The booing was the best moment of what I thought was a rather lackluster con.

I thought the motto was "Where DID You Want To Go Today?"
That was corporate decision making. Don't get me confused with the corporate wankheads. I'm not in favor of THAT, either.
