Then you take off your Linux Zealot glasses and compare it to OS X or windows, you find that Google is probably right to not release GPU acceleration. I have found off and on that we get a lot of silly glitches happens with GPU acceleration, artifacts are common, values not moving at the right speed... For the advanced user, we know how to deal with it, move a component etc... but for an end user it could be a major issue, and turn people off to the product, and it is better off going without until it works well.
People do not trust science. They are more apt to believe that the numbers are made up fill some agenda. On the Right you got them having issues with Climate change and evolution. They see it as fake science made by their opponents to force their agenda of taking things away from people and a push towards atheism, figure with "God" out of the way they can push their agenda with impunity.
On the left you have GMO food, and non-organics food. All the science points that there isn't any danger to these foods, however they will stick to their guns as the science is obviously have been altered by corporations as to keep their profit up.
In short if you tell someone that they are wrong, that means you are part of some conspiracy to hide the truth.
I think the real problems happened when radio shack went all Cell phone, and not even Radio Shack Cellphones, but generic brands that you can get anywhere.
Back during their hayday, sure you got components and hobby stuff, but you also got the Tandy and TRS/80's their own line of computers, which was handy at the time, as you could build your own electronics to add to the serial and parallel ports and make fancy stuff like D/A converters, to play music.
I am envious too. However I don't think I should be complaining that a bunch of people mostly who have the skills to do the job, got lucky enough, to get the job there. If I am too envious I would try to apply to Google.
For most criminals, it is a huge leap from stealing a phone to murdering a person. Most criminals steal either due to desperation (the really need the money, often for drugs) or convenience (the phone was was just sitting there unlocked, or at least an easily broken into).
Jumping to murder offers a new set of risks. 1. If the person knows he is going to get killed, he will most likely fight back, and chances are the thief will get hurt or killed in the process, if hurt he will end up in jail. As it was self defense.
2. Police will take notice and actually try to find the criminal. Petty theft, the cops are just there to give you an insurance report, they will not try to find your goods, if someone is murdered (especially if they are a non-gang member or unfairly not a minority).
More to the point. Google offered this service as a benifit to their employees. In a world where are employee benifits are getting whacked every year in both unioned and non unioned shops. Why should we get so outrage that a company is offering benifits?
It is really sad how the US cannot come with a good strong Nuclear Energy Policy and rules and regulations.
Being that voters on both sides a full of complete ignorance that they just make it worse.
The Democrats who support environmentalists (Scientists) and "environmentalists" (Tree Huggers) often get them confused and will be happy to believe that nuclear energy is like a controlled atomic bomb, thus must be decommissioned at all cost.
The Republicans who are in bed with the Oil industry will sometimes tolerate nuclear energy, however do not have the guts to push for it as it will step on the Oil Industry.
So what happens, we get regulations that are overly strict in the wrong areas and have gaping problems in the other.
Is nuclear energy a Clean Safe and Too cheap to meter? No, not by a long shot. However we have a trade off of saving CO2 output (our current big problem) with Storing and keeping safe hazardous waste for a thousands of years (a future problem, which could get better over time). There are a lot of safety protocols in place and newer designs get safer, I doubt we will see a nuclear explosion, however accidents could create nuclear radiation leaked which are toxic, that said coal spews out a lot of toxic stuff already. These safety protocols comes at a cost, so yes you will still need to meter to pay for the upkeep and running. However it is a source of energy that can be produces without killing the budget.
Nuclear along with Wind, Solar, Hydropower should all be added to the American clean energy strategies.
Grrrr another person who is so furious over what Other People EAT!
Food, is both piratical in giving you energy to live, and emotional as it give you joy to eat something in particular.
Now your body has a craving system in it. When things are good it means you want food to fill a particular nutrient imbalance in your system. However if you grow up being fed junk food, this craving system gets out of whack. Where it says I need some protein it would say I want a doughnut, because while growing up on junk food, it was available and it at least made you feel better.
Diets are not about people being smart or stupid. That is why they are hard to manage, because you get cravings and if craving matches are not really in sync you may be eating 3 doughnuts to get the protein of say an egg. So after you craving is met you get an excess of other stuff your body really doesn't need that much of.
However for most people I know who look 10 year younger then their peers (Myself included), I find it is less about Diet, but Drugs, Smoking and Alcohol usage.
That is a stupid answer. I have worked hard, studied and got a college degree, so I can do such work. That is like saying a Doctor after 4 years of med school, should work for free, and make a living tending bars.
I write software during business hours, after this time, I have other things in my life I like to follow. Working an other job, will mean I will not have much time to work on software. Thus I will not get much work done.
So I am working at a sub-optimal job for my skills + I am not working optimally at what I am good at. All in all a net loss.
To make my money, I sell my time to the organization and they own the rights to the code, they can do whatever they want with it (Sell it, offer it as a SaaS, etc...). Most of the time they will not make it open source.
Who will pay you for your time? If the software that I write is free?
Your model works if you are going to build software for a particular end user, but if you are trying for a group of people, than who is going to be the one that pays the bill.
Organization X, Y, and Z needs a product to do something. I expect other similar organization would want this too. The work will take me 5 months to complete. I have a relationship with X but not with the others. I build for X they pay me for their time. Now normally for that they own the software and can choose to give it to the others or sell it or just hold onto it. Organization X who had paid me a lot of money to make the product usually doesn't want me to give it away to their competitors. So their competitors get the advantage at companies X expense.
For plumbers you can't duplicate your work at near 0 cost. So your analogy is faulty.
I live a modest life, how ever I do need to pay the bills. For the most part I make my living doing stuff against the ideals of the GPL. Here is why. 1. I am not charismatic enough to gain peoples attention, so I will not make a living off of speeches and publications.
2. The software I write tends to fill a small niche, so it will not gain mass popularity outside that niche. So my products won't make a good resume item. And the owners of the niche mostly will not donate to my efforts, if they can get it for free. As well wouldn't be distributed on most systems.
3. The software I write tends to be user friendly and intuitive to use. So consulting off the product or service isn't a good way either.
4. The ease of Internet Download makes shipping of media seem barbaric.
Now I would love to make all my stuff open source, however I do need to live, and I prefer if possible not to live off of government handouts. I am a software developer by heart and nature, doing it as a hobby would be a waste of my talents. So how would a 100% GPL developer operate in a small business settings?
Well I would expect a roboarioauto would probably fail to start if there was anything wrong, or something happened unexpected on the last flight, and demand maintenance.
I am sorry a Facebook.com email address is rather unprofessional, unless you actually work at Facebook.
Why is Facebook.com more unprofessional then say gmail.com? Well for one, Facebook is in generally more informal, it is all about gossip and keeping contacts with your friends. While you use Google for real work too.
For your personal email it still needs a degree of professionalism, because that is what is going to be on your resume, and with other non-work related business contact. Your work email isn't that good because you can change jobs and your email goes away. The same if you use your ISP's email address.
Hotmail.com, AOL.com, Yahoo.com all still work too. However you can sometimes seem dated.
outlook.com could work too, but you seem like a Microsoftie.
I myself prefer to have my own domain name, then link it to whatever email service that I like a the time.
Cites are a wreck because they can't get new companies to come in. Companies wont come in because the Cities are a wreck.
Cities can't bring in money to fix themselves without help from companies. You can't force a company to move in to your impoverished city or else.
Now the only options are is a State/Federal fund to revitalize the city, and you end up with a crap shoot to if companies will move in or not. Or you decommission the city, know down many of its buildings (ignore the historical societies), then resell the land back for new development. And hopefully new growth will happen with better urban planning in the future.
That is the problem. There are people who have a lot of assets then they are people who are rich. Farmers have a lot of assets, Expensive equipment, lots of land, however they are barely making it because all their profit goes into assets. That is different then say a Fund Manager who lives in a swanky house, and uses his money into living a more lavish life style.
How is that like any other NY Governor. It is not like they ever take Upstate seriously.
The biggest problem is that New York like to keep their State Income Tax low. So they push the responsibility to the Towns, who charge for property tax. Property Tax, doesn't really fairly cover the population so a Farmer with a lot of land, will get a heavy tax, while a millionaire who is renting, will pay no tax (directly)
People do evil things, People do evil things to try to push themselves up in the world. In a capitalistic society, they will use capitalism to their advantage, using money to increase their power. In a Communist or Socialist society, they will use the government as a means to do Evil things, to get themselves up in society.
Capitalism is also used for good. Creating a system where you are not bound by class to improve your life, if you manage your money well, then you could go to the next level. The Bottom Line concept is popular with Publicly Traded Companies, Public Trading companies in many ways are bastardizing the idea of Capitalism, by allowing large numbers of people control a company, thus making the company far more complex to please its share holder. That said, there a numbers of large and small private companies that doing quite well.
Your view of capitalism is very ignorant on what capitalism and socialism is beyond a high school education.
Economics isn't that backwards, It is about analyzing how societies share wealth and deal with the fact not everyone can have everything. The principal concept of Supply and Demand, is very elegant idea, and has shown to be true time and time again. The more you have of something the cheaper it is, the more people wants something the more expensive it will become. When the supply price, matches the demand price, we get a point where both sides are happy. Now we laws and regulations to try to knock some things off balance. Copyrights for information for example. a Book or Software can be copied infinite of times thus making the supply infinity thus making all information free (Which would be bad, as there is a lot of work, from a small supply of people who can do it) so the Copyright is a way of keeping the supply down. We also have governments who either put price caps, or subsidize services such as energy. Because the demand is so high, that if left alone the prices would be too high. Now these changes throw stuff off its equilibrium and we often get tradeoffs from it, such as problems with sharing information, or less then superior service.
The biggest problem with capitalism today, isn't too much or not enough regulations, but lack of education on dealing with it. People should really learn to spot if they really need the product or service or not and find alternatives if they think it is unfair. Too many people are complaining that life is so bad, however they will not change their behaviors to make things better. I will stay at the job where I think I am under paid, until I get laid off, not look for better work, or start your own business. I will go to the movies and complain how much it costs, vs waiting for it to go out on video or wait for it to go to the budget theaters. There is little to no education on Advertising, and how to catch the common methods they use, as to make you want the product.
But they haven't measured and documented it. So it wasn't science, it was hearsay. There are a lot of truths out there that science hasn't gotten to yet. Heck only a few years ago they calculated how scotch tape rips.
Then you take off your Linux Zealot glasses and compare it to OS X or windows, you find that Google is probably right to not release GPU acceleration. While Android is off the Linux Kernel, it isn't GNU/Linux.
It is like saying iOS is actually BSD Unix, and the BSD Unix has a huge market share too.
The use of the Kernel is only part of the OS, and in many ways while it is the core of the OS, it isn't necessarily a major component to it.
More to the point. Google offered this service as a benifit to their employees. In a world where are employee benifits are getting whacked every year in both unioned and non unioned shops. Why should we get so outrage that a company is offering benifits?
Yes, however a nuclear reactor is built to generate power. an A-Bomb was built to explode.

Well the French and the English have had their centuries of fighting each other for political and social dominance.
In short the English Won. However the French while military peaceful with the English will refuse to give up any social dominance they might have.
We see this in America. as Hispanics are growing, there is a massive push back to make sure that "'Merica don't be a Spanish Speaking country"
In short the French still see English as a bunch of barbarians, and they feel that they must keep civilization in spite of their dominance.
