People don't like free market because they are not perfect. However they tend to correct over time, which can take years which is a lot longer then most people are willing to wait. So from day one the Government is tinkering with the free market to try to smooth it out, because you cannot win elections in the mist of chaos. But unlike tight government control free market will correct itself. Government control has a smaller group of people emotionally invested in being right not matter the cost.
To help the free market fix itself better you need smart consumers. People seem to think they are entitled to get goods and services. If you don't like the terms, then don't pay for it. A lot of the stuff those Evil corporations are pushing to you can charging an arm and a leg is stuff you really don't need anyways. If you don't pay for it, and others don't either. Prices will go down or they will stop offer that service.
The problem is the Republicans are Dumbing Americans so they cannot be intelligent consumers. And the Democrats are trying to give people a way to get the stuff they don't need because the population is too stupid to realize they don't need it.
Take Basic Shape, Rotate it, Apply Color, Apply a Texture, Bevel, and Apply Shadow, Create a new layer and repeat. I can do this stuff easier in HTML5 then in GIMP.
It isn't that this cannot be done in GIMP but it doesn't make it easy to do so.

I have seen other people who were note very intelligent as kids, however they were in a supportive environment, they grew up and got Masters and PHD degrees, and/or working at jobs that require strong mental abilities. I am not talking about kids and what they got for grades in school, but when they were kids you tried to explain a topic to them, either they clicked and got it, or stared at you in puzzlement. However because of the environment they exercised their minds and got better. The same as people with genetic tenancies to be stronger then others. If you just watch TV vs. going out and exercising, will have more of an impact then your genetic predisposition.

I would agree. an iPhone like device would have sucked in 1991. Lack of multi-touch displays would really have limited to very basic gestures, it would probably just be click interface. Most people didn't have internet access in 1991. If they did there wasn't to many non-geeky thing to do on it. Apps would need to sync with a PC over slow serial connections. The apps would not be much more then a Calendar, a note book and an advanced clock. For its price you will have a hard time convincing a person to use it over a wristwatch, and a day planner.
Think of a Palm Pilot but only bigger and slower and less memory.
At the time you had a PC. the Laptop will be a generation behind (286's when the 386 are popular), usable but noticeably slower and really expensive. A mobile device is actually 3 generations behind the PC, So your 486 PC may have a mobile device that does what an XT 8088 can do.
Today for the most part these gaps still exist expect for the laptop is only a 1/2 generation behind a PC. But say you have a Core i7 desktop your iPhone 4s would be about the same as a core duel processor. Today this isn't that big of a deal because we have seen a slowdown in software inovation that uses the newer processors. New Computers run the same stuff as old computers but just faster.

V.S. Vilifying them and force them into making these same changes decades later.
4. Choosing political sides, Ok the Democrats supported your idea first. Don't pandering to them or do a lot of selected reasearch to show that their political ideas are better then the Republicans. All we did was made it a politically motivated issue.
5. Little congratulating on improvements. When a company produces something that is better there is little follow up to help support them. Thus making products that people quickly get tired of or worse don't really know about.
I have worked at different places from conservative shops to free wheeling start ups. If a woman can do a good job she gets as much respect as a guy who did just as good of a job.

If you raise the cost of data storage, then companies will have to raise their costs to their customers. Customers will buy from countries which data is cheaper. Taxed country will loose jobs, to those other countries.
Here in America, we tend to put taxes on Sin Tax (for items we really don't need or are overall negative to our well being, Cigaretts, Gas, etc...). But Cheap Storage seems to benefit most everyone. Why Tax it?
I am actually a political moderate. I see the need for government services that support a greater good that is unprofitable by private industry, and I see the need to make sure government doesn't get to big and start taxing us for things we really don't need, or is too expensive then it really is worth.
