I can see for the story plot having the Force can make you good enough to stop a bullet or a light pulse. However If I was a general in the empire I would just use explosives, like a grenades. So they can block it but it still explodes in their face. The light saber is a very inefficiency weapon for the modern barbaric times.
Apple is the biggest pusher of every concept that's ever been criticized on Slashdot.
Or is it Slashdot criticizes most every concept that Apple creates (Because it is a Apple or Microsoft...)
Most Slashdotters have a very critical view on technology (Too critical in my opinion), and if this technology hasn't been completed by their own camp it is considered a threat. Or if some popular person in their camp does some crazy rant they will overnight change their own opinion and go with them. I like to look at the Negativity towards cloud computing... Before RMS rant on how bad it was, Slashdot had an on average positive attitude towards it, then right after RMS rant Slashdot switched almost overnight to hating it as it was pure evil.
Slashdotters overall hate corporations unless somehow they are in their camp. Google is hit or miss, IBM Slashdoters love, Microsoft can do no good.
Apple fixed a bug in their code... It is a good thing! Less bugs and security holes in a product makes it better... Unless you are just pining on having Apple fail miserably you should be happy it is fixed.
Because you want to disrupt the lives of millions of people by making a new strain of malware? That is beyond Black Hat that is just wrong.
Black hats break into the system and disrupt it to force someone to fix a security problem. Gray hats break into the system to prove that they can. White hats break in to their own systems in labs and report the vulnerability.
The fact that Apple fixed the problem before it got out of control is a good thing. The fact that most Jail Breaking is due to hacking the phone it is usually just a side effect. I more then expect hackers to try to find a new hole to get into, to both create a jail break and to spread chaos around the world because because they got angry at some posts by fan boys in the internet a decade back.
Also as a person who never really excelled at school. The problem with a lot of schooling is the fact most of the testing is based on memorization. Math been taught by telling the kid to remember the formula vs. Trying to teach them how the formula was approached. Which is interesting because I have talked to a lot of people who Say I HATE math and I cant do it and the only math class I did well was when they actually did proofs. Perhaps because my minor was focused in Discrete mathematics but I think understanding how math works is more important then going threw the motions to solve the answer.
If we are going to mathematical about it. What we really need to do is find the average of our use and calculate the amount of variance our usage has, then convert that into a standard deviation and get something that can handle 2 Standard Deviations faster then the average... That that should be good.
No you may not be the exception to the rule... If you have choices of two tools that can do the job just as well but differently you will probably go with one and defend your choice on why you thought it was the better tool.
"Would a fanboi of the philips screwdriver use it instead of a flathead on a flathead screw?" No they wouldn't get Flathead screw or use a flathed to get the screw out and replace it with a Phillip screw, they would use Phillip screws even though they may strip on him, and then admit that a Stripped Head screw is worth not having your screw driver slip out the head.
"So why use Windows in a case where Linux is superior, and Windows where Linux is superior?" Because to a fanboi Windows or Linux will always be the right tool, and will take whatever trade-offs and weight them less.
When you are a fanboi you don't see those limitations because your scale of measuring the goods and bad may be off. And you may not realize it.
That is because Supermodels actually like Doritos more, But if they are in the house they will eat them and become fat. They cannot stand the vial nastiness of Cheetos thus will prefer men who eat those as it will not effect their diet and livelihood.
Although Supermodel is an interesting profession... Most people get jobs to put food on the table, The requirement for a Supermodel is to keep as much food off the table as possible.
It is probably a protective strategy, to defend our choices. As we choose a mate we will try to protect them as to secure the next generation. Evolution probably went where this over-generalization of the effect was good enough, and it didn't need to be particular down to having to be a mate, just a choice.
Hanging on to the Idea that your OS choice is superior to the others, and the need to protect it against other ideas, falls under the same emotion. Failure to do so may cause other OS's to become more popular then you have wasted your time and resources on that choice. But if you defend it and keep it going then your choice was valid and good and you didn't wast your life on your OS choice.
The same with religion, Religions that expand by converting adults are often have members with more Zeal then people who grew up with a Religion because that was what their family practiced. Or with someone who decided to become an Atheist, they will often be more hateful towards people who believe in religion.
I personalty try to catch myself becoming a fan-boy and make sure I say sensible about it... Although I don't always succeed as it is such a primitive emotion I feel it has helped me keep in good graces with a lot of people.
Pricing everywhere is based on trying to get the balance of getting the most money net. So if you raise your prices too much you will loose customers, if you drop prices to be too small you will get a lot of customers but the total will not be optimal.
Besides if you look at the books those big profits are more often then not reinvested in the company for growth. Sans an expensive CEO fee.
Economy of scale often takes into place. As Netflix grows bigger Mailing becomes less profitable to a point where it cost more to ship a DVD where it use to be their bread and butter.
A typical Manager can directly manage 8 people effectively. So every 8 people hired they need a new manager. every 8 managers there needs to be a new upper manager and we continue.... We can assume that each management level will get paid more then the one that is under them. So as the business grows you get more bureaucratic. Now this is often balanced due to the fact the more you produce the better prices you can get in bulk. So depending on how the numbers work out you could see that that DVD mailing past a particular size will not scale well and become unprofitable at the current rate.
When they switch to streaming the problem still exists however a human can normally manage 25-100 computers which allows the business to grow with less bureaucratic problems.
I have little tolerance towards people who rage over good/services who's goal is for entertainment. Basically as the parent stated He didn't like the rate and didn't want to pay it so he left. I am OK, not happy but I think it is still worth it, with the rate increase so I will continue to pay it.
Video Games, Movies, Games... They are just for entertainment if they get in the way of the rest of your life then they should be dropped.
Well they have more time to know their components better. The iPhone users are too busy with their higher quality apps. The android phone you just got you shortly realize you cant do much so you spend time reading the tech specs to make you feel happy you put money in such a device.
How much stuff do you purchase without hours of research and knowing the full detail on what you are getting? Most people don't know the difference between 3g and 4g except for it suppose to be faster. The iPhone 4 is faster then the 3g so it must be on 4g. If you are not interested in the area, there is a degree of ignorance that you deal with. I bet those people will look at our purchasing decisions on some other product and laugh at us for choosing such a product because we weren't fully educated. Eg. Snooty Wine people.
To expect anything common across version numbers. iPhone to iPhone 3g to iPhone 4 (Where was the iPhone two) Windows 3.1, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7 Solaris 2.5, Solaris 2.6, Solaris 7, Solaris 8, Solaris 9 8088, 8086, 286, 386, 486, Pentium, Pentium II, Pentium III, Pentium IV, Pentium V (I have gotten lost after that, where it went insane) Don't get me started about the mess of Google and Mozilla started.
Lets be nice to consumers... Major.Minor.Patch Major = A major upgrade New features comparability with previous Major number will have a fair to a lot amount of issues, or at least a lot of new features that makes the product distinctive. Minor = A small number of new features usually low hanging fruit type of development, Fixing of serious reaching security issues, or bug fixes. Patches = A small bug fix or security fix.
Most people can learn, even if they are not overly concerned about computers. But by constantly messing with the version number schemes it messes up people especially if they haven't been following your product.
Why was the iPhone 3g called 3g because it had 3g support. The iPhone 4 is really the iPhone 3g 2. However it is easy for people to make the confustion of the iPhone 4 with 4g. First because of the last version name and the same time adds are coming out for a 4g network.
Why would it, anyone with reasonable intelligence wouldn't believe a word on Slashdot anyways. Slanted Stories, Comments from numbskulls like me who just debate people and often will just play devils advocate just to keep things interesting and fight off boredom.
It can alert other drivers, it can alert you when there is a car approaching you from behind, heck it can inform you that you should pull over for a bit as you are really holding up traffic. But really lets fix one problem at a time. First lets get Car Safety up, then we can go back on to bike safety... However most of that means just giving a bikers lane
Yes RIMs are about Business. But the iPhones and Androids are entering the business field too, and they are entering very fast. As they are a Good enough phone for work plus a toy after hours.
We often forget about the power of Good Enough when you compare it against excellent. When we make decisions to buy x over y. We usually have a feature count, vs. feature quality. Especially if the matching features are good enough per match. The iPhone out Featured the Blackberry. Blackberry had some features superior (Really nice keyboard, battery life for example) to the iPhones but... the iPhone was good enough to make such a feature superiority a minor detail. Then after you get the market share and you become a leader, then you will need to be either a Lot Better (bigger feature count of good enough or better) or a lot cheaper where you feel that you got a better deal.
I often don't have respect for many "charitable organizations" as many of them are ineffective and are usually just some sounding board for a group of peoples political beliefs, and do a small set of actual good work so they can get funding, so they can make a living (Often a very wealthy one) being self righteous.
However the Gate Foundation I do have respect, They do things the right way, They figure were can I put money that will have the most benefit, and make logical decisions. For example they made some people quite angry when their researched showed that Teachers without Masters degree taught students just as well as ones with them. So the Gates Foundation will not wast their money trying to get teachers with Master Degrees, and that schools are wasting their money forcing their teachers to get master degrees.
"marginally more legitimate income tax" I don't see how. The more resources you have the more you are able redistribute your real income and make you look poor to the IRS. A sales tax in many ways will tax the rich more, as the rich will buy more taxable stuff.
Which ones? The framers had a lot of debates and disagreements over what should and shouldn't be put in it. A lot of these things over government control and lack of thus. The Elastic Clause which takes into account issues that they haven't though of....
We like to think of the Constitution as made from a bunch of guys with the same ideas and agenda's not so. You go back and look at lot of those old debates you will see a lot of trends what goes on today. Some of them well look at what happens today and would applaud it as improvement and others would cringe... Just like people today.
Also a lot of things have changed that was considered unheard of, or at least impracticable today. Internet Shopping 18th/19th century is closely resembled by order by mail. In an era before Rail Roads or an effective distribution system to a consumer level distribution system. Most of your shopping had to be done in the same state.
I wish I had Mod Points. Stuff today is actually a lot better then it ever was. Last Decade while there wasn't too much in really cool new stuff, there was a huge increase in quality of products. Windows ME compared to Windows 7, The stability of the internet. Do you remember the hit and miss of dialup? Even the countless disconnect problems with Cable or you ISP. Things have gotten a lot better. We should look forward, to new and better things.
Yes these numbers make knowing the version you are using useless. There is one thing to get rid of minor version numbers but to skip randomly is just STUPID. Just stop giving numbers. And we just have Firefox, no numbers, if it is out of date we will never know and will be happy in our ignorance.
Do you think the main purpose of the open source community is to provide tools for megacorporations? What about Mom and Pop Shops? (1-25 employees) What about small businesses? (25-100 employees) What about medium sized businesses? (100-1000 employees) What about Large businesses? (1000-10000 employees) How about Not For Profit? How about Government? How about Military? How about Education? I could see all these groups being politically offended using such tools with names like that. The only group with a Naming Scheme like that would be the lone hacker in their parents basement.
Most use of computing (especially software development) is done by organizations often to manage For-Profit or Cost Saving activities, by people who are paid to do the work.
I can see for the story plot having the Force can make you good enough to stop a bullet or a light pulse. However If I was a general in the empire I would just use explosives, like a grenades.
