Nah this is the stuff people worry about when things are much worse too. Why do you think we let things get bad. Because of these little stupid debates to polarize people and stop them from looking at more important details.
Beside Switzerland demographics and culture is unique, and cannot always be copied to other countries, and work just as well. Just like trying to Copy the United States say 20-40 years ago to other countries, Where these other countries quickly turned to a dictator because their culture and demographics couldn't handle that particular structure.
Powerpoint did sap a lot of creativity away though. Sure they were boring meetings before, but what happened was a few people made some good Power Point presentations and people were impressed thus others started using it, although Power Point may not suit their communication style. Back when I was at school Power Point was the new toy on the block, Most Professors didn't use it. But I remember getting a few points less on an assignment where other students in the class used power point to discuss their point and I stayed with the traditional Black board (knowing that I can read the audiences Non-Verbal Queues and adjust my presentation to keep it interesting) However the students using Power Point got more points on a more professional looking presentation, although a lot of them were long and drawn out taking equal time on uninteresting/unimportant topics as it did with the more important and interesting topics. We should try to reduce power point from being required to a tool that can be handy for some cases.
Get over yourself. This is the lame excuse we have been hearing all our lives, it is neither insightful, original or useful.
1. If you produce the same goods and someone sells it for less, the one with less cost will sell better.
2. What Propaganda about "brain washed us peons into thinking that if we work hard and get educated, we too can one day join their ranks". If we Work Hard and get educated (and in the right areas where there is demand for such skills) then you can earn a decent middle class life. Colleges tend to oversell this, vs. the Super Rich Propaganda. Or are you whining because while you got your degree you are doing a job that doesn't fully use it?
3. What are you doing to try to stop the down turn. Except for complaining why aren't you looking for better work or starting your own business? Banks are starting to give out business loans again, why don't you try to start your own business?
There will always be super rich. Except for complaining how it is unfair for them to be rich, you should focus on improving your life, vs. obsessing over others who are more successful. People like you who try to discredit the rich, make them more intolerant towards helping out, as your confrontational manner will just unify them more. I know a lot of people who are poor, and I am sorry to say a lot of them are there because they didn't do anything to get out. You tell them what about doing X or Y and they will come up with Lame excuses why that won't work vs. trying to find ways to make it work. We need to become more optimistic on what we can do vs. pining over what we cannot do.
RIM has a chance to come back though... Unlike AOL who based their technology a well understood dying tech (Dial Up), even back in the early 90's most educated people knew that Dial Up networks will soon be leaving for broadband, then with the growth of the Web Browsers and normal Internet access their specialized services will become more and more useless. As well it was known for a lot of service problems. RIM is in the current field Mobile tech, It's product Quality is good, I don't hear too many people saying Black Berries Suck a lot of people actually like them a lot they just want them to do the new cool things that iPhones and Androids do, and if they can get app development and also perhaps target more to average Joe vs. Mr. Exec. they can do it.
Sure targeted advertising works, but it is not forcing people to buy the products, It is letting people who want a like product know that your product is out there.
Hey even on Slashdot I have Adds turned on. After doing some Google searches for some products I go to Slashdot I see some adds about Similar stuff I am looking at. If it wasn't for advertising a lot of products that we use today as staples wouldn't be around. Advertising isn't evil, the problem with online adds are the Criminals who use to try to scam people out of their money, vs giving them a product they were hoping to get.
Why bother spamming when the cost of advertising threw normal services have gotten so cheap. Back in the spamming hay day the cost for a banner add was thousands of dollars Now it cost as little as a few bucks. Sure we have Add block tools but most of us don't use them. So the previous spammers are going the more legit route and making their adds to look like articles on CNN.
Translation: Someone else did a bad redesign so all redesigns suck. Too bad you lack the ability to think and take some time to see if the new thing is better or not.
Being Slashdot this will mean...

They will hate it. Anything that changes they hate. If someone tries to lighten things up a bit they hate it.
They want the product to stay the same every day and never improve them, until it gets so outdated that it not used at all... Except by them.
For being tech people, I am surprised how resistant to change we are.
I too would like to know what the major innovation is? Is it just a bunch of freshman who didn't know about this before and didn't bother doing a Google search?
In Europe you are so special. We are so cool that we will forget about our nations like Greece which is crumbling into nothing because they spent more then they make.
So why would you put less trust in an new hire employee then a contractor. It isn't the contractor fault or choosing a contractor sometimes they can offer really good quality work for less cost then hiring (no matter what the Union propaganda tells you) The problem falls back into management. If you hire a contractor to do the work and especially if you have never worked with them before you really cannot fully trust his code. You will need to audit it, and check it. Just because they do it for a living it doesn't mean they are any good at it? If the company doesn't care about security neither will the contractor. If the company cares about security so will the contractor.
For a lot of these outsourced companies they are tailored towards low cost. As that is what they wanted, if they wanted higher quality then it will cost them. There is a ven diagram for this. You have Cheap, Fast, and Good you can only pick two.
For the early part of Opera's life it was free if you wanted it to display adds, or you had to pay for it. They did finally make it free, but it was too little too late. Mozilla had already gotten the Not Microsoft market. Apple with the iPod halo released Safari based from WebKit which made WebKit possible allowing Google Chrome to come in. With Apple and Googles Advertising budget they got the WebKit browsers into place, and Firefox became popular because IE started to really stink as IE 6 was becoming more and more unusable over the ages. When Opera became free as in beer without adds, there was some buzz but people already had their habits and never really advertised much about it.
Black Markets doesn't need to be a shady dealings. It is just illegal sales of products. People buy stuff black market all the time, the one of the highest Black Market product is Unpasteurized milk.
But pyramids and monuments can easily get onto earmarks. Oddly enough it is easier politically to push towards building a monument then it is to build houses.
I know you are just trying to make some point. But being able to make structures from local sources. Will save a lot of extra shipping. A good size shelter will take the place of a lot of shipments of food, water, and oxygen. And if you could make a "Glass Dome" as part of a unibody design all the better because there will be less points of failure.... Of course I would be happier if I had a Dome within a Dome. In case one or the other broke.
No the real problem is knowing when it is a major change and when it is a minor one. It is Mozilla who is wrong and the Enterprise is right.
For example Solaris, It use to have a version numbers like 2.5.1 after realizing that every time they update the tens spot customers had to do a lot of work to check for compatibility so they changed version numbers to Solaris 6,7,8,9,10... Because they need to notify their customer base if there is architectural upgrade vs. a fix or a patch.
Mozilla is not letting us know if there is an architectural upgrade (where plugins may fail, or the bit of code will no longer be supported) or just an update to prevent it from crashing or run 10% faster. Heck I also like the middle digit as it should say new features were added but these features didn't break anything old.
" I can't think of any circumstance where I would want to purchase a dog from a breeder"
Like knowing the health, living conditions, and temperament of the dogs parents? Perhaps you wish to have the dog on show or in sports such as agility? Maybe you are using the pet for farming and want to make sure it is from good stock? You want to give you kids a puppy and not have it die from an illness weeks later.
Some breeders are shady, many of them actually care for the animals they breed, and they make sure those pets don't go to anyone.

Why? Do you think all cloud services are equal? Stop think in terms of consumer products.

Puppies often like being kicked. Just be sure that when you kick them it is not in a way that hurts them.

Well that is because the users couldn't figure out how to get X working. I don't think Slashdot will work well under lynx anymore.
Maybe, I got something like that and it goes dark everytime I need to look at Perl code. So I figured they are Perl Sensitive Sunglasses.
