You analogy misses a point. By Throwing away the $50.00 notes I am not getting any goods/services from it, so there is no value in doing such an activity. Also unlike a government my money isn't directly funded by taxes so the more money moving around doesn't effect how much I personally get paid. But for the Pentagon does, So the more money moves the more they get back. Governments work more on Macro-Echonomics individuals work in Micro-echnomics.
And if you decide to send your kid to one, you get to pay for both the private school and the public school you're not using! What a deal! Especially if you can't afford to pay for two schools at once.
Oddly enough you are advocating the No Child Left Behind primary concept. If a school cannot meet the students needs then they get a voucher where their school taxes goes to paying for private school. A lot of Private schools are connected to a church in which their goal isn't to make profit, but to teach the children, so for these cases there are grants and need base pricing for people who honestly cannot afford such schooling, and the money comes from donations from other sources.
Secondly for a lot of people who say they can't afford it, It isn't that they can't afford it but they are unwilling to give up some part of their life style to pay for it. Which in itself isn't wrong, we need to make such decisions all the time. But it is important to realize before we start crying fowl for every time someone has something better then us. So a choice of moving to a smaller house/apartment vs. private school is a tough decision, however it is a possible trade off, if you think that private school will give your kids that much more of an advantage over any problems living in a smaller house (noise, cramp quarters, clutter, less room to run around and play) then you should go for it. However if you feel that private school will only give a minor improvement less then moving to a smaller home then you should keep your kids in the school.
Third there is also home schooling option. Where except for a lot of upfront cost you as a parent will need to trade it for your own time and work. Or a hybrid approach of supplementing Public school with your own teaching too, you know actually being involved in your kids education.
Money Circulates it doesn't get lost. Say you get $10.00 You save $1.00 and Spend $9.00 That guy who got that $9.00 saves $1.00 and spend $8.00 That guy who got that $8.00 saves $1.00 and spend $7.00 That guy who got that $7.00 saves $1.00 and spend $6.00 That guy who got that $6.00 saves $1.00 and spend $5.00 That guy who got that $5.00 saves $1.00 and spend $4.00 That guy who got that $4.00 saves $1.00 and spend $3.00 That guy who got that $2.00 saves $1.00 and spend $1.00 That guy who got that $2.00 saves $1.00
So overall $10.00 was saved and $45.00 worth of goods and services were paid for and at some point the money that is saved will be spent too and repeating the cycle.
Those extra pennies have probably circulated so much that they went back into taxes and funded themselves.
A teacher not happy with their school's policies, cannot go out there and start their own school with better policies. A student with a bad school cannot just pick up and leave and go to another school.
Those two lines are wrong though. You are only thinking about public schools in America there exists private schools too.
So if a teacher doesn't like their school they can work in a private one some private school don't have a Teacher Union attached to them and they get paid more (pay for performance)
Students in a bad school can leave to a Private school too.
It is probably a case they have a lot of Windows Apps that need to be ran, and it is cheaper to get Microsoft to secure windows then to report their products to an other OS (Who really isn't that much more secure anyways) try to get resources to secure the Open Source OS to an acceptable levels, (Or find out how to configure OpenBSD to do what you want) then pay to report all your apps and retest and security check them all again.
What the air force is doing is Replacing the Doors/Windows and Locks from the house. Vs. Rebuilding a new one just to get the New Doors/Windows and Locks.
What do you expect it to cover? Tracking an infectious disease actually seems like a good use of the media to me. Would you rather read about The presidents new Dog, or the fact the a lot of people doesn't like the presidents view or a lot of people who does. Do you want to fucus on everything that is wrong with the world and make you feel more depressed or all the good things so you get cavities. Do you want to read transcripts of the entire debates that goes on in the House of Representatives.
There is a lot of stuff that goes on in the world, that can be covered. And almost anything that goes on is of interest to someone. News outlets need to balance importance and popularity of such venues.
The problem I see with Google News is that it will give news that people want to see, not necessary news that will broaden their views. I want to see news that makes the Republicans look like a bunch of whinny babies when they are in the minority, however if the republicans are in charge I want the democrat minority look like brave people standing up for our rights.
The previous version work, the new version didn't. It may be a configuration issue, but Ubuntu is suppose to be easy to use so I don't feel obligated to dig around and fix it, as the other tools may conflict with it. Windows stability is just as tied to the drivers and configuration as Linux is. There are a bunch of really crappy drivers out there for windows too. If everyone used Linux as root there would be a a huge number of virus and malware for Linux, just as in Windows. If everyone ran windows as a restricted user there will be a lot less bugs and errors in Windows.
My point is that Windows isn't that much better or worse then Linux in terms of stability, bugs or security, at least in its programming. It failure was in the implemntation of all the parts.
To be honest I find more bugs and issues with Ubuntu 9.4 then I have with Vista. At least with Vista I don't get Garbage spread across my screen, if I use any 3d Exceleration.
I am not an expert on this in any way. However I would expect Adult Stem Cells from the same patient would make more compatible fixes vs. Embryonic cells from a different genetic group.
If I were to regrow a bone for my finger with Stem Cells I would expect mine to more closely match the one I loss, and would be accepted by my body better.
Unless I misread the article. It seems they found a way to make Adult Stem Cells behave like embryonic stem cells. The moral issue of Stem Cells isn't the Stem Cells but the fact that if you needed Embryonic Stem Cells you needed to Abort/Terminate/Kill/(whatever verb you think best describes the process) the fetus.
As the anti-abortion groups see abortions as killing a human life, it makes it a situation where you kill one human life to save an other or many, which is a huge ethical dilemma.
Now if you can make adult Stem Cells work like Embryonic then the issue to the ethics is reduced, taking most major religions out of the fight. Only leaving a few Right Wing Crazies who will not even try to understand the difference.
Yes it is a problem for any license. However the GPL is founded more on abstract ideals, more then most other licenses are. Most commercial licenses are founded on the principal of making money, knowing that means if there is a conflict and you still need to use it, you can communicate with the maker to get a license agreement that works for you and for them. The GPL can have the problem of having many contributors who are not bound by a company or regulations so if you were to make code non GPL you will need to get agreement from all the contributors or remove their code. Closed Source software is made by people being paid to produce code for your application which you own, as you paid them for the code to be yours.
I think more colleges as part of their Computer Science Elective they should be a class on Legacy System Maintenance. Legacy systems are not as bad as everyone makes them out to be. As well for the most part languages such as COBOL and FORTRAN are really not that hard to follow and learn. In many ways they are easier then the newer languages, as they are designed to do particular things and do them well, and not like C,C++,Java,.NET try to be the end all be all language. The old code is usually focused on the business logic while newer code seems to be working more with trying to get the formatting correct, and being well organized and modularized (which is a good thing too). But the old code you get PROCESS_CLAIM.CBL all the code that you need to process the claims are there, so when you fix the code there the problem is fixed. Having done a lot of work in FORTRAN myself I have found that there isn't that much spaghetti going on. Yes there is the GOTO statement but it is usually limited to ERROR cases where if something critical failes it GOTO ErrorNum and displays the error and quits the app.
For these legacy apps normally when something needs to be changed is because there was a change in the business process not because of a bug.
Yea thanks, not like I heard that before. It is something I always struggle with. I have 11 years of business experience I am about 80% done with my masters, part time. Writing will not come naturally to me, even if I do it all the time, which I do. I know the theory however Vowel sounds sound the same to me. Espectially when they are in multi-salable words. Because of that I tend to misspell them way off that Linux spell checker is useless an MS Office is bad at guessing.
Duel License is a lot of work. First you need to verify all people who contribute know the product will be duel licensed and all their contributions will go as such. Second you need to insure that Single Licensed GPL Code doesn't leak into the Commercial version. Third You will always need to make sure the commercial version is just as good if not better then the GPL one so if you need to replace that GPL only module it better work just as well if not better. As people are paying for the commercial version and they demand it be better then the free one. Forth you need to be extra careful for rogue code entering the commercial version from the GPL side. Granted this is rather rare for GPL coders, but you need to be extra careful because once money is traded for software then your legal libilites increase.
That is a lot of work, and giving yourself a competitive advantage usually means having something that no one else has. Going GPL really forces you to go in a service buisness vs. a Software Development business.
The 1-2 hours is because I have a difficult time writing, Vowels sound very simuler err um similar to me, making even a one page paper a hassle to write, as the spell checker will tell me the word is wrong but not give me the alternative. So I need to spend minutes hunting and and retyping (trying a bunch of Vowel combinations) just to get threw the spell checker, so with that time and effort if they are just going on content I can normally get a B out of it. But my point is it really just to kick someone out of school for plagiarizing, vs. properly deduct points for the degree of the error. I agree with not trying to plagiarize, but to kick people out of school for a forgotten paragraph, or a distraction from your work (college is full of those) had you miss a citation, seems extreme to me. Sure deduct 30% for a missed citation, or fail that paper. But to kick someone from school and mess up their future. For a mistake, especially on an undergrad paper which will never be published or seen or referenced in the future.
It isn't I forgot I was plagiarizing, it was more of an issue, I forgot to follow the technical steps for witting a paper.
Unfortunatly a lot of people don't like that idea. Not because of the science but because it puts us an other chip down. So most people are willing to accept evolution, but they take comfort their ancestors who resembled mice were in some way so much more superior then those giant monsters, and could survive a mass extinction while those huge monsters couldn't. We are just getting to the point where we can grasp that some dinosaurs evolved into birds, however we kinda are wishing they were more birdlike before the mass extinction.
The issue I have with Plagiarism. Has been the Degree of Sin it implies. Espectially with Undergrad and Grad work that isn't published. If you are found that you forgot to quote or site a quote you could get kicked out of college. If you are found with drugs or have done a violent act on campus you may loose your on campus housing. I am weak at witting myself, it takes me a long time to even write a single page paper (1 to 2 hours), so after I have wrote the paper, I need to put all my effort into making sure I am not plagiarizing any information, vs. Checking for content flow, grammar and spelling. So I may get a C on an A amount of work and learned information because of writing issues, it is better then getting kicked out of school for forgetting to site a paragraph.
A lot of these technologies are really waiting more for computing power to increase to a level where it can support it comfortable, more then new ideas on how to get it to work.
We know how to take 2 camera and generate a 3d model of what the cameras see. The problem is processing speed.
Mostly due to all the different key combination to do all sorts of moves. Which is fine for hard core gamers. But for casual gamers it is just frustrating.
A break threw technology expected to be released when such technology will be considered a small upgrade. We are always hoping for some breakthrough to go immediately to the market making everything else last year seem obsolete, but what we get is a smooth incremental upgrade that you don't really notice. And it only seems like a break threw when you look back. Such as the iPod there were other MP3 Players out there. Yea it was a small and had good storage, but those were only incremental upgrades. But when you look back 8 years you see how it changed the market.
That is the reason a lot of people go with SaaS, Because they don't own the software, and the responsibility to maintain it. I am sure some SaaS companies will be willing to Sell you the Software and some would even give it to you Open Source, where you can modify it to your whim. But the value of SaaS is the fact that you don't need to keep the code up to date or all the maintenance and backups.
SaaS is like taking the Bus,Cab, Limo vs. driving yourself. Are you giving up your freedom if you let someone else drive for you, and what is stopping you from making your own SaaS anyways, or doing all the work in house.
RMS is just trying to make himself seem relevant finding a new cause to talk about, as his old cause is getting boring to listen to.
Only for a short period of time though (4 to 5 years), then it bites them back. The Religious Mumbo-Jumbo wasn't really that big of an influence, It was mostly after the 2004 elections where the polls stated the Reason people voted for Bush was for "Moral Beliefs", which really as much Religious but fears of Gay Marriages. The only laws that focus on Religious beliefs are a couple of middle of the road Abortion Laws that get pushed up and down when ever there is a party change, which usually make their supporter go horay for their side without affecting a significant number of the population.
