The logic is often from thinking in very absolute terms, there is Right and Wrong not better and worse. Then it gets worse when the answer is complicated, and it depends. The problem isn't that people are letting the media make up their minds, their minds are already made up, they are gravitating to media that is confirming their stances.
I have found such people who follow this often have some chip on their shoulder, and are in rather powerless positions where their stances on things rarely ever have major consequences directly affecting them. So while not a political leader, my work has me making strategic decisions, sometimes they work, sometimes they fail. If they fail, I cannot blame someone else, I made a mistake, either I can learn from it or keep on making the same mistake and continue to fail. Having the power to fail, normally humbles your stance on things,
There is a lot of stupid things about MongoDB. On the top of the list is actually a lack of an Official Open Source Good quality GUI tool to manage it. Sure it sounds silly and not a big deal, as anyone who knows MognoDB can run it from the command line... However the problem is most implementations of software is not from experts of the product, but from people using it for the first time. Here is how it goes. I have a project, I gather the specs, I find that a NoSQL database engine is a good fit. Now I try to do research on a NoSQL I see that MongoDB is the popular choice, figuring if the product grows, I can then find other resources who have experience in the engine later. So then I start the project... I have no prior experience with MongoDB, Now, I am not stupid, I follow the documentation to get it going, and I get it to a point where I can attach my code to it. However I am Naive my lack of experience makes me blind on what is happening, with this new tool. There are features I don't know about, security defaults which may be different from what I am use to, so even as a in general experienced developer, I make a lot of mistakes.
Now tools like SQL Server Management Studio, pgadmin... gives me options to see what the product is doing, look at the setup and see what else I can be doing.
The problem with the anti-intellectualism, isn't that they can't read, it is more that they fail to open their minds to understand. Also to a point, usually these people who are anti-science, are not anti-science on all things. for example we have the Anti-GMO people, where there is no science showing it is harmful, there are Climate change deniers.... However they may be Pro-Vaxx or strongly believe in Evolution. Normally if someone has a view on something they don't read about something they disagree with to see if they can change their mind, they will only read material that will convince them more.
From the number above, it seems like they were 100 million new PC's sold.
I know my workplace is upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 10 soon. But for the most part Windows Sales are from it being the default OS in Most PC's which are sold. For most vendors which still offer a Windows 7 "downgrade" option. Not too many people will choose this, unless they are solid reasons to do such.
Also being that Windows 10 is now on a constant upgrade cycle, this means we are going to be stuck with Windows 10 for a while, and in general inflate Microsofts numbers.
J2EE Coding is still a popular method for a lot of development, compared to Python, it is more flexible and support Restful Services like a champ. However Java after 8 is not support in J2EE, making it annoying to pick the language for new coding.
Why do you think it is so low. All American Children have access to Public Schooling, Which covers Reading as one of it earliest skills to learn, combined with Labor Laws, that prevent taking you kid and throwing them to work in a factory instead going to school. You also have the rise of popular technologies such as social media, and texting and chatting. Where kids are actually reading and writing much more then ever before. Sure it is often stupid LOL abbreviations but that is better then before. With a generation of people with their heads down on a screen, reading text literacy is actually very high.
This is accout 74% who had read a book during the year. This isn't directly related to literacy, I myself have a problem reading in a straight line, so for me reading a book that is too long, is a stressful activity to me. It isn't that I don't know how to read. I read all the time. But I am unable to Read a book from start to finish, Unless it has good sized print and adequate spacing.
Because they can make more money without your money. The headphone jack, is a big spot of empty space, which can be used for more battery, or an extra IC or censor. Even if they readded the headphone jacks, and unlock the boot loader, would you still buy the product, or you will find some other reason to not buy it from them.
Making phones easier to hack, is great for us tech folks, but will also make phones insecure for the average Joe. So once their devices are known as insecure and prone to spyware and viruses, there goes their profit. Much more then a few happy xacks
The thing is all the technology has moved to the Cloud. Where the App provider needs to deal with improving its technology and speed. While the Cell phone needs to be just powerful enough to display the information without lag. Screen Resolution today is insane, and they run as fast as a 3 year old PC. There isn't much needed for us to Upgrade our phones for. Even the Game market has not fully used the power of the Phone, with most of the games being low quality shareware stuff we had 30 years ago.
Back in the days I had a Palm III. I also have an iPad. Both of these were the worst investment in technology I have spent. After a few hours of playing, they are mostly just left on the shelf. Because while I will carry my phone, having to carry a phone (which is now a single chip, and a wire) and a PDA. I have one thing I can use.
Coverage in my area has improved greatly in the past decade, so I am no longer needing a special phone with massive range. Going back to PDA and Cell phone doesn't seem practical.
People who are concerned about sound quality do no use mobile music players. If you want good sound quality you will need a big set of speakers (even if not played loud, the bigger speakers are able to better reproduce the sound scale), properly placed. And played with media that isn't lossy compressed.
If I am on the Go, I am listening to music while doing something else, I will not be listening to the overtones, and determining what each instrument is doing in the music, while I am driving, or doing work.
There are other ways to sort out legal component, What this does is give the Open Source community junk code, which we are not interested in, and Microsoft will go back and say, see there just isn't interest in Open Source Code. Heck they should at least wait and release a Windows 3.1 productivity pack. Calculater, Notepad, File Explorer, Clock all in one burst. Vs this one thing at a time nonsence.
Diversity is Everyone, but to be accepting of diversity also means realizing people who are not in your classification are just as human as you are, with a same sets of problems and needs that you have. But realizing that there are often old laws and cultural norms, that makes it harder for such people to function, as well as you do. In America Catholics tend to be looked down on compared to the Protestant majority, however there are so many sects of Protestantism that makes Catholics the largest single sect of Christianity. Which explains how the problem with diversity, it is normally how we classify what group we are in at the current time.
Back in elementary school we had K-4 in individual local schools, and 5-8 were in a unified (across the district schools). In K-4 there was this kid we weren't friends, (we weren't enemies either, we just didn't have any similarities) However when we moved to the fifth grade to a different school, where most of the classmates we never met before, for the first few weeks, we were friends because we were groups as the kids from that elementary school, because that was the biggest form of classification of the time. Later on other factors of our self classification kicked in and we have once again moved apart, as we were just too different.
We also see a lot of this in the military and during war. In a middle of a war you are classified as a solder for your country as is the other people you are fighting along with. The fact that the other guy may have a different race, religion, sex, political stance... then you really doesn't matter, because during this time, you need each other.
It is too bad, you see reports of inequality with different groups as an attack on the white male. There is a Them vs Us mentality that really isn't present.
The problem is there was a culture of predefined gender roles, which our current economy doesn't support, which we as a culture need to adapt to.
For some reason people find it difficult to see people who look differently them them as equals and be able to treat them as such.
The problem is everyone wants to be the problem solver and the leader. Our current media shows the super hero leader, the guy who comes up with the creative solution, and then has the power and authority to pull it off.
A good leader isn't the problem solver, there is way too much on his plate, to sit down and work out a good solution to a problem. That is why they have specialists. Their job is to sit back, and work on a solution to the problem at hand and report it back to the leader. The Leaders job is to take a look at all the solutions, try to weigh their benefits and trade offs, pick the best solution and form a team of people who are able to implement this solution.
The best leaders are rarely the smartest guys in the room, and rarely have expertise in what they are leading. The best leaders know they are not the smartest people in the room, and do not pretend that they are. However they are involved, ask questions, challenge assumptions, and put their preconceived ideas aside, to fairly judge what is best.
FOSS project or projects maintained by technologist, have trained Problem solvers and specialists trying to lead a group of diverse people and idea's. And tend to go power mad, because they have their own solution in mind, and they have the power to enforce it. Often with the problem of ignoring better ideas.
This is also a problem with elected politics, we are so polarized on issues (solutions) that we do not vote in good leaders, but people who pretend to be these super hero "Leaders" like we see on TV. And when they get into power, they are stuck to follow the party line, because they were elected to do such.
The problem is there are no longer Nerds. Back in the 1990's when Slashdot started. Computer Nerds were a thing, we were in general outcasted from society because we were doing anti-social things, like chatting with other users over computers, and not by telephone like norms. A lot of the factors that have classified us as Nerds are now normal socially acceptable activities.
People want to use tablets, however they cannot fit in your pocket. Having a folding device that will fit in your pocket then open up to be a larger tablet, is actually quite useful.
My real question is how reliable is this folding technology. My general rule of thumb is moving parts on a device is a key point of failure.
The problem is these decent products at a reasonable price, is that they do not sell, or are profitable enough for a company to continue on.
Lets face it you are going to be spending between $300-$800 for a good mid-tier (non-premium/flagship) cell phone, the sub $300 phones the companies begin to cheap out on build quality, and will not Appity-App the newest Apps so well. The over $800 Premium phones, tend to be well built, but you are paying a lot features you really will not use. For the people who are good at getting the best deal for the buck, those mid-tier phones are the best buy. That said, I am an iPhone X user, which I admit I just bought for vanity purposes (having to work with a lot of high level VP's at work, these stupid status symbols make sure they don't treat me like dirt) However getting a Premium phone, is a cheaper Status symbol then a fancy Luxary car.
I see this as a rather lame attempt to seem Open Source Friendly by Microsoft. It is like saying you are supporting the homeless in your city, but making sure the dumpster for your cafeteria is unlocked.
I think the big point that Facebook which is a popular widely used source (much like broadcast TV a generation ago) is being used to tout misinformation, which people who have such views, can more widely get a hold of and strengthen their resolve, even if they are fully in the wrong.
The problem is that too many people are getting news from Facebook, and a lot of it very fake and dangerous. (Like, yelling fire in an auditorium type of dangerous which could be outside of First Amendment Speech ) And Facebook still hasn't done much to fix this.
One of the biggest learning experience from Sim City is the idea of balance, and consequences. This is a lesson that a lot of people really don't get anymore, they are so stuck on a theory that they want to Min/Max their lives to fit their social/political ideas. Sim City really prevented the ability to Min/Max game play and forced a balanced approach. Those Industrial zone which pollute and lower the nearby Residential value, however they are needed to support the Commercial districts, and if they are too far away from the Residential areas, then they will not be utilized thus lowering commercial value. Your choices have a trade off, but not making a choice is often worse, then when you have your consequence in action, you will need to then see if there is a way to mediate it, and then have its own sets of trade offs.
Yahoo categorization method was a good fit for the time. Altavita sucked, because we couldn't find what we were looking for. Google Applied better technology and helping categorize information better.
The problem is a lot of people are looking for 100% safe. Nothing is 100% safe, it never will be.
The direction towards progress is choosing the options that are safer then the options. So the problems you get with a Vaccine is in general much less then the problems you have without it. Sometime when I get my Work Mandated Flu shot, I feel a little ill for a week. But that is still better then actually getting the Flu, and spreading it to people who may not be able to get the Flu shot (Immune system problems).
Vaccines work by telling your body there is a dangerous infection in your body. So your body creates Antibodies to fight it. This puts extra stress on your body, but if you are of relatively good health you can deal with it. And that stress will do less harm then the stress of an actual infection.
I can overgeneralize too. This is unlike the idiots and politicians that claim, that Climate Change is a Hoax, that the Earth is actually flat, and evolution is the work of the Devil. Oh, and unrestricted capitalism to an already corrupt corporate environment is a "good thing" to the nation.
I think you are missing point. Physical media in practical terms, isn't any better then digital media in terms of long term storage. There is a theoretical advantage, but practical there isn't.
The reason why Stupidity and Ignorance have stood the test of time, because we as humans are still animals, with primitive and instinctive actions, which have came from hundreds of millions of years of evolution. The urge to destroy a threat is in us all, as it is a good way to normally insure your survival. Now the problem with idea's is that they can be just as damaging, so our lizard brain kicks in, and we want to destroy it. It takes an intelligent person to fight the instinct and say it needs to be preserved over the threat it causes me. But I always remember what my Stat Teacher told me, about 1/2 of the population has below average intelligence.
The logic is often from thinking in very absolute terms, there is Right and Wrong not better and worse. Then it gets worse when the answer is complicated, and it depends.
