A 60 Minutes Story on Gender Equality Accidentally Proved the Persistence of Patriarchy (qz.com)
Over at Quartz, Ephrat Livni reports that a 60 Minutes story about gender equality accidentally proved the persistence of patriarchy. Reader theodp shares the report: Good intentions are nice, but they aren't enough, the TV news show 60 Minutes recently proved. The show's producers apparently meant well when they decided to do a segment on women in technology and the gender gap, which aired on March 4. But they ended up punching women in the gut, as the founder and CEO of Girls Who Code, Reshma Saujani, puts it in her response to the segment. Ultimately, 60 Minutes featured a man, Code.org CEO Hadi Partovi. His [tech-backed] organization's mission is to expand access to computer science education in schools.
Women technologists like Saujani who were tapped to appear on the show about a year ago and worked with producers to provide research and interviews, ended up on the cutting room floor while Partovi spoke on their behalf. Here is the cruel irony: As a result, 60 Minutes' segment was accidentally exceptionally effective-it proved that women in tech really can't catch a break. [...] Ayah Bdeir, the founder of STEM learning toy company littleBits, also responded to the episode in a Medium post. She noted that she worked with 60 Minutes for a year, planning interviews, providing research, talking to the producers and reporters, telling her story and that of her organization, which is focused on closing the gender gap in technology. Yet producers wrote to her last August to say that the focus of the segment had shifted and that littleBits would no longer be central in the story. In an email, a producer explained to her, 'It's not that the important points you made in your interview are ignored in the story, or that you didn't make them very effectively, they're just made by others'.

Orange man bad?
This male dominated industry never ceases to amaze me with their constant "pull requests".
I'll see your senator, and I'll raise you two judges.
No, it doesn't prove anything, it just highlights the hypocrisy of the liberal media.
They didn't prove anything. Since the facts of the story weren't showing what they wanted the story was edited and fixed with a narrative that better fit the political agenda they wanted to push.
Just wondering, wouldn't closing the gender gap on trashmen be as valuable? Or teachers, which at least on my country are almost all women (and reasonably well paid). Oh, is that just chauvinism?
Let's be honest, this is about marketing. The interviewed people get named with their companies and their products, correct? How much do you want to bet someone just wanted to have their name front and center and paid a pretty penny for it?
How does this prove "the patriarchy"? Doesn't it really prove that media organizations don't practice what they preach?
It is so useful to have some made up fluid abstract concept that can be used as a scapegoat for all your ills: "God/Satan", "Patriarchy", "Toxins", etc.
In an email, a producer explained to her, 'It's not that the important points you made in your interview are ignored in the story, or that you didn't make them very effectively, they're just made by others'.
I'm not normally an activist type when it comes to women's rights, but that was pretty damn harsh.
You know, speaking of 60 Minutes, someone should contact them about a good story they should investigate. It has to do with a periodical news show that tried to do a segment about gender equality but ended up offending women everywhere. Does anyone know a good producer over there that can explain the whole process to the women so it can get done right?
What is this doing on Slashdot? Is it literally because "Women technologists like Saujani who were tapped to appear on the show-"? I don't not care about issues like this.... It's just stupid that it's on "News for Nerds that Matters." (yes I'm aware more and more often we're getting stuff that doesn't really relate to that.... but FFS) How many people on Slashdot even watch 60 Minutes?
Stop giving these twisted claims credence; give them what they deserve: Laughter.
The West is falling into decadence, because the people of the West have forgotten how to laugh at nonsensical ideas.
Start telling people "No. You're wrong; put your own money where your mouth is, and leave me alone."
Yes, Orange Man Bad.
So, what was really proved is women in tech are uninteresting and unworthy of air time and meritocracy works.
If the producers followed standard leftist diversity bullshit rules they would have done the segment with all these tedious, boring women and no one would have watched.
The moral of the story, my idiot sheep Marxist weak ass troll, is: be interesting if you want precious air time. Boring, faux diversity has no value.
That is what 60 Minutes tells us.
this doesn't prove anything. Trash article and trash conclusion.
When the hell are we going to stop trying to push this garbage? There's not a lot of women in tech because they don't give a f**k about it. Most women I know want to use it, not build it. No one complains about chicks who did tech and want to be a part of it. The only requirement is to actually have a little skill and understand stuff is not getting handed to you because you're a woman. It doesn't get handed to men either.
What this means is that whoever makes 60 minutes thought that a report about men in the business sells better than one about women in the business. Or rather that we get a LOT more air time and buzz around a story that is allegedly about women only to be totally about men...
We used to have a Bill of Rights. Now, with the rights gone, all we have left is the bill.

You really shouldn't refer to women as ugly and repulsive, that's sexist.
Laws are rules for the court, but merely a bottom bar to hit for life. Think beyond laws in your actions always.
60 Minutes is known for writing the story first, then going out and shooting some video to fill it out; they've been doing it that way for decades.
It's pretty clear here that the women who were interviewed didn't provide the required sound bites - they probably complained about ongoing discrimination instead of happy talk about all the wonderful opportunities girls have today. 60 Minutes has always pushed their political agenda; it's pretty clear that they didn't want to admit that initiatives which were started over two years ago aren't working...
Men's brains are totally wired different for women. Men love science. The majority of women don't. Women make better nurses. Women make better homemakers etc..Women make better caregivers. Women make better sandwiches..
Normally I'm all about the big bad corporation but quite frankly, it's possible that the material from the women just wasn't all that compelling or revolutionary enough to be in an hour long news show.
Laws are rules for the court, but merely a bottom bar to hit for life. Think beyond laws in your actions always.
MAKE IT STOP
Slashdot reads like a left-wing propaganda site these days.
Today's stories include "How you're stupid if you question any vaccine on any level, how using the scientific method to question any aspect of climate change makes you unscientific, ten reasons why you should kneel before Apple and Tim Cook, and the patriarchy - how it's still real, and despite proof that the legal system and the culture in general favor women you need to accept it's because you're the patriarchy, you're evil, and it's your fault for possessing a penis!"
The preceding post was not a Slashvertisement.
Are you looking at equality of opportunity or equality of outcome? If it is the former, then focussing on your favorite gender, ethnicity or condition is counterproductive. It creates resentment and will achieve the opposite result.

I love all the women.

Granting that these editing decisions were made on sexist / patriarchal grounds, wouldn't that say a lot more about 60 Minutes than it does about the tech industry?
Nobody cares.
The smartest women go into medicine. Most of these women could go into tech but prefer this field instead. There is a natural draw to this field for women and frankly it is more rewarding for someone that enjoys human interactions. The trend will likely continue until women utterly dominate medicine. https://news.aamc.org/press-releases/article/applicant-enrollment-2017/ Some fields will be dominated by men and others by women thanks to freedom of choice. Women now make up the majority of medical and law school students. Women as a whole don't want to go into tech in the numbers that men want to and its reflection of personal choice more than patriarchy.
After 100,000 years of keeping all the evidence secret, ya finally uncovered the ultimate proof of the male conspiracy over women. Good work! It's true, the patriarchy is real. We all meet in secret and plot against yall. Congratulations for finally finding the proof. That next patriarchy meeting is sure to be a doozy! We'll all be blaming those incompetent boobs over at 60 minutes for spilling the beans!
Seriously though, is this weird conspiracy theory of "the patriarchy" really the only explanation here? Not say, 60 minutes is selling eyeballs to advertisers, and will cut the segment to draw as many eyeballs as possible? Oh no... it couldn't be old fashioned money... it just has to be a shadowy conspiracy to disempower women known as "the patriarchy".
“At Girls Who Code, I wanted to do something that would focus on the hyper-sexualization of women in video games. I proposed my idea to Sophie Hauser and she wanted to do something with me to address social justice. She made a joke saying, ‘Why not have a game where you throw tampons at people?’ At first, we laughed, but after talking about menstruation and how embarrassed we were about it, we realized that it could be worth exploring. In video games, we see blood all the time, but menstrual blood is stigmatized.” ~Andrea Gonzales
Problems with gender equality? You mean like how Google found it was underpaying men? Seems these days that the media is purposefully gas lighting us...
Weak men will slowly cause most reasonable, working things to fail. This is why women hate them and use them as tools. The rest of us will do what we can to survive the upcoming breakdown.
Keep tipping that fedora eventually you'll find one that will sleep with you.
If the "patriarchy" continues, why the hell are almost 2/3 of all college students in the US female?
Yeah, TFS is just pushing the "victim" culture.
because they shift all their shows based on some sporting event that I certain don't give a crap about. The DVR never gets the shows I want, so I gave up trying.
Plus, CBS streaming is behind a paywall, so why bother at all.
It is just easier to ignore CBS, just like I ignore CNN, Fox News, SyFy, and all the other non-broadcast networks. After 1 week, you don't miss it anymore. Trust me. Out of sight, out of mind really does work.
Oddly, the CW network does everything right. No sports, no shifting shows, easy to catch up if I miss a recording the next day. Perfect. Need me some "Arrow" and iZombie.
I've been treated like shit my whole life... Every time I hear this Jewish bullshit propaganda, designed to make males and females hate each other to further the Jews' plans to exterminate all races except Jews...
Maybe you're being treated like shit for being an resentful, antisemitic person? It's pretty damn hard to like someone like you who hates another simply for the circumstances of his/her birth.

The phrase "mansplaining" is sexist. Have you ever heard anyone say "Womansplaining"? No? Yet it occurs obviously. The fact is, some people are better at communication than others. To say people are listened to because of their sex and not their communication skills is just downright silly without some empirical evidence.

It's ironic but not "proof of" patriarchy. Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar, and sometimes a redundant interview in a documentary piece is just a redundant interview. If there were five women and five men interviewed, and their inclusion were chosen by coin toss, with a man-heavy lopsided result, would that "prove" the patriarchy of coins? Of statistics?
This is not by any stretch of the imagination an article about tech. Please keep Slashdot on-topic.
Females are treated a billion times better than males.
I've been treated like shit my whole life, because I'm an unattractive white male; the lowest form of life after WW2. Every time I hear this Jewish bullshit propaganda, designed to make males and females hate each other to further the Jews' plans to exterminate all races except Jews, turning them into helpless slaves (which has already been effectively achieved), it really makes my blood boil.
The utter absurdity of the idea that females are somehow "oppressed" in this world where they get anything they point at, hailed as goddesses no matter how ugly and repulsive they are, ought to make any thinking entity strongly question whether reading so-called "news" at all is meaningful at this point.
Dude. You need to get up on your own shit, rather than being so concerned with what other people are doing an experiencing. The treatment that pretty girls get does not affect you unless you choose for it to. Live your life, pursue your dreams and goals. You have that power; no one can prevent you. Take conscious control of your thoughts and attention and direct them to things that please you. Ignore everything else that you are powerless to change.
"But ultimately Bdeir felt that she could not explain away the showâ(TM)s mistake, or blame herself, or her organizationâ(TM)s size, or the fact that English isnâ(TM)t her first language." She could not ... wait, what?
Wrapping each noun phrase in a variable:
"she could not explain away A, or blame B, C, or D"
Distributive law:
"she could not explain away A, or blame B, or blame C, or blame D"
Thus I parse it as Bdeir having felt that she could not do any of these:
- explain away the show's mistake
- blame herself
- blame her organization's size
- blame the fact that English isn't her first language
We do not live in a patriarchy. The US never has been one. The redefining of patriarchy is as bullshit and false as regressives redefining sexism and racism to include power. Look at the gender equality paradox. When countries rated as having the highest gender equality end up showing men and women tend to gravitate towards jobs most typically associated with their gender at a greater rate than more controlling countries, it should be a sign that men and women really truly just do not want to do the same things.
When people say "The Patriarchy" I think of it as "The Illuminati" or "the Jews" or "The White Man" or even just "The Man".
It means exactly the same thing.
It's about people blaming their own problems on something that they think is keeping them down. It's a convenient excuse for our own perceived (or actual) failures.
The thing is though, that life itself is a difficult, and it's difficult for almost everyone.
When you start blaming someone else for why things didn't turn out like you wanted, especially an imaginary someone else... Well, that's when you've truly lost.
If you can't admit your own failures, you may as well be just burning someone in effigy.
I was a software engineer back in the early 70s for 8 years. We had several women in the programming department. There was no problem with them or bias toward them. There is a never ending fight about race and gender among socialist today. I for one will not hire blacks or women because of these constant contentions. I wish to avoid the law suits that can come about in hiring such. Blacks and women today have been indoctrinated with socialist ideas throughout their liberal schooling and are prone to making trouble. I don't need it and they are not going to get into a position to cause it. Go ahead and object. I couldn't care less and will not be moved by your objections.
Quick, name *any* WNBA star?....yup...thought so.
There are things men do better. It's just a fact. There are things women do better. Also, just a fact. Why can't we just do what we're good at instead of getting all wrapped up in envy about what someone else has or does? Hello Satan! Back in the garden I see.
Does this mean my "white privilege checks" that I get each month are going to stop coming?
Will I have to actually go out and get a job like those "other" people now?

Why do cucks keep posting SJW lies and propaganda on this website? So annoying.
I am not concerned about the impotent whining of the privileged, so I don't care about their "resentment", it's all irrational anyway and it will die of old age along with the right-wing pissants themselves. There is no point in trying to convince right-wing zealots, their position is purely dogmatic, the best approach is to laugh at them as they get dragged kicking and screaming into a progressive society.
Google Finds It’s Underpaying Many Men as It Addresses Wage Equity https://www.nytimes.com/2019/0...
For a profession that has single digit female representation.
Oh come the ever loving fuck on. You know damned well he'll just end up in the bathroom, his genitals covered in peanut butter, getting head from his dog while his wife pounds on the door.
We passed equality of opportunity a very long time ago, it didn't get every high paying job to be greater than 50% female dominated (we ignore the high paying careers that are female dominated, and only focus on the ones that are male dominated), so it wasn't enough. Now we have to focus on "equality of outcome" which translates to active discrimination against white males.
Discrimination is discrimination. Just because it's against a group that used to be "in power" doesn't make it any less discriminatory.
The only way past this is to stop telling organizations what gender or ethnicity they must hire, stop asking everyone what their gender and ethnicity is (the only reason to ever do so is to discriminate) and let organizations do what they do best: Hire the person who is best suited to do the job. Businesses don't want to hire a lesser person just because of skin colour or genitals. Businesses are in it for the money, they don't care about gender or ethnicity unless forced to.
... or to believe men who have been victims of domestic violence or sexual assault.
Actually, I've seen a number of people push to emphasize that men are victims of domestic violence and sexual assault too and that they have a more difficult time reporting, for example. There hasn't been a #metoo movement for men in part because it's even more culturally taboo for men to be a victim, and I believe there is a real shortage of DV shelters that take men, but anyone who looks at domestic violence in a more than cursory way knows it's a problem.
Life's not fair. You can choose to elevate the people around you, or not. If you don't, don't be surprised if people don't want you around. There are other ways to be desirable, but if they aren't available to you, guess what: an antisocial attitude doesn't change that. Probably feels great, though. You sound very happy.
You've misdiagnosed, and in an actually funny and ironic way. The reason people happen to treat you like shit, turns out to have nothing to do with you being a man. I'm a man, and wish I knew you, so that I could treat you like shit too.
the benefits of your gender studies include inventing and learning new ways to insult people (how to be a professional asshole) and you left an open seat in the computer science class for someone smarter than you
I'm part of an ethnic minority and I work in an industry that's traditionally dominated by a majority ethnicity. Were I to be interviewed for a segment on "ethnic minorities in this industry", but for that interview to be cut, I would still judge the entire segment within the context of its goals.
I would like to watch this 60-minutes segment and see if the goals of the segment (presumably to increase the acceptance of women in tech and to improve their treatment within the industry) would benefit or be hindered by Saujani's interview. If Saujani comes off as a firebrand and not a uniter, I wouldn't hold it against 60 minutes to omit her interview.
That is, of course, pure conjecture and that's all we have until we see everything.
You and I can have exactly the same goals of reducing racism in areas of high persistence of racism, but I guarantee my method of inclusion and sharing will consistently do more for our goals than would screaming at people and calling them racists. If you're genuinely goal oriented, choose the method that will most likely result in the achieving of those goals-- even if success isn't seen in your life time.
White people don't generally sign up for them. They're called welfare checks.
BZZZT: wrong.
Useful fact: the majority of welfare recipients are, in fact, white.
Inconvenient truth: the only racial group that is over-represented on welfare is....
maybe, but "underrepresented" does not mean "whites don't get welfare." Learn how to use statistics.
Since whites are by far the largest group, they can be "underrepresented" and still be a majority.
"Gender equality" should be something encouraged by ensuring both genders have the same OPPORTUNITIES to better themselves. If you're trying to give one gender additional opportunities not given to the other one? That's about artificial (and discriminatory) manipulation of the outcome.
No different, really, than situations like McDonalds recently announcing they're donating a large sum of money to help give black kids scholarships to colleges and universities. As a private business, McD can spend its money any way it wishes. But let's call it what it really is; discriminatory favoritism purposely given to a group that's perceived as needing more financial help to pay for higher education. If this was REALLY about promoting equality, the scholarships they fund wouldn't have one's skin color as a prerequisite. What about the poor white kid who lives in an inner city, who could excel in college if he/she was only given the opportunity? Clearly, McDonalds thinks it's more beneficial to ignore that kid because he/she is "too white" to make them look good.
Have you ever heard anyone say "Womansplaining"?
No, but that's because we tuned out women as nothing but shrill carping harpies decades ago.
There's a massive SJW backlash on the Internet right now. It's generating a ton of advert revenue. This is just more false controversy drummed up for clicks. Like the Captain Marvel/Rotten Tomatoes story. They're winding us up and sending us off to make money off our eyeballs.
The same thing's been going on with the YouTube skeptic community. A bunch of skeptic channels I rather liked became 24/7 rants about SJWs and feminism because the anti-Homeopath and pro-vaccine stuff they were running wasn't paying the bills...

The best way to be more inclusive is to exclude white male hetrosexual Christians.
In this case, they did the exact opposite. In a program about inclusivity, they decided that "the best way to be more inclusive" was to show only white heterosexual males.
Their program about women left all the interviews of women on the cutting room floor, and showed zero women. You really think that's what is meant by "inclusive"?
and you fell for it by clicking. The reason you're seeing so much SJW crap is that it gets clicks and comments. You got a +5, meaning at least 3 other folks looked at your comment and moderated it, meaning community engagement which in turn means more content generation for /. (which is the point of /.).

If you want to make this stop start ignoring it. SJWs aren't like the White Supremacists. They're poorly organized and fight among themselves. They're mostly a few angry college chicks who grow out of it after graduation.
Left alone the SJW crowd is mostly harmless. Yes, there are exceptions, there are exceptions to everything in this wide world, but the harm from obsessing over them is far, far greater. While you're focusing on this the wealthy are packing the courts with pro-corporate judges and doing things like forced arbitration, letting companies get away with putting lead in your air and water and stripping you of access to education and healthcare.

This Slashdot comment section is even better proof of the patriarchy's persistence. I've never seen so many people in one comment section doing their best to deflect away from the notion, in fact. Not even on the 'chans.
"Blame it on GitHub!"
That joke is in the direction of indicating the true underlying craziness of the topic.
More than 30 years ago, while backpack traveling outside the U.S., I became friends with a medical doctor. She gave me a book to read that said, "In Italy, feminism is pro-woman. In the U.S., feminism is anti-male."
That seems correct to me. To me, women in the U.S. seem to make themselves unhappy. It amazes me that women in the U.S. don't realize that being anti-male will make themselves unhappy.
Yesterday, I had a first conversation, by telephone, with a Brazilian woman who is in Brazil. She was very happy.
I'd love to see a segment about the gender gap in more blue-collar fields. Fields like sanitation workers, plumbers, electricians and construction workers. These are all jobs which can provide a livable wage and comfortable life, but I don't ever hear about anyone screaming because they are male dominated.
Bring me a sandwich, bitch.
Now excuse me while I sign up for selective service and have to gain employment on my own merit.
60 minutes is one of my favorite news shows. Sure they are a bunch of fuckups yet their reporting over the years has had quite a lot of impact in terms of change and accountability.
That said pressed the stop button before this segment started. It's impossible to appease the perpetually insulted SJWs crowd. They will come back barking no matter what you do.
The reality is chicks DON'T WANT to be programmers or IT goons. It isn't something they give a fuck about in the first place. Trying to twist their arms and brainwash them into thinking it's something they want isn't good for anyone. STEM is way more than just computer shit and women are dominating in other areas they are predisposed to give a fuck about.
We don't have persistent public shaming campaigns against women dominated fields and how unfair that is for men. Women have nothing to bitch about given hiring data shows they are MORE likely to be hired than a MAN for the same position.

You know some of these ignorant kids think the USA was and is a patriarchy?
So silly.
Also this article is for retards.
"The patriarchy" as feminists mean it is trivial to prove or disprove. Just do the following: Perform a randomized cross-society poll. Ask these questions:in a random order: Is it ever acceptable for a man to hit a woman?
Is it ever acceptable for a man to hit a woman?
Would you like to contribute to the Women's March?
Would you like to contribute to the Men's March?
How do you feel about the recent murder of 500 girls in Afghanistan? Is that something Congress should act on immediately?
How do you feel about the recent murder of 500 boys in Afghanistan? Is that something Congress should act on immediately?
If The Patriarchy is real obviously people will choose to help and protect men at the expense of women. Tell the above to a feminist and she'll start talking about systems of power and oppression, but it's just more bullshit. Pin them down on one definition and the definition will change. Feminism is female supremacy and it needs to die.
If video games influenced behavior the Pac Man generation would be eating pills and running away from their problems.
This is pretty amazing that one accidentally proved something that is fictitious.
There is no such thing as patriarchy.
See Christina Hoff Sommers debunk all the nonsense of gender studies in the classroom.
This is also, by the way, the reasons many universities have made it against the rules or illegal to record their classes even for reference purposes the way you used to be able to.
Because they don't want it getting out what they are teaching to the students in various liberal arts classes.
We need to get liberalism out of colleges and put back rightful education. Stop turning our kids into liberal propaganda mouthpieces.

Spot on...
And attractive females should be treated better - word. Also, there's a reason for things being the way they are.
It's called e-v-o-l-u-t-i-o-n. We didn't just evolve physically as a species, we evolved sociologically as well.
We may not understand all of the nuances that are there (hell, we're just scratching the surface of understanding
the physical ones), but it's silly to think our society is 100% invented by the laws that are made in that society.
Now I disagree in that some parts of the world, women are treated badly. This is a direct cause of the religious
practices in said society (yes, even Christianity too). If we Lennon-ize those places, their treatment will be better
because that's the natural evolutionary order of things.

I couldn't wait to find out which statistic or data '60 Minutes' had accidentally revealed. After all, 'proof' should at the very least start with a statistically significant data set. Instead, we get a puff piece that so badly massacres the language of the scientific process that it's an insult to every reader here.
If you think there's a patriarchy, fine. Don't go throwing around words like 'proof' just because of a single anecdote in your life. Maybe 'irony' would have been a better concept to apply to this article.
As a white male, it can sometimes be hard getting a job in tech. It seems like if I were female or a minority with the same skills, I would be getting offers right and left from companies trying to boost their 'diversity numbers'. Instead, I have to compete with everybody else like me. Since it is fashionable these days to 'self identify' as whatever gender, race, or ethnicity you like; should I try that? I am not going into politics, so there might not be a downside to checking the 'Native American' box on the application even if I only suspect that one of my great-great-great-grandmothers might have been Cherokee.

From working in tech to having a young tech woman as a roommate trying to get in the field, I've seen this happen time and time again.
One of the things I like about the setup here is that there is a critical mass of women in STEM fields, so you don't get the lone woman in a committee or a project, but it's a larger number.
However, women need to continually reinforce credit for other women when they speak up. Even unconsciously, men tend to not hear them when they contribute, and incorrectly assign credit to other men in the group, and talk over them as well.

It’s probably down to the merits of the various interviewees in terms of presentation, facts, ideas, and coherency. Oh, and dicks. Everyone knows havin a dick makes you good at everything.
I have been at this for over 20 years. Women in tech have it easier. I have had the chance to observe all women classes and all men classes when training in say linux. Men in class were focused, didn't talk, studied the whole time and tapped the teacher only when they were stumped. In the all women class, it was hard to keep them focused. They requested lots of breaks and what little time spend on exercises, they would ask questions at every step of the way before trying it themselves. It was very difficult to stay on subject and get through a section.
These same groups once moving from a company sponsored class, were interviewed. The guys were able to obtain more and out perform most of the women. Many of the women would buckle under the pressure of being questioned, have anxiety attacks or just break down crying. The company wanted to have a larger women base as a selling point, so most of them got hired on anyways.
On the transition to the job, the guys were heads down, learned the systems and started working through tickets right away. The women were less confident and focused. It would take much longer before they felt comfortable with tickets. Out of a class of 40 women or so, 3 were remaining after a couple of months. Almost all of the guys in the class of the same time frame are still working there after a few years in various positions. The women got better treatment and were expected to do less. Also the managers were scared to step on an emotional landmine or get accused of some sort of oppression. The guys were held to a higher standard as they didn't buckle under the pressure.
I'm not saying all guys are better at tech than women. The women that stayed are better than most of the guys from the other class. Could it be that women are being sold on tech, and once they get in its just not for the majority of them?
Most of the 60minutes producers are women... and when was the last time 60minutes "proved" anything, intentionally or otherwise? Folks, The Patriarchy is just a bedtime story coeds at Oberlin tell each other so they can feel better about themselves and their lack of sexual partners
Really slashdot? We're posting feminist nonsense as news that matters to nerds? Go #@$^% your self. ;)
Trilby, dammit. Those are not fedoras.
I worked for a company back in the early 90s. Most of my fellow programmers were male, but a few of them were female. One of the ladies on my team decided that she wanted to get laid off for a severance check since she didn't really want to work anymore. She tried everything to be a part of the next round of 'reduction in force'. She came in late every day and went home early. She played games on her computer. She was behind on nearly all of her tasks. At the next 2 layoffs she was not among those picked to leave. Finally, she just quit without any severance because all her attempts failed. If I had tried even a tenth of the stunts she pulled, I would have been out on the street in a New York Minute.
...that's how much time a dedicate male tech student will spend in front of his computer. What these advocates don't understand is that they are recommending women/girls compete against enthusiasts/fanatics who spend almost all available time living and breathing tech.
And they wonder why their plans aren't working out?
The point of this is to drive more workers into the industry so the last few making good money get their wages dropped down.
In any case the Gender pay gap will take care of itself as more women graduate college than men. At this point it's just a distraction by the right wing on both sides (right win Dems like to use it to avoid talking about real solutions to working class problems and the GOP likes to use it to rile up their base).

"How you're stupid if you question any vaccine on any level" that is not left wing , there are people on either side of the political spectrum which don't vaccinate their kids for variety of stupid idiotic imbecilic reason and many of them left wing - "you should vaccinate your kid" is enither left nor right wing, it is "it is science dumb fuck learn from history on people dying from it dumb fuck" wing. And that was your first one, the one which should be the strongest in an enumeration... There is no need to continue reading.

I became friends with a medical doctor. She gave me a book to read that said, "In Italy, feminism is pro-woman. In the U.S., feminism is anti-male."
There was a recent (US-based) conference, Women and Psychedelics Forum, from which I recently read report of. I found the agenda interesting. First topic of discussion: toxic masculinity.
So I'm thinking: Geeze ladies. That's how you want to spend your time in a conference that's focused on women? Talking about men?
So, it's not only 60 Minutes that does this kind of things. Women do it to.
My family's full of them, and they all have to do heavy lifting for the first 5 years. After they put in their dues most move up to desk jobs handing out pills or backing up doctors.

Trying to get away with calling women "cunts" by calling men "cunts" too. I'm reminded of the phrase "Anyone can be a n***ger". Not saying your racists or sexist, just that your choice of rhetorical devices is questionable and you might not be aware just how questionable.
Anyway, here's an intelligent rebuttal to Alessandro Strumia's presentation. It's way better than anything I can come up with here, and it's worth a read for anyone who wants to have an honest discussion about gender in science.
And there I go using a questionable rhetorical device (implying you're not wholly honest). It's surprisingly tough not to do that. Almost like words have unintended consequences in nuanced discussions...

Male nurses are highly sought after.
Having spent more time than most in hospitals (thank you stage iv cancer), I can tell you that, with one glaring exception in the ER, the worst nurses I've had were all male, and the best all female.
While one person cannot represent a statistical universe, I'd estimate I've interacted with at least 200 nurses over the past few years, maybe more. At the risk of being accused of sexism (or whatever) I'll post my hypothesis, based on observation but by no means proven:
1) women seem to pay more attention to detail. This is not universal, but certainly appears to be the case more often that not, with very few exceptions that I've observed
2) men seem distracted. This is a corollary to #1: most of the women I've interacted with (with the aforementioned exception) have been highly observant and engaged in the moment, whereas most of the male nurses I've dealt with have been fairly disengaged and non-proactive.
3) The dudes who took care of me couldn't seem to care much, most of the women on the other hand were highly caring and conscientious. This matters when you're life hangs in the balance.
I have had the engagement of female nurses save my life on several occasions, including once when chemo sent me into anaphylactic shock that required a very rapid response to avoid death, whereas I've had the disengagement of male nurses put me in life-threatening situations (that other, mostly female, nurses had to then mitigate).
There may also be an empathy/nurturing component to this, but that's a little more fuzzy, so I'd stick to measurable metrics like engagement and patient results. It would be nice to see a widespread study or meta-study on this, but I suspect we as a society don't want to know the answers it could well bring.
bad bad bad producer did not select me me me me! Snowflake tears
the pro-corporate right wing is. Specifically to distract you from economic issues with social issues.
The right wing Dems use SJWs to distract their base from things like Medicare for All, Jobs programs, tuition free college and other programs they and their wealthy donors don't want to be taxed to pay for. Right wing Dems abandoned the working class during Bill Clinton's presidency so they need something to distract from that.
As for the GOP (which is all right wing) they use it to rile up their base with a new enemy. Racism is pretty much going away and the Southern Strategy (google the phrase if you don't know it) is petering out. SJWs are the new boogie man to be scared of.
There's nothing there. SJWs have no real power except as boogiemen to distract from the same 'old crappy policies that screw the working class stiffs like you and me. Ignore them. Vote Bernie Sanders. He's the only politician I know who consistently brings the working class together around real issues.

they're bought off by corporate interests. Go look up Secular Talk and the Young Turks on YouTube.
MSM is doing the same thing that the right wing "Clintonian" Democrats & the GOP are doing: Using SJWism to distract you from the horrible things they're doing to you economically. Don't fall for it. It's a trap.

"It's not that the important points you made in your interview are ignored in the story, or that you didn't make them very effectively, *they're just made by others*".
Ha, looks like sexism right there! It's very easy to figure out what he ment by "others".
A very poor attempt to slip sexism under the radar indeed.
"Lennon-ize"
So they will be under the Beatles party? Never heard of that one!
You ment "Lenin", right?
Look,
men have always considered women important enough to work to improve their situation,
and most women now are twisted into vicious #ManHating putrid slime, who 'get-off' on kicking men in the balls, trying to destroy men's lives
(please excuse me as I work in a University setting for years surrounded by lying vicious evil #ManHating cnts.)
Perhaps the women rambled on about "ma-vag" & the man just answered the questions well for all.

A woman gives an interview and a producer decides not to include it. She blames patriarchy. Does she blame patriarchy when her toast lands jam side down on the floor as well? Come on - people need to stop applying gender to everything like its the end of the world, and they need to stop blaming other genders for their short comings. Equal opportunity is all that's needed, and if ANY gender wants to prove themselves they can do so if they truly desire it. This idea that people ignore women because of their gender is old, untrue and a relic of the past. The sooner journalists, female leaders and politicians realise this the better off we will all be - without this divisive nonsense that enflames women's frustrations and gives them the wrong person to blame for it.
Wow!
Quote: "Key topics that were discussed included: toxic masculinity..."
To me, that indicates a shocking lack of social ability.
Which ones? Name names. I don't know of a single one. Hell nuns don't even get to run their own shit. I don't want to argue against you, I want to avoid these places like the plague.

You meant "meant", right?
P.S. when life hands you Lenins...
You can't even get your hate right. Women have always been on the highest value coins. Lady Liberty, Morgan, Susan B, Sackajawea, etc. Those are not "special" pity coins. They are the highest denominations and physically largest coins made. The very highest coins we had were adorned with eagles. They could have been lady eagles. You don't know. It's not the coins' fault that people were too damned lazy to carry around 2 pounds of REAL gold coins.
He could be, but then how do you account for the jew-hating, ugly-ass, redneck women that I know with certainty live here in Tennessee? Something else is the issue.
He would say that since he's a known racist and mysoginist. There's two different tones that statement can be read in. He's bragging that he's won the situation.
I'll be marching in the streets for more women brick layers. There needs to be more women working on the oil rigs in northern Alberta!
Here's an easy way to sue tech companies for millions if not billions. Easy money in the bag!
The company I work at is close to 50% women , 50% men.
On the surface, this sounds ideal, right?
So what's the problem?
Look at a typical computer science course.
95% men, 5% women.
It is against the law in the US to hire or exclude a person based on their gender.
Hook, line, and sinker!
The reporter at 60 Minutes deliberately aggregates the statistics for all ethnic and racial groups and then alleges that cultural or other barriers prevent women from becoming computer scientists or software engineers.
Such abuse of statistics hides an important fact: the percentage of East-Asian women in the computing fields exceeds these women's percentage in the overall population of the United States. This phenomenon is due to the culture and genetics of East Asians.
The success of East-Asian women in computer science and software engineering proves that gender barriers do not exist.

ok, yet another site I stop visiting. I want slashdot to deliver one thing: tech news. I don't care for anything else when I go to slashdot. not about left wing, nor right wing news. I just want them transistors.
I know this gets modded to hell and deleted but let it be known: today you lost a regular reader. I hope the amount of clicks you get from your race/gender/politics baiting makes up for that.
Keep jerking off the corner cuck-boy, no woman will ever want you.
Imagine biology and reality and physics were not gender neutral. Imagine that people that have significant genetic material, different body composition, different organs, different bone structures and different reproductive roles to behave differently and have different abilities.
It would be an absolute improbable miracle to have people that different in their very essence and the code of all their cells to have the exact same abilities or that strengths and weaknesses of such different people would for each and every individual add up to exactly the same "desirability" or "dominance" or whatever human measure one can apply and not even have a slight statistical skew in one direction or the other.
And then imagine declaring the statistical differences between totally normal but totally different human variations to be identical by proclamation and that all differences are proof to oppression, shut down all debate to the contrary and allow only one viewpoint in scientifical debate.
Imagine putting two groups of people besides each other, one with an average height and bone density 80% of the other, and less than 70% average upper body strength and wildly differing body fat, muscle percentage and distribution and then claim they are literally the same. It would be the literal definition of insanity to do so.
Imagine for one minute that gender science was based on wishful thinking in opposition to physical reality, what their claims would be and how they would formulate arguments. Now compare it to actual gender science. What is the actual difference?
The topic was "closing the gender gap", not "talking to women in tech". I see no reason to only interview women for the segment. Anybody engaged in bringing women into tech fields is a valid guest. Blaming some phantom power structure looks like little more than sour grapes.
This article is such a crock of shit. I used to work in a technical support call center. There were almost zero women who ever even applied. The ones that did apply, most of them didn't meet the qualifications. About 5-10 out of 300 or so techs ended up being women. The men in that room WENT ABOVE AND BEYOND OUT OF THEIR WAY TO MAKE SURE THOSE WOMEN SUCCEEDED, and they did succeed. Stop blaming men for womens lack of desire to go into engineering. Every time I have ever seen it the guys support them.
There are still real herbal doctors out there, despite the fact that there are lot of sacammers out there that claim to be doctors, I got my penis enlarged with the help of Dr. Okpoko, and he also provided remedy for me which cured me from premature ejaculation and erectile dysfunction, I haven't been able to satisfy my wife since I got married, until I decided to check online on the internet if I could get help to my problem, so luckily I met his email address on one of the site I checked, I saw where his email was posted with a testimonial of how he help cured a guy from erectile dysfunction, so I decided to contact him and explain to him my own present predicament, and he promised to help me out, I thought he was trying to take advantage of me and just get my money because I have lost a lot of money in the past trying to get over this problem, but to my greatest surprise, he actually provided a solution for me as we agreed, after he received money from me to get the items he used in preparing the remedy he sent to me,
