The reason Apple is doing so well is that they turn out devices that suit the people's needs and are well-designed and reliable.
Sorry, why does this mean that everyone else doesn't?
His point is that the majority of other products are NOT well designed, nor are they reliable, as evidenced by the example he gave. You, on the other hand, didn't post very good evidence to the contrary to be persuasive...but good luck with that tablet gimmick analysis.
It appears the "secret sauce" you speak of isn't quite as mystical as you claim. The secret sauce is called making stuff that doesn't suck. It's pretty easy to do when you are as big as Apple and you make "not sucking" a corporate culture.
With all the supposed lock-in, Apple sure is doing a good job at making it easy for me to operate 4 Macs and one Windows 7 PC running in my house. With all this lock-in, you'd think it would be impossible to use any of my Apple media on my Win7 computer, but this simply isn't true.
I was thinking the same thing...who in the hell still uses ink jet printers? I know they thrown them in for free when you buy a computer, but that's only because they'll recover that cost the first time you have to buy a new ink cartridge.
Yes, but when one political ideology wants to ignore one of the main factors of the Civil War (cough, slavery, cough), and continually spout "States' Rights!" (cough, States' rights to own slaves, cough), it is immediately clear that some people aren't interested in "facts".
I'm intrigued by who you think will be left to teach after your purges have been carried out.
People trained in education who know how to eliminate personal opinion and bias from teaching facts? I really REALLY hate trapezoids, but I'm not going to let this hatred stand in the way of teaching students how to find the area of a trapezoid.
Anything that the middle to far right "Conservative" doesn't agree with is automatically labeled "liberal". I don't think they know what that word means, and it surely isn't as effective as an insult as they think, either.
Are people criminals because they are ugly, or are they ugly because they are criminals? Did being ugly cause them disadvantages, which drove them to a life of crime to help overcome, or did a lifestyle of crime make them ugly?
I'm going to guess mostly that people who have bad judgment often: a) look weird due to their lack of judgment, and b) do stupid, criminal things because of their lack of judgment.
I've been gaming since Asteroids, Zork and Jumpman, to name a few, but I have to agree with emo guy...modern games (on handhelds, at least) ARE super lame. Hell, most of them are just classic games like Breakout, but using the accelerometer in the phone instead of a joystick.
Not to sound like a neophyte, but this is dangerous for widespread HTML5 adoption. Most users just want it to work. I'm using a fairly modern browser here at work (IE7) and it doesn't work without doing something (I don't know what I have to do, it's probably really easy, but my point is still valid).
I'm an American, but I lived in England for several years. Maybe it's my American bias, but we would always pick stores that had free parking over trying to find a garage or meter to park at. Lots of British stores are starting to figure it out (ASDA and Sainsbury's, in our case).
Yeah, I'm not buying it either without a citation.
I have one, though--In his book 'Traffic', Tom Vanderbilt explains why having meters actually IMPROVES business. Without meters, people park their cars in front of your store and leave it there all day, preventing new customers from coming to your store.
"supporting each other" only works when all sides cooperate. Unfortunately, there's an entire segment of the world (normally called "Middle East" or similar) that doesn't want to play along.

Soldiers can't be charged with conduct unbecoming for bad behavior unless they are in uniform, so why should it be different?
This is the least true statement I've read on slashdot in a long time.
"Real" work...riiiight. Because nobody has ever gotten any real work done using, oh....OSX and Photoshop? Or Win95 and Access?
More "real" work is accomplished via a GUI than not. You are not special because you like to do things the "real" way.
"States' Rights!" That's southern for "owning slaves".
Are you saying these things as if they were a bad thing? Most of that stuff sounds pretty good to me.

Best post this month--count this Texan in the "embarrassed" category as well.
You know, the worst part about living in Austin is that it is surrounded by Texas.

Maybe I want a copy of what I'm copying to remain on the hard drive for easy retrieval and reuse later?
...nearly drive me away from slashdot forever.
When did this become Alex Jones' personal tinfoil-hat blog site?

Dang...this is the first first post ever that was actually substantive.
"HTML5 not supported in this browser".

Oh wait, I guess you said "2 hour parking spots"... I posted too quickly...sorry.

But why do we need to spend so many billions on stealth jets when our number one enemy is planting IODs and have absolutely no air defense?
Because it is a bad idea to plan for the current enemy and not the future ones?

In loco parentis...google it...love it.
Yes, because Jolly Ranchers are SOOOOO messy.
