while I agree that there is a use for multi tasking on the iPad I think the idea of window based multi tasking the way you see it in OS X or windows is completely in appropriate for a tablet device. Sure it would be good to have applications really running in the background for some things, but the idea of trying to do window management on a tablet (and deal with window widgets like scroll bars) is one of the reasons that previous tablets have been a failure. It's simply not the right UI design for the form factor.

Both Microsoft and Apple are big enough that they can make large bets on new technology and ideas and have them fail. You are right that other companies flame out when they make a large bet and it doesn't work out, but that doesn't apply here.

If the iPad were a complete flop and nobody bought it, that wouldn't kill apple. It wouldn't even cripple them. It would represent a large waste of time and capitol, but the company would go on doing what it does. that is the advantage of being a big company.

Certainly people do loose fingers all the time while using table saws but thats mostly becaue they either dont know how to use them or they use them all the time and they become complacent about safety and that 1 in a million mistake ends up biting them in the ass because they use the tool all the time, eventually you get distracted or unlucky.

I have little doubt that he was using the tool in a way that is specifically warned against in the documentation. There is no reason for your finger to get within a foot of the blade on one of these things if your using it properly with a guide and a jig.

All that said, I misuse tools all the time, one day I might be this guy.

Since the API for web kit hasn't changed a ton its easy to write one browser that works with both the old and the new webkit, but the under the hood differences are more significant. The Mozilla team doesn't want to have to manage their own rendering engine on the older platform. I can understand it. Personally I think 1.4 should still be supported but I understand the decision.
