  1. Re:Wrong way on Mice Given an Experimental Gene Therapy Don't Get Fat (boingboing.net) · · Score: 2

Every time there is an article on weight someone comes in and says, "people just need to eat less." When you get older you will learn more. Some people are just "fat" and there's nothing they can do about it. My wife and I eat the same meals every day. She is skinny and healthy while I am obese. Same meals. It is NOT always a matter of counting calories. I have two daughters. One can eat a gallon of ice cream every day and she is medically underweight. The other only eats twice a day like a bird and is obese. Science will figure it out eventually but it isn't as simple as people would like to think it is.

When Facebook creates an account for someone that account is FOREVER and I can find people there. Compare this with email addresses which tend to change every few years as people get new internet service. Plus there's no place you can go to find someone's email address. When the internet first went public I asked why the post office doesn't offer an email address to every person the way it assigns a postal address. If they did this it would be FOREVER and we could find people using that method.

  4. I think it comes down to price and portability. When the iTunes store priced music appropriately and eliminated copy protection (giving portability) music piracy almost went away. If the same could be done for movies I believe we would see a repeat in that market as well. It makes no sense that I can buy a slightly older hit movie for $5 out of a bin at Shopko and play it anywhere but if I want it from iTunes (limiting where and how I can play it) I'm stuck paying $15 or even $20.

When my grandparents were young they couldn't make a living in Kansas farming so they packed all their belongings into their truck and drove to a place where they could earn a living. I moved into a small development two years ago that has an HOA. I love the HOA. Every house I've ever owned came with a neighbor who wanted to paint his house purple, play loud music all weekend, park a motorhome in front of my house for the summer, and leave their dogs outside all day with no interaction leading to constant barking. I was relieved to move into a neighborhood were I don't have to put up with that anymore. Of course it also means I had to submit pictures/plans of the shed I intended to build but that's just so the look of the neighborhood is preserved and I didn't mind. A lady two houses down defied the HOA and put a cheapie roof on her house that doesn't match the style of the neighborhood. She then put it up for sale and it took over a year to sell it below what she originally paid. So those rules do seem to help preserve house values. So I love my HOA. I wouldn't force it on anyone but I love them.

To the most recent anonymous coward (it's confusing isn't it?) I can give examples. 1) before managers meetings the women would meet with each other, arrange to agree on what they wanted from the owner, then when the meeting would start they would abandon each other and even belittle the others ideas in favor of their own. After a few backstabbing events I learned not to trust them. 2) they would tell the owner they could accomplish some difficult assignment and then realize they had no idea how to do it. Then they would come to me and I would complete the entire project with the good faith we would share the credit. Instead they would announce to the owner that "they" finished the project despite working with the difficult IT person. They would do the same thing to each other. Taking credit for another persons work. I could go on... I've worked with some very accomplished women but when they get together in a group watch out.

I spent about twelve years as an IT director. I had access to every email account and every document created including financials. I discovered that most of my co-workers where doing their absolute best to stab each other in the back. The lies were rampant. Management was also lying to the employees (leading from the top down?) about company finances. It made me very unhappy to know about all the horrible things they were doing to each other. I think I would have been much happier not knowing all of those things. So my recommendation is to ignore all of that information you could "see" and just do what's necessary for your job.
