Well, in the words of my German air force buddy who is now a Patriot missile operator: "If I can't fly, nobody can."

Probably something akin to that. Then again, a given handheld or even vehicle mounted radio only has SO much bandwidth upon which it can transmit...it's not quite as simple as simply changing frequency to avoid a jammer, as noted with the wiki link above. A base or a naval vessel has quite a bit more flexibility, and thusly broadband jamming would be harder (plus they can potentially overpower a jammer if they've got a beefy enough transmitter). I guess it depends...sometimes it is worthwhile to deafen everyone if your eyesight is keener than your opponent's...

Still, if you are transmitting voice on let's say 150 Mhz and someone is transmitting a high pitched whine (taking up more bandwidth, thusly...16khz or so) at a higher amplitude than your voice transmission, it's gonna get cruddy. Even FM gets F!'ed up by this. Then again, all you have to do is change frequencies, but I don't see where attenuation comes in handy for defeating a broadband jammer.

Same principle would apply to airborne data transmission, I would think. Correct me if I'm wrong, I only renewed my license for the hell of it because I am a bad ham and the internets is more fun than my HT :(

The pic from TFA looks a bit dainty for combat use. I think a whip antenna is probably still more reliable and has a smaller radar signature for short range communication (IE a couple dozen miles). And the big ones, well, there's no hiding them.

Plus that whole bright and hot thing tends to attract the attention of certain guided missiles and sensor systems...not good! Maybe if they paint the glass or something...at least the light problem is solved.

Blackwater doesn't get to go postal with fucking impunity (at four to five times the rate that real soldiers get paid). Even our legitimate servicemen and women are twiddling their thumbs. CNN doesn't have something really gut-wrenching to cover (although it seems the media have become bored with the war because it's the same thing on and on now). And our fearless leader (and the puppeteers, ie, PNAC) has no glorious cause with which to catapult America back to its "former" greatness. I think it's important for users (and developers) of such sites to keep in mind that most people want only a limited degree of visibility. Like you said, people do want to share those drunken escapades with their friends, but not necessarily with strangers, or worse, employers, or worse, mom and dad.

So it's perhaps prudent to give control over the visibility of content, but at the same time, I think people need to realize that a person's MyFace page is not necessarily descriptive of them in every environment or context. Most people behave differently at work than they do with close friends. And being a lawfully drunk weirdo on your own time doesn't really bear much on your professional life unless you show up hungover. Which could happen either way.

My point: people should not take these sites too seriously.

"Always delight the customer" was the motto of my system design class instructor in college...I say that a lot around my workplace and people are a bit astonished, since apparently my predecessors didn't have that maxim. I don't think Web 2.0 concepts would contribute to that end, much as outsourcing has failed to do for a few reasons (semantic barrier with language, time difference, lack of face-to-face interaction, etc.). And on top of that, the developers before me simply tried to pass off half-assed technical solutions ("here, go into SQL and run this script, and then change this variable and run it again" instead of automating the task or at least writing a small app to help them manage their data). Same with just giving dbowner to every non technical person who had to access the server directly instead of through a controlled interface that strictly let them do what they needed to without having the power to blow up everything. Plus, half the problems are the kind that non-IT folks just put their hands up and say "I don't know what the hell is wrong with it," or call us and say "is the server down?" Which server? Good luck learning Linux commands and Python, laiety. Anyways, I definitely agree: really kick ass at your job and you'll keep it. And the best way to do that is to delight the customer...especially if that customer is your boss or 100% indispensible people in the company.

Kind of like SOME (not all) professional, career "musicians" will write complete crap songs...they have to to put bread on the table, whereas an independent or otherwise part-time musician will have a better self-filter, and say "nah, it isn't that good." Marketing really does determine who you see though...I've seen many top notch bands locally (better than some national acts I've seen/heard), but not many people outside of the area will know them. And I know there can only be x number of national acts, but still...
