  1. Oregon Healthcare on Schneier Asks Why We Accept Fax Signatures · · Score: 1

My wife is an RN for a clinic. Recently, the state of Oregon began requiring faxed prescription requests for certain meds, disallowing the more standard email system that was in use.

My opinion? It's a way to keep more state employees busy, manually typing in information that would have already been there with an email.

We all want free speech, well most of us, I guess.

At what point are we letting free speech go to far? I mean, I've seen many people want to supress the neo-nazi's calling for the elimination of the Hebrew race, but it's okay for Moslem extremists (notice I specify EXTREMISTS) to do and say whatever they want.

When do we cross the line here? Is it okay to allow them to show an explosion of a car bomb? What if their own countrymen are hurt/killed? What if Western soldiers are hurt/killed? What if your brother or sister is hurt/killed?

I'm not saying that the above applies to this issue directly, I'm just saying we have to have the discussion.

On the other end - right now, it's US law. It has been for all of my life and a little bit more. That doesn't make it right, but as no one (Democrats or Republicans) are interested in changing it enough to risk the political hit from the Cuban-American community AND OTHERS that seek to maintain the status quo, this is the way it is.

On the other hand, I noticed that this was a 2004 ruling, but was only acted on now. It makes me wonder if someone in the government is putting out a few reminders as the fake transition of power in Cuba goes on.

    Anyway, back to the program.

Well, reading the discussion here has really made me change my thinking on these registry's.

I have two kids, a girl and a boy. I worried over this kind of thing as they grew up (my daughter is off and married now, my son would pull the arms off someone messing with him, Wookie style). When this registry was first put into action, I thought it was a useful idea. Keep an eye on the bastards, ya know?

Well, I won't deny that I find this kind of crime terrible, as do nearly all people. I also do NOT believe that their records should just 'go away' like some of you do when they serve their time.

These databases are terribly ineffective. I respect the idea of making sure that LAW ENFORCEMENT can watch and track them. I respect the idea of LAW ENFORCEMENT making the decisions to warn people in the neighborhood if they feel that someone is a threat. I just don't see (after many of your convincing arguments) why there is any value in these databases.

That's quite a fall from Kennedy's vision of space travel, regardless of politics and Cold War era posturing. Where would we be now if we had continued the vision of the politicians, astronauts and managers that put us on the moon? Mars was a discussion in the early 70s. Moon Bases. Who knows? Right now, the russians are probably more interested in keeping it working so they can keep shipping bored rich people up there as tourists. Granted, we're learning lots about space construction (probably) with it - but we would have learned it doing many other projects as well. I'm a RABID supporter of the space program, but I just can't see what we've gained by building a bus station in space (and one that wants to fall out of orbit, at that).

It's a way to discover the skies, see amazing things and enjoy astronomy. I have found over the years that I was president of my local Astronomy club that the majority of those that went out and purchased what they needed for photography right away rarely did it, while those that spent the time with a simpler telescope and the pure joy of astronomy eventually moved into photography. In addition, careful buying will set you up under your budget. Set aside the rest to be ready to become an addict!

Yes, the government uses our taxes for useful things - but everyone must remember that each person sees 'useful' differently. If all that money went to infrastructure, I'd honestly pause and think about it as well. I guess I just don't trust any politician to do it right.

Oh, and the fire department and most road repair is paid for by local taxes. I know that at least where I live, there isn't much money being spent on XRay boxes and strip searches by the county.

Taxes? C'mon - it doesn't matter one bit what we THINK should be done with taxes. The odds of your tax money going to anything but bean-curd studies in Western Iowa if it wasn't going to security is pretty slim.

I agree with all, that there CAN be a point where we go to far. I also will note that some of the security measures we've had in place are beginning to go away. Shoot, tell you what, I'll even agree with you that taking your nail clippers from you on the airplane is silly.

But the reality is that all you are all really saying is that you think better and smarter than everyone else. Maybe you do.

The current administration is in place precisely because the average American doesn't want to be treated like they are dumb. Whether you think they are or not doesn't matter. Until those running against the current power structure learn that their mannerisms and speech often translate to "You're not smart enough", that's how it's going to be.

Reagan is a classic example. Whether you liked him or hated him I don't care. The fact that he didn't make his constituents feel like morons was what put him in office.
