Believe me, I have a very clear understanding of what benefits small African communities, possibly better than most people outside of a very few constructive aid groups.
The use of cell phones is largely status based and many of the users and uses are pure evil. The people making millions off of Africa aren't putting very much of it back into the local economy and a large percentage of the people benefiting from the growth in the cellular industry are from China, the Philippines, Malaysia, Australia and various Arab nations.
Overall, quality education and good medical support for the next generation would be far more constructive to these groups. Decent reliable communication has been available to even the smaller villages for over a decade now, but in a village shared format and has worked well.
Caring for, nurturing and improving the next generation would give them a far more valuable future, but throughout the region there is a short-sighted approach born out of desperation.
Just out of curiosity, how much time have you spent working in North west africa?
This is the same company that wants to charge full price for virtual cards in their MTG online game. And AFAIK, there is currently NO way to convert those virtual assets into real cardboard.
With that as your benchmark, is there any expectation of sanity from these people ?
I've done extensive work on cellular delivery in some of the world's poorest places - Niger, CAR and Guinnea Bissau. In all of them, I found that people would pay whatever it took to have a cell phone, even if that meant no medicine for the kids or no shoes to walk to school in.
The location feature on every 1st gen iPhone I know of (around 12) have not been working since the 2.0.0 update. Apple say that they know about this, but there has been no sign of a fix yet:(
So basically, to secure my users, Google Apps want me to pay $50 per user, per year. I have 5 users that use my domain, so this is $250.00 per year. Just to give me SSL which they give to their non-domain users for free.
This is on top of limiting how many aliases I can have per user (and trust me, the + aliasing solution is pretty useless with the number of big name sites who do not accept it!)
So... can anyone recommend a replacement for Google that will give me mail and calendars?
So who paid for this woman to be prosecuted? Well, if you bought any music by any of the bands at http://www.atlanticrecords.com/artists just before or during this trial, then YOU might have helped to fund this prosecution.
Artists that financially support this action include: Bjork, Jimmy Page and Robert Plant, Led Zeppelin, Missy Elliot, Rob Thomas and Bloc Party.
I fully agree with this provider. Providing shell access to a shared machine is madness and you cannot provide security for your users this way.
SFTP requires that SSH be running, so there is always a risk of shell access being gained through breaking scponly or whatever other jail you use.
Virtual machines are the only way I know of providing this, and they cost more because of setup / maintenance costs. Failing that, FreeBSD jails, but they are unpopular due to people wanting Linux hosting.
You get what you pay for - live with it or pay more.
Any advice on such a camera? I'm looking for a decent compact and every single one I can find either suffers from shutter lag, poor zoom range or horrible noise / purple fringing.
Of course, I make things worse by wanting RAW as well:)
Is it just me or is that UK version just too vague to be of any real use? There are so many exceptions and exemptions that I couldn't really see myself arguing my case based on that.
I've carried live ammunition on an international flight by accident once. I put my firearm in the safe before rushing to the airport but forgot the spare magazine in my jacket pocket. No alarms were set off leaving the country, but I crapped myself on the way back in. Still, I didn't get stopped returning through Accra either.
My visa debit card clearly says Visa debit on it and people still ask me if it's a debit or credit card. This normally only happens in places that charge 2.5% for using a credit card though.
Barclays Capital has already forced all of its contracters to take a 10% rate cut and all contractors renewing at RBS also have to take this rate cut.
The big win for contractors in the UK is the flexibility you mention, but in the US, you mostly get that with regular staff. The idea of an 'at will' state means that you can just hire and fire as you like. Don't like the fact that your peon keeps calling in ill? Fire him! That's a lot harder to do in most of Europe.
We're delivering millions of dollars of savings every year through grid computing, as well as increasing our profits and the amount of capital we have on-hand to trade with. Believe me, grid computing isn't low on the priority list around here:)
But we have no way of stopping people in other countries making and using guns, and people in the UK can still see pictuers and videos of this. I think that we should immediately get a law through forcing ISPs to censor gun sites, especially with the glorification of the handgun and its increasing use in urban gangs.
We have a similar problem with knives, and I think all access to the Leatherman site should be blocked. I mean, why should I be able to see pictures of an item that is illegal to carry on the streets of London?
Finally, we have a very real problem with speed here. We have laws about it, but we can't control people in other countries. This means that these people can make videos of things going really fast and upload them to Youtube and other places. People in the UK watch these videos, and then go out and do crazy things on the roads, killing them and others.
As we don't have any means of controlling the production of these videos, it would make sense to control distribution and viewing of these, to remove that impetus to commit crimes that British people are currently faced with.
I don't actually read the daily mail - I'm commenting only on personal experience. I'm actually about to take my second trip outside the country to get treatment for something that is just taking too long here.
If I stay and wait for my slot on the list, there is a chance I will never regain full use of my foot after an accident. By going to a '3rd world country' (South Africa) I will be able to resolve this and carry on with my life.
That's not true at all. Redemption has been turned off since V3.0 was released several months ago.
For at least the last quarter of a year there has been no way to redeem any cards and that is still the case.

I quit because it made me so sad.
Because they have the mythical step 2...
1. ???
2. Wait until someone has committed too much money to a project to walk away, then sue them for a cut
3. Profit!
Yeah, most of the problems being reported seem to be by UK users.
Are you in the UK on O2 ?

Unless you're using Google apps to host your domain, in which case you're screwed as you don't have this option.

Were YOU funding any of this terrorism ?

They were behind the couch this whole time!
I'm surprised this doctor isn't being sued by NICE out here. We're such a nanny state :)

Yeah? I'm still withholding the $20,000 per year that I used to spend on visits to the US and I know a lot of other people in the same situation.
Not all of us care enough about the falling dollar to compromise our morals.
What's X11-like about the Apple windowing system ?
Where's the "+1 - Scary assed shit" moderation option? I could absolutely see our new home office s^Hminister doing just this!
