It's the front man for several big music companies and as long as their names (Sony, BMG, etc) are out of the headlines, it is doing its job.
And that's why I keep posting comments in these article's pointing out the actual company involved in this suit. Sure, I get modded down, and Mr Beckerman lectures me time and time again about how the RIAA is these people, but they're all missing the point - we're missing a chance to do REAL PR here and properly educate people.
We need to change all article headlines here to something along the lines of 'RIAA on behalf of Atlantic records is suing...'
The summaries need to start containing something along the lines of 'RIAA is suing on behalf of Atlantic Records. Atlantic is the home for artists such as , , and '
This way we're not just associating the label with the extortion, but some of their artists. This will do two things for us:
People will see the many companies that make up the RIAA as evil
People will associate popular artists from a label with the evil lawsuit. That will hopefully drive the artists to push for change because now they are being dirtied in the public eye
I don't believe that any of these crosses the boundary into libel, but obviously check with a lawyer. It would be really nice to see artists getting hurt by this, because I'm convinced that is the only way to change the current behaviour.
If you look at the documents for this particular round of abuse, this appears to be Atlantic NOT the RIAA vs. How many people here (without Google please!) can name 3 artists on Atlantic? I know I can't. So how about we show the readership who is sponsoring this terrorism ?!

Move to Europe - we get to decide what apps we install on our phones:) I've never had a phone that I couldn't add an app to because of rights management / Operator control.
That's some pretty flawed thinking there... you're saying that we should revisit ALL of our archived media on a regular basis to transcribe it to some new format ?
With more media being created all the time, this is just not feasible. We do need a reliable, solid storage medium that will last 50+ years into the future.
Steve Jobs LIED in that article. He sells music today WITH DRM that the artists are quite happy to have sold without DRM (as evidenced by sales elsewhere).
Steve Jobs has a very good reason to say that he wants to get rid of DRM... multiple european countries considering sanctioning his products here.
The guy is a major part of Disney now, and Pixar before that. He's been massively into DRM for a lot longer than just the iTunes store lifetime.
I've tried exactly that track with Tesco here. In the end I walked out with the DVD and no money back. They would not budge.
So I called the DTI, who told me to call consumer direct (on an 0870 number no less!). Consumer direct told me that because the goods were opened and not in a saleable condition, the vendor was not obliged to take them back.
I explained that the goods did not work with my equipment, but that didn't make any headway.
So I gave up.

But can you boot off of your shiny new SATA controller ? Last I checked , there wasn't a single SATA II controller available for the G5 range of macs that you can boot from.
This, combined with Apple deprecating the entire IR stack, leaving one of my devices unusable is slowly but surely driving me back to Linux.
This post is not a troll at all. The poster is simply pointing out that we're spending trillions to save billions.
We see the same thing in the UK. They want to spend hundreds of millions of pounds on ID and they say that this is to stop benefit fraud and illegal immigration. The cost of the scheme is a large multiple of the cost savings over the life of the project, but to someone, this math makes sense ?!
I don't know about what other options I have, but to copy and paste in EVERYTHING uncluding terminal, I use apple-C and apple-V. That works everywhere that copy and paste works.
Nice attack there buddy. I've spoken to both of my RH account managers in the UK and been turned down on all occasions. I'm not looking for a free download version because that wouldn't work. I'd need the cert for Satellite including some test provisioning / monitoring / management entitlements and that can only be issued by RH.
It's not terribly bright to call people liars when you don't have all the facts.
I can get trial versions from MS for free so why should I have to pay to get a trial version of a product that I contributed code to ?
I already have my RHCE and have no intention of spending any more money with them for the next year or two at least. As for contacting a Red Hat rep, believe me, I've been down that road and the response was universally unhelpful.
MythTV is still useless to me... I look at it every year or two, but there is still no clear way for me to plug my Sky satellite system into a Myth box and manage that with programming, etc... Sad, because I'd buy a box and get going in a heartbeat if I could use my Satellite.
I travel pretty light (or used to until I took up photography), and the one essential in life is my Suunto watch. It has a compass that is easy to use and read, 3 alarms so I catch my trains / planes, and a barometer. I think the main reason for the barometer is to feed the altimiter (which I no longer use), but it's great to get a snapshot of what the pressure is doing (and as a result what the weather is likely to do) just by looking down at your wrist.
I've never been wrong about the weather while wearing this, and sat out some awesome storms in shelter. I've also shown up at the DZ in the rain, only to jump 20 minutes later:D
What do you mean hurt no-one ? It destroyed careers, forced men of integrity to walk away from a job where they had done nothing wrong, reduced the already failing morale at HP and damaged the company reputation.
So how do I get a trial version of their software to learn on and update my skills? Oh, I can't. Sun will give me trials of all of their new software.
How do I get trial versions of their Satellite products so that I can update my skills on that to the newest versions? Oh, I can't. But Microsoft will give me trial versions of their server management solutions.
Sad to say, but Red Hat are often less open than Microsoft. Big corporations can get anything they want from them, but even after contributing numerous bug fixes to Satellite, and identifying a design flaw in RHN Proxy and supplying a fix with proof of concept code, I STILL can't get a trial version to keep my own skills up to date. Red Hat are very happy to take from people, but not at all happy to give back.
They'll lie and hide behind Oracle, saying that they can't give out Satellite trials because of the closed source, proprietary database they based it on, and yet Oracle are more than happy for me to download and use their database in test and development environments.
I've never understood this either. To be honest, in every code shop I've ever worked, I enforce the international standard for all log file naming, etc. This is because it's easy to compute which date is later without having to use date classes or anything...
20070303 is bigger (so more recent) than 19990202. Nice and simple, sorts well for output and archiving, etc.
Why I would ever want a format that doesn't follow some kind of pattern I just don't know... I can understand biggest, smaller, smallest (YYYYMMDD), but bigger, smallest, biggest (MMDDYYYY) just doesn't scan for me.
You got the labels in there right at the start - that is a very good start!
Is there any chance of listing one or two bestselling artists from that label as well ?
To adopt to the new realities ? WTF ?

For heaven's sake Mac OS X does the same thing.
You sure about that ?

Thanks - that's really handy info... Hopefully Sky will be supported on some solution then.
I've asked about this on the lists a couple of times but never got anything quite as useful as your post.

Can you post some more information about this ? I don't really understand what a CAM is, but I'm desperate for any way to get Sky working with MythTV

This shows everything that is wrong with legal systems in the 'free' world.
And Fedora is worthless to anyone who wants to run a server because each release is only supported for a year.

Please list the number of average americans who can name all 50 states... I don't think exercise is the main problem here :)
As for rugby players, I work with a couple who are incredibly bright.
Could care less is not the same as couldn't care less... Parse this statement and you'll see the problem.
Couldn't care less means that it really is at the bottom of my priority list - I couldn't possibly care any less than I do now.
Could care less means that it is more important to me than some other things. There are other things that I care less about than this.
Doh ! Massive apologies - I was responding to the wrong person. Although, in my defence, I'm still responding to that statement :)
