  1. Re:What you don't see on French Train Breaks Speed Record · · Score: 1

I live in the UK, so I used to spend a lot of time on trains. Here's some questions that people often forget to ask though...

So you drive to a station in SF and park - where does all this space magically come from for parking? Parking in SF felt like getting mugged, only less kind and polite.

Then you hop onto a train and head for LA... You get there, and then what? How do you get around? You rent a car at the other end? That might be fine for a business traveller, but for someone with kids, etc. that makes it a nightmare. It also negates the cost savings of using mass transport.

Then lets chuck in delays. I don't use trains in the UK any more because I can't afford to. Missing a business meeting costs me money, and on the three occasions (over 5 months) that I used trains for long distance travel, I missed my meetings. That's despite planning to arrive 1 hour early on each occasion! So unless you have 100% confidence in your ability to deliver, no-one is going to use the system.

You need a lot more than just some track. You need convenient mass transit at both ends of the journey, you need a lot of other infrastructure to make this work.

The only thing that even comes close is an L1, but that requires that you work for a company with a presence in the UK and the US for at least 1 year, and then have an offer to work for that same company in the US. And it's non-trivial to get, unlike the E3.

Jeez! I can't believe how low the self esteem of the US posters here have got.

As a country, you used to want to be the best in the world. The American people I knew 15 years ago were full of pride, but they were true patriots.

Today, all you want to be is better than China. Or better than North Korea. As a nation, you've forgotten what true patriotism is and what sacrifices freedom requires, and you just want to get by.

Once, you wanted to be great. Now, you just want to be good enough. How sad :(

We don't live in a barn, but we do have 2 pets. The hair got stuck in the carpet and even vacuuming (with a number of devices) didn't get it out.

Because of my allergies, we had to sweep first to get all the hair out of the carpet, then vacuum for dust, etc.

It brought a large smile to my face when I opened the box on my original Dyson (DC08 maybe?) and found along with the instructions for use, a rant about patents and how little they helped when he had to fight a bigger company.

From what I can tell, even though he had patented all of his work, it still cost him an arm and a leg to stop Hoover from just copying and destroying him.

Having said that, I'll never go back to another vacuum cleaner. It's sad, but Dyson has seriously increased the quality of my life. The pet brush and power attachment for the one I have made my house a LOT cleaner than before, and instead of 2 hours (sweep carpets THEN vacuum), I'm now down to 1 hour to do the whole job. And I'm healthier :)
