There has also been an article in german's well-known c't magazin that covers the process to create your very own live-windows-xp-cd. Just look at c't 02/04 p.180 and following.
Thanks for your help! Well, I think I found the problem: Du to the fact that you have to specify the source compatibility I forgot to provide the correct options for the Java compiler:
javac -source 1.5
This is quite bad. Why would I download the newest JDK if I have to switch that on all the time? That's annoying! Sun should change that.
Has anybody tried to download and install this baby on a Windows XP machine? I'm not able to use any of the new features (compiler tells me that symbols (methods, etc.) are unknown).
Is this possible? I don't have any other JDK on my system and I took the examples on the Sun page. Is anybody else experiencing this?
I actually do have a site up with some movies (at about 150 at the moment) I really enjoyed watching and writing reviews. Most of them might be well-known, but I think there might be some quite unpopular stuff, too.
I called it: Jilted Generation.
Comments welcome!
I can remember playing Space Quest IV as if it was yesterday: The hillarious shopping-sequence with all the nifty details (I'll probably never forget SimSim and Boom and that Chicken-game) that made this a true classic. Although there are passages (especially in the beginning) that could get frustrated - there isn't any Sierra original without the chance of dying at every second.
I especially liked the atmosphere of Space Qust IV (which really was much more fun then Space Quest V [sorry to say so, but the scene where you will have to find your way through that gigantic space-ship in the end of SQ V really sucked]): The backgrounds were terrific at that time.
I'm definitely looking forward to take a look at SQ 7!
Now that I've downloaded and seen them all I wonder why there there's only a press preview of For The Birds. How comes? Will there possibly be a complete download for that?
My favorite still is Knick Knack! I laughed my head off as I was watching it in the movie theater! Incredible!
As we have Streamgate here, this is somehow pretty much what those hollywood-companies try to do. You will get a DSL (with 1024kbit/s download and 128kbit/s upload) and you could watch movies which will be "streamed" to you and could be watched for 24hrs.
Actually I read this book a long time ago. And I really liked it. To be honest: I become to know of this one on one of the sci-fi faqs that are around (somewhere).
Aynway, I think it's a very nice book and considering the fact that it was written 25 years ago it's defineatly worth a look (this man really had a gift in looking into what will become of us and the future.
In my opinion there's no one better to deal with cyberpunk than Gibson, that's true. But Brunner is defineatly one of the greater sci-fi writers I've ever read something of.
Ok people, the good news is that the firm who tried to sue Samba because of their name stopped their case! Story on Heise is here! After all a short and good end.
No! This can't be true: Such a great director as Kubrick didn't deserve to be taken over by some mulit-billion-dollar typical-hollywood-filmmaker as Spielberg! I'm sure that Kubrick would have made this one a terrific and social-critic-classic. But now I guess it's just going to be some nice effects bundled with some well-known actors. I was really looking forward to that after Kubrick's 2001 this would have surely been the second well-to-remember-film about humans and computers! It's just like if your thanks-giving-meal is going to be at McDonald's! What a pitty!
Just wanted to let all of you Leo-fans out there know that I've seen something quite amusing yesterday on german TV RTL (I guess it was): There was a Leo-Lookalike contest happening somewhere in Italy in order to promote The Beach. Well, the funny thing was that not even the sex had to be the same so even girls took part in that competition. A 16-year-old school-boy won first price: To be treated like DiCaprio for one day which means limo, bodyguards, etc. Nothing really spectacular, but funny thing was that even the tv-spokesman said, that the winner even looks better than the original.:))
Well, as far as I see it there are numerous other movies to get more attention than just that little nominee for SP:BLU. There is for example Matrix and Episode I being nominated for visual FX. Isn't that something more geeky than an original sound nominee? And even Fight Club (one of last year's finest if you ask me) got a nominee. But considering the fact that the last years there were only just one or two movies who got the whole fame (I just remember Titanic ) I wouldn't expect anybody else to get Oscars than American Beauty and Sixth Sense. But maybe they can convince me of something else...
First of all I would like to say that this palm-case looks quite neat. Although I just wouldn't do that to my little Palm. But how much time do you have to spend to do such things?
Then I would like to point out to a different fact: At a local university (in Germany) they are seeming to get interested into the PalmPilot and now offer classes about that. I think that's great news for all Pilot users as it seems Palms are no longer treated as toys or geek-stuff.
I don't really like Flash and it gives me the creeps to see something like this being seen as a cool move. Ok, licensing it this way is the best they could probably do, but think about it: Do you really like all those Flash-Sites? REALLY?
How comes I always get the impression that those guys at the Pentagon seem to have little creativity? Everytime there's a new movie coming out showing them some nice possibilities to glantly get more control they seem to bring up some new ideas of turning that into reality. This time it's Enemy of the State, huh? I think what they need is a skilled, creative head or maybe department. Besides: I think this is just a little joke again...
Well, better don't switch to Roman numerals! Or are you able to read the last line at the end of those elder movies (MCMCMMMMMVIII) or do you just believe that the first are ok and just look at the last few?;-)
Do you really believe that it could possibly taste good? I think you will get bluescreens right after you drank it, ctrl-alt-dels in the morning and scandisk by noon.;-)
Do I get that right? That poll's been made by using some simple method=get commands? Is that how people who know a lot about software, programming and operating-systems do make up their mind? Go to deja and do some clicki-clicki-stuff? I don't give a %$!# about that poll! I'm using whatever I think I know is best. Come on, how many of us do other polls than those on/.?;-)
According to that article I was relying on they surely were. Don't get me wrong: I think nuclear power is the future but I hate seeing people playing things down a little bit too much.
As I was on my way to look for happenings of this kind I stepped over heise's newsticker. They reported that two japanese nuclear powers plant seemed to have some Y2K-problems. Although they were (according to japanese officials) not really threatening it worries me to see people pretending to be Y2K-ready and then really having some major problems!
Well, as far as I can remember, Johnny Mnemonic (based on the short-story from William Gibson) was quite a nice experience. Although it's not actual "hacking" it's quite nice. And at the end-scene of the Lawnmower Man Jobe tries to break the code...
Of course nothing of this looks like real hacking, but then again I don't think Hollywood (or better say the majority of movie-watchers) are interested in endless lines of coding and attempts to break anything?
That's why there's only one movie left: 23. It's the story of Robert Koch (who is also known as Hagbard), the german guy that Cliff Stoll tried to catch in Cuckoo's Egg. The story drifts from hacking/cracking to the Illuminatus-stuff (conspiracy theory), but still pays a lot of attention to the ways of hacking/cracking. It's a german movie so I don't know if it's already been translated or will ever be. It won some quite impressive prizes here (for best actor and so on).

I've tried this with KaZaA and it seems to work very well. Thanks for the link!
