Well, if you actually knew anything of the situation Taco's speaking of - Apple or Sorenson allowing even a closed-source port of the Sorenson codec to a UNIX/Linux media player like, say, XAnim, or the now-popular Xine - then you could speak to it. They've both been asked many times, and Sorenson told Mark Podlipec (XAnim developer) and others that they were restricted, and could not allow it, by contract with Apple. Apple flatly denied this, claiming that Sorenson could do what they wished with their intellectual property, and Apple couldn't tell them what to do.

Now we find out the truth - Sorenson isn't allowed to do as they wish with their own intellectual property, as they claimed in the past, and Apple lied. No one's expecting anyone to open-source the Sorenson codec, QuickTime, or any other part of either. We just wanted to be able to play Sorenson-encoded video, and Apple didn't want to allow it.

I did have a Win98 install completely eat itself after converting an ext2 partition to VFAT - rebooted, scandisk ran, and suddenly everything was gone. Also, I've discovered that Win98 should not auto-check partitions that fall after the 1023rd cylinder - it does much more harm than good.

Have you seen this happen? With what versions of Windows? I'd definitely like to know, just for my own information.

And then the "help"? Frag the drive and reinstall.

And people eat this crap up. I've had the questionable joy of dealing with MS's so called "support" too, so I know what you mean. People actually consider "wipe out the whole thing and start from scratch" to be a totally acceptable solution. Shit, if every time your car failed to start correctly, you had to have the engine removed, rebuilt and reinstalled, no one would be able to afford to drive one, or they'd have so much time tied up in doing that, they'd never get around to DRIVING it.

Of course, people desperately want to believe that they're getting real value for their money by buying Microsoft products. To them I can only say: keep telling yourself that.
