A few months ago I bought a WeTab from these people http://wetab.mobi/en/, and it rocks. I don't know if it's already shipped to the U.S.A., as I'm in Europe, but the specs look really good: 2 USB ports, 1 mini HDMI, the usual audio out jack, and a proprietary port (for a dock) on the bottom, but unused at the moment (the company hadn't produced a dock yet). It runs a WeTabOS, which is basically MeeGo + a graphical interface known as 4tiito, and that OS can easily be replaced by whichever flavour of GNU/Linux you'd like (MeeGo, Ubuntu, ...), and I think someone could also try cramming windows on the SSD. The processor is an Intel N450 at 1.66Ghz, with 1Go of DDR2 RAM. There's also a webcam, a SIM port... Basically everything you would need. At less than the price of an iPad (I paid mine about 460 euros, while the iPad here is 499 euros).

Well I doubt if it's the case. In my opinion, it'll be a growing database of youngsters living mainly in residencies, the 'jeunes des cités' that every journalist talk about on the news. It'll be accessible only to cops and immigration police. But it gets worse: teachers are asked, in schools, to 'help complete the database' by giving every information about every children (country of origin, parents' nationality, everything), to help prevent immigration and to help track the 'sans-papiers' (people who just immigrated in France ans don't already have IDs, or people who just have their IDs discarded).

Ok, let me explain this: I only have eight fingers (five on right hand, three on left hand, call it a deformity), and what's interesting is that one of my left hand finger has a digital print different from the other. It has a straight digital print, whereas my other fingers have a left curved one ( | instead of / ) So: am I able to be delivered a passport or some kind of identity on which this deformity appear ? If not, well, where can I apply for a serial-killer job, knowing I can offer the guarantee of never being on any list ?

There are less glitches than in NeoOffice. I can't tell if it crashes more or not, because NeoOffice never crashed a lot on my computer; apart from that I've only been using OpenOffice 3 for a week. And it's a beta, so ... can't garantee it won't crash. But I'm impatiently waiting for the release of 3.0 stable.

Yeah I've been using the 3.0 beta for a week now, on my good ol' powerbook, and it rocks. Really. No X11, it's quick (can't tell how fast loading is from NeoOffice, but quite faster). I didn't run NeoOffice since. Sure, it can be quirky, it has its glitches, but it runs ok, and saves & restores document perfectly if it crashes (happened just an hour early, got everything I was working on restored). Great thing. Go, OpenOffice team, go! :)

  18. eBook reader, Sony & Amazon on Amazon's Ebook The Future of Reading? · · Score: 1

Ok, I've not RTFA, but i've quickly perused through the article, and first, one thing that's bothering me : no price yet. Sony's Reader has been for sale for some time now, and was recently out of stock, so I think it sold quite well. It hadn't been sold anywhere in Europe for now, that's a bad thing. Now I don't really see what's the point, on Amazon's eBook reader, of having a full keyboard and EVDO connectivity. Is that a thing that attract kids now ? putting some devices together, saying it's an advance in technology ? I prefer using the usb connection on Sony's eBook reader.
Another thing that's bothering me is the size of Amazon's eReader. The full keyboard adds to the size of the thing, and again I don't see the point of that keyboard. Maybe a bluetooth connection, so that we could buy eBooks with our cellphone, and then transfer it wirelessly. That would be a great thing i'd like to see in a future version of Sony's Reader.
