It's not enough that QuickTime notifies me there's an upgrade every time I open it. Now I get notifications from slashdot as well nagging me to upgrade. Will it never end?!
If we assume that some users what to have this autoupdate feature available, and there are a lot of them out there unfortunatly, doesn't MS have to include this verbage in their license? I mentioned the new language to my Uncle and I said how frightening it was. He replied that MS probably had to do it in order to run the autoupdates at all to avoid being sued by someone who turned auto update on and then got mad when a patch broke his box. While I don't like it, it does seem to be something neccesary to provide the auto update functionality.
This is slightly offtopic, but I'm curious what the market for CF development is like. I LOVE developing in CF but lately have been stuck in ASP and Java development. CF seems to have slipped in its prevalenca and I'm hoping that the new MX version will give it new life. Do you find that you have to push CF on people or are they coming in asking for it?
Judges jobs are not to make laws but to enforce and enterpert laws that are currently on the books. I applaud the judges for making a purely legal enterpretation of the law as it stands and I eagerly await the legisalture to jump on this and enact a new , more sane law.
This should be a lesson to us all that although we think that the problems we face are new atnf will soon lead to the end of the world as we know it, we must remember that there have been patents, big companyies, monopolies and greedy people in the past who held great sway on the way things were done. But somehoe things worked out and we made it through. Think of that the next time you get too woried about the end of the world or how evil BillG is.
It's like it's against some spiritual and holy sacrament to give blood to another person, consider donating organs, or even contemplate growing body parts from cells for various medical reasons.
The issue is not with growing body parts from cells. The issue is where you get the stem cells. The current Embryonic source requires you to end a life in order to harvest the stem cells. THAT is what people are against. There are other methods to get stem cells from adults without ending a life that have been shown to produce at least as viable stem cells. Why not go that route?
Most times it's just pointing out a useful site that might interest everyone. But in this case, it seems to server no purpose than to fry the "newton server".
What was the point of that last bit about the newton? We all know what the results will be, the first 3 people get in and then nada. Why bother wasting our time and the poor server's bandwidth?
Is this neccesary?

Is a PHP reference book really neccesary? With the excellent webpage they have I just see a book becoming outdated too fast. The only useful one would be the pocket reference edition of this book which I have but still use seldom.
If enough low level employees complain to their manager about this happening, and they will, that is a better way to get the word accross than trying to find a manager in a store and get her to listen to you. Better that it come from the people she has to listen to every day.
Wow, that's exciting. Except that I didn't see it actually drop. But I looked at the video and it certainly seems like it has dropped. Wow, I can't wait to see the real-time/slow motion replay.
Has anyone been able to get CNN video clips, like the one in the story, to work in Mozilla? I'm using 1.0 and all I get is a new little window and then nothing. I've got Real installed, and I think the plugin is installed. What gives?
I know that Corel Suite is cheaper than Office, but is it cheaper than Works? I thought Works was around $100. Sure you get more with the Corel Suite, but if it's me I want the machine price to go down. But, then again they probably aren't targeting people like me. *grin*
So MSFT won't make as much money as they could have, they still get some percentage off the top of this sale.
If you think that any decion on including MS works is going to dent Microsoft's cash flow I think you're sorely mistaken. It's not about cash flow. It's about giving OEM's a choice and about breaking the mindset that MS Word is the only word processor out there. HP and Dell might be wise to include both OpenOffice and WordPerfect and give the _user_ a choice.
Plus it looks good to the illiterati (aka the DOJ) who think that Corel is still a competitor to Microsoft. Why is it that you think the DOJ is so stupid to know what Microsfoft has investments in? I'm pretty sure that if they went into all the trouble of filing this case, they've probably done at least a tiny bit on investigation and found out where MS has it's money. And don't sell Judge KK short. She's not stupid and she's no stranger to corporate games. Just because justice doesn't work as fast as you want it to doesn't mean it doesn't work.
Trying to find more info on the crawlers, I popped over to Google and clicked on the first option ( http://science.ksc.nasa.gov/facilities/crawler.htm l) and sure enough, it was not responding.
It seems to me that processor speeds have relly shot up in the last 6 months. Before, there was always a nice tie between the advances in processor speed and the extra needs of Windows. This arrangment worked well for both parties in that everyone felt they had to have both to be right with the world. Has Intel (and AMD) now said to heck with MS we're going to put all the speed we can into our machines? Or, are we seeing a MHz race between Intel and AMD? With a viable competitor, Intel can no longer trickle out improvments at their own pace, they have to deal with someone else matching and exceeding their pace. What does this bode for the future of processors?
people are different, so dont be a dick
Actually, I think that's a concept we all could hear more often. Maybe it would sink in.
I think I can prove prior art. Unless you believe the conspirists. What, this is /. Conspire away.

Live free or Die! Our bandwidth is costing us what? Slashdot?! Quick, throw up some ads. We'll be rich!

NPR has commercial free coverage, but then that's not out of the ordinary for them.

He didn't say fix the worlds problems. He just said change the world. Big difference.
This sounds cool, but can you connect it to a PC? I don't have money for a Newton and a Mac.
Why the quick jump to version 7? Is it just to match AOL v.7 or some other strange reason that my small non-marketing brain can't figure out?

Dell still shows Works as their "cheap" option. HP however already has Corel as their "cheap" option.

Let's hope it doesn't take this long to get rid of MemoryStick!
