Why not just allow LAN play and when you either create a game or join a game on LAN, it does a quick connect to battle.net to verify your account? If it's good, you get in. If it's not good, you don't. That solves the problem and still allows LAN play.
I also agree: LAN play is what makes D2 awesome. I cannot count how many times my family has sat down in the same room and played D2 together.
From the makers of "The Sims" and their bajillion expansion packs, now we have the same with Spore! I, for one, am not buying any expansions until they all come out together in a big group like a 10-pack for $30. I might have to wait 2 years, but it'll be way cheaper, and I don't want to play an incomplete game anymore. I did that with The Sims and The Sims 2, worked like a champ.
The thing that disappointed me most about Spore wasn't the DRM. It was that the game could have been incredibly awesome right out of the box. But instead of that, they chose to release an incomplete game and a jillion expansion packs.
Why thank you.:) This is good and probably unlike to shift dramatically, but I'd be interested to see an updated poll since (from the article) "The poll was conducted before the Democratic and Republican parties held their conventions and before the headline-grabbing nomination of Sarah Palin as Mr McCain's running mate."
Does it also bother you that Europeans are supporting Obama almost unanimously?
Care to provide some sort of evidence to back that up? Otherwise, I could make the same comment about McCain, or even Ross Perot. Don't jump on the bandwagon of McCain-hating unless you can back up your flamebait comments with proof. And yes, your comments were definitely flamebait.
I agree with you 100%. I happen to believe in that "invisible man is living in the sky" as you put it. However, I also believe that theology and science should not be mixed because they offer answers to two totally different questions. Science endeavors to answer the "how?" while religion tries to answer the "why?" both are questions that neither can answer for each other.
"...men aged over 60 from 140 countries that practice polygamy to varying degrees lived on average 12% longer than men from 49 mostly monogamous nations."
Nations that mostly practice polygamy are also mostly desert cultures. So you could also word those findings as "...men aged over 60 from 140 countries that have alot of sand lived on average 12% longer than men from 49 mostly non-sandy nations."
I love how everyone jumps on the free will hating bandwagon instantly. It seems there are alot of people here who are in love with the concept of being meat machines that were determined from their own creation to play out a life without choice. Seems like a pretty sad existence to me, but that's beside the point. I pose this question: If you did not choose to murder that man, but instead it was determined for you, where is accountability? How can someone be prosecuted for a murder they didn't choose to commit, but rather were deterministically forced to do?
I think it deserves to be answered: are we talking about a "non-compete" agreement or a "non-competition" agreement? A "non-compete" agreement is a legal agreement where you agree to just declare guilt in a trial. A "non-competition" is a legal agreement where you agree not to be hired by a company that competes against the company you were with when you signed it.
(I'm a PhD Neuroscience student) It seems like more and more scientists are moving away from the beta amyloid plaque buildup hypthesis. While it seemed like a great lead, people who die with no symptoms of dementia or Alzheimer's Disease can still have a buildup of beta amyloid plaque as massive as the person who did die of Alzheimer's. It could be that high levels of beta amyloid plaque buildup increases the risk of getting Alzheimer's, though. It's a hard disease to crack, that's for sure. If this new drug really does work, it'll save 5 million lives a year, and that's just in the past few years; as the Baby Boomers all get past 65 we're going to start seeing a massive increase in Alzheimer's Disease.
"They say this volcano could provide enough energy to power thousands of households"...good! At last check there's only like 20 people living up there anyway.:P
No, you're not missing anything here. He lied about the "bullying" to get some recognition on/. This kind of article just makes me want to go and punch that guy in the face for making something up so we'd all go to his website. There was never any legitimate want to know how to deal with internet bullies. I think someone already mentioned there's like just 10 accounts on this site, so the number of users hasn't climbed like he said. And his goal of "I want to encourage folks to share their opinions, but constructive criticism was clearly not his goal." is a flat out lie. The supposed "bully" was clearly offering supportive criticism and even some well-wishes.
We should all get accounts on his forum and spam the crap out of him for this!
1) The summary said that the book was dated from the fourth century BCE. This New Testament was found in the fourth century *AD* (or ACE if you prefer, but since we're talking about Jesus, might as well be AD).
2) While this is the oldest surviving New Testament, that does NOT make it the oldest surviving version of Mark or any of the other Gospels. Historians have dated and reliable fragments (e.g. a couple pages here, a couple pages there, etc, a.k.a: all that's left after 2000 years of poor care.) from as early as the second century AD, including those with Mark's resurrection story.
3) And about the codex's Mark not having the resurrection, that's not really a big problem. The other three gospels in this codex DO have the resurrection story in them, so that stands to reason that Mark would have had the resurrection story if it weren't for a large number of pages being missing from the codex. From the article: "The Gospel of Mark ends abruptly..." which tells us that if it ends abruptly then it probably wasn't the end the writer meant. Also from the article: "Handwritten in Greek more than 1,600 years ago -- it isn't exactly clear where -- the surviving 400 or so pages..." which tells us that there's a substantial amount missing. So put two and two together: if the other gospels in the same handwritten codex have the resurrection, and Mark ends abruptly, and the codex is missing a alot of pages, then it's very reasonable to assume that the person who wrote this down did not mean for Mark to end that way.
I'm a PhD student in Neuroscience. Don't get too excited. This is merely just a piece of the visual cortex. How long until we can simulate the entire brain in real time? That's not likely for a long, long time, but not because we won't have the computing power (we'll have that in about 10 years), but because we won't have the entire brain mapped to simulate. In order to accurately simulate the entire brain we first have to understand each part's connections, how they work, and how they interact with the rest of the brain. Sadly, our knowledge of the brain is so primitive that I don't see us totally mapping the brain for at least another 100 years. Sound ridiculous? Ask anyone in academia in neuroscience, and they'll tell you that even tenured theories are being thrown out regularly when evidence to the contrary proves it wrong. There are even some who think we'll never fully understand the brain due to the fact that the best way to study it is in live humans and scientists are severely limited in that study by human rights laws.
After reading the comments on this article, it has become clear to me the easiest way to get modded up:
1) Laud the actions of Senator Kucinich.
2) Say something negative about Bush (perhaps "He's a mass murderer" or "He's an idiot" or my personal favorite "He's an idiot AND a mass murderer")
3) Throw in some extra bashing of Republicans.
I've discovered the Secret to Slashdot Success! Maybe I should go write a book or something...
The link in the summary that says "4th Edition rulebooks are now available", doesn't point to where I can go look at the 4th edition rules. The Wizards website still says that it's one day away.
Could someone please post a link to where I can actually look at the new rules? Or are they not actually available yet?

How do they know I'll be running that in 10 years? Crazy! They must be spying on me...in the future!
Does anyone else find "patron goddess" ironic? Patron comes from the Latin word "Pater" meaning "Father".

What's up with the nix and nod tags? They just started showing up...have I missed something? Is there a new meme I missed?
What's up with the 'nix' and 'nod' tags that are on nearly every story on Slashdot today?

Oh yes. You can create new stacks. I was in the beta program, and it was really easy to use too.
