Right-o. Don't forget that Evangelicals and Pentecostals speak n tongues, build compounds with guns, sometimes have multiple wives, some think they hear "God's voice" in their head and declaring themselves prophets with the ability to amend the Bible. My favorite is the 7th Day Adventists whose beliefs are based on Ellen White's ramblings because she was mentally ill from sustaining head trauma when she was younger. She predicted the end of the world that didn't happen. None of it could possibly be delusional craziness could it?

    My favorite part of this:

I am not just being a persnickety asshole boss, I am providing feedback, and directing a project.

See... you still don't get it though. Certain personalities want praise and admiration and that in whatever form is adequate to them. They are usually more narcissistic than others. There are other personalities however that are not interested in admiration to boost their self esteem. They don't derive their self worth from a popularity contest. They can provide their own basis for self worth. What these people want to know is what specifically did I get praised for? The reason is because they want to do more of the things that you find valuable to improve their performance and contribution to the company mission and support their families. They don't really care about you specifically praising them. You're just another human being. That's what people like you don't understand. 6. You can't "improve" on Ask Slashdot: How To Improve At Work When You're Not Getting Feedback? · · Score: 3, Insightful

"Improve" in the sense of working for an employer means better meeting the employer's expectations. If the employer is not providing expectations or feedback, you are trying to be clairvoyant which is not possible. One of my parents was like this. They would expect me to do things a certain way or at certain times but never inform me of that except by severely punishing me for not reading their minds. That's a toxic situation.

My advice, unless your employer doesn't question your performance and you can do whatever you like, leave. During the exit interview tell HR this is the main reason you are leaving. Hopefully they will take the feedback to heart but often employers don't because they are more often than not egotistical and believe they are infallible not open to criticism.

Just so you know, there is a cognitive bias whereby people think that everyone thinks the same and therefore they ought to arrive at the same conclusions, you know the "right" and "only" ones because you know there is a right way and everything is the wrong way (black and white thinking). They can't compute why someone wouldn't arrive at the "right way" independently other than there is something wrong with you and you are defective in some way. These people have the emotional intelligence skills of a rock and you don't want to work for them or be in any kind of dealing with them. They will make you miserable.

You clearly don't understand the concept of "your main tasks - the ones you are paid to do". If you work for a company or corporation, you are paid to do exactly what they tell you to do and if that means mentoring people and switching tasks to help other people complete their tasks, that's what you're paid to do.

Look I'm personally in agreement with your "No, Just... no" sentiment. The problem is the corporate universe doesn't give a single FUCK about that. Except we all need money to get by. It's a shitty game that we're all forced to play. If you learn how to play well, you can effectively buy your freedom and that to me is more worthwhile than anything else.

  19. Obesity (along with diabetes II) is caused by carbohydrate intake. Not fat.

It would be more correct to say improper balance of blood sugar due to improper carbohydrate consumption. Proper consumption varies by metabolic profile. I am an Endomorph, so if I look at a carb, I gain weight practically. However, if I eat low carb and do resistance training, I pack muscle on like a fiend. An Ectomorph does not have this experience.

  20. This gets into the definition of healthy. Whole grains are universally accepted as healthy. However, while full fat might not have the cardiovascular risk that was one believed, more fat = more calories (also as I am sure you know the source of fat is pretty important) and we are not doing so great with obesity. Also pretty much everyone agrees the western diet contains to much sodium. Bottom line, heart healthy, growth health, weight healthy do not necessarily line up squarely.

There is not a one size fits all set of dietary needs. As you might be aware of there is a range of metabolic profiles: Ectomorph, Mesomorph and Endomorph. Each of the variations of those metabolic profiles is going to require different customized dietary plans to achieve ideal health, body fat percentage and weight. Ideal weight also varies because even though people joke about being "big boned" people do in fact have different size skeletons. Those with larger frames are capable of supporting more muscle mass and as result are capable of carrying more weight. Those with smaller frames are not capable as much.

If the American government really cared about health and wellness, they would use tax dollars to do free evaluations of a persons health profile and then give them access to resources and information to help them manage that health profile. The problem is, no one ever seems to want to get serious about REAL HEALTH in this country. It's a joke.

Everyone, no matter what shit you've been told, if you want to be healthy focus on body fat percentage. Weight and BMI are crap. Ideal body fat percentage is different for men vs. women. Do your research. Also, regularly get blood work done. For diet, while you can start with a base diet for your metabolic profile. Everyone is different. What you do is you tweak your food intake and check the results over time to find one that works best for you based on the metrics you get from your OWN body. I was in serious peak physical shape at one point in time by doing precisely this. It's what professional and Olympic athletes do.

If you don't believe me, hire a reputable personal trainer to fact check me. Good luck!

By the way, in America, a lot of obesity problems are very exacerbated by sitting at desks in office jobs working too many hours. Not only that, it leads to tight muscles that atrophy.

  22. For many years the most important criteria for evaluating a police officer was "number of arrests". Women just didn't measure up, and performed poorly.

Perhaps the women realized that the "number of arrests" a police officer makes isn't necessarily directly correlated with reducing crime? I'm a male engineer who works with mostly male engineers and I can tell you that the reason is more likely to be because male engineers are more domineering. They're also a lot more irrational, opinionated and douchey. Heck I'll even admit I used to be like that until I stopped fighting some sort of code religious war about converting everyone over to my one style to rule them all when ever other person thinking like me had precisely the same idea. That dynamic leads to constant conflict, diminishes collaboration and ultimately doesn't do anything to deliver valuable software to the business.

I think the reason why geeks tend to fight this sort of social war in their circle is because the find out for the first time in some cases that they actually have a chance to "win" (really an illusion). Many of them were bullied in other social circles. It's all crap. Top to bottom. It takes awhile to realize it though.

I can't tell you the number of times I've seen the tabs vs. spaces religious war played out never with a positive outcome. There are a lot of engineers like Richard Hendricks in the world that would make tabs vs. spaces a deal breaker for sleeping with a hot girl.
