Don't worry about it. It doesn't matter unless you personally think it matters. Eventually the sun will go supernova and after that there will be the eventual heat death of the universe. No matter how you slice it, the human race and all its achievements will cease to be. So if you think it matters what your contribution to society is, don't sweat it. Just do you. There is no evidence for God. No evidence of an afterlife much less a hell. There won't be anyone to judge you because you played too many video games. Don't sweat it unless you personally want to.

  8. Well, this is a neat service to offer but it's not going to help America. The majority of blue collar jobs were shipped overseas. Is this a diversification strategy to get into more global markets? :P

  9. We live in such economic times with low income owing to stagnant wages (adjusted for inflation), inflation and expensive health care and what does the younger generation do in response to this? It does the math and picks Uber over the Ambulance because it's the economically practical thing to do to avoid being thrown out on the street. They also decide it's worth the additional risk to their lives from an economic perspective. At what point does America itself not recognize that we have serious social problems that we desperately need leadership for? Sadly, true leadership is nowhere to be found and in fact there has been little or no leadership for about 18 years now on growing problems. Sad sad sad. I just finished watching a series of videos by Edelman on the trust barometer data that they've been collecting for 18 years and yes ladies and gentleman, this year, 2018, we hit the lowest point since they started collecting the data. They have a lot of great ideas about how to address the problem and it all takes this basic form: Leadership needs to step up to the plate.

I seriously don't know why no one will acknowledge these problems. The data is very clear.

  10. Your claim is pure conjecture and anecdotal. The claim that ALL declines in children's fine motor skills are EXCLUSIVELY due to screen time is nonsense and in fact if you knew how you would have to support that claim to make it irrefutable, you would realize the burden is really large. It would be much easier to make a claim that more screen time is a contributing factor and then we can all debate on how much impact that is having on the problem but you're making the claim ALL of the problem is due to screen time which is you have any higher level educational background especially in logic and statistics, you would know this is HIGHLY unlikely. But if you want to make that somewhat extraordinary claim then burden is on you to present empirical data that supports this claim.

  11. This story seems like complete, made-up bullshit. It has:

    - Doctors and scientists making a claim that seems ridiculous on it's face

The part that's bullshit is: Children have less fine motor skills to grip a pencil compared to another time in history because ________. It must be, screen time! There is absolutely no logical connection between the problem and the cause.

  12. At 40, like me, you would have learned to use a pencil first. We had Atari, we had Nintendo, we had C64, but they weren't quite as prevalent as smart-phones and iPads, which are what my kids grow up on.

My kids have definitely had issue with pencils and scissors in their early years. Of course, they got over it. These tests are designed to identify developmental disorders, and one failing one test in a series does not a developmental disorder make.

We also played with legos and erector sets.

OMG, why? A computer can simulate any physical instrument, and then some more. Why go to the pains of *manually* producing sound?

You can actually do both. For example, using Garage Band on an iPad you can plug a MIDI keyboard into it with the right adapter. It's remarkably easier to play a keyed instrument, for example, using actual weighted keys as opposed to a touch screen. You can do it with a touch screen but it's a lot harder and it doesn't have a way to send how hard you play the keys for natural volume purposes. For electronica, techno, trance, etc. yeah I'd say inline with the Roland 808/909, it would make more sense to do it that way. But then again, we're talking about ways to develop motor skills and using the touch screen isn't going to help you with that.

The only thing I can think of is that we have company executives that think stretch goals/BHAGs and a lot of happy talk can make miracles happen. The more rational thing to do is admit your competitors do it way better than you can and focus your attention on something you can do well that will actually make a profit. But what do I know?...

While we may wish for determinism, it has been shown long before that it does not exist.Since it was shown that we can not accurately know both the position of a particle and its speed

This is just pure common sense sprinkled with a slight bit of meta physics. We know this is true for now because all methods of taking these measurements you describe involves "bumping" the particles in question thus changing their state. In order to truly know the state at some fixed time, we would need to plug into the back-end of the system from outside of it and to our knowledge this is impossible. From a software developer's perspective, this is akin to being able to write something directly from the system to the console log. It would require there to be a "command" to issue to the universe like: getPositionOfEntity(e) and part of the subroutine is writing the answer to some medium that humans can parse.

I do not believe you. I do not believe that it is "extraordinary"--it is quite typical in my work experience. I also do not believe that it is "unhealthy".

Nevertheless, I do believe that you are opposed to "talk about sex at work", and that you will distort the truth to help your political cause.

Extraordinary is quite a stretch but if people are treating the job environment like a frat house or a "hookup zone", it certainly distracts employees from the workplace's primary purpose: to make profits and with said profits provide you with the means to make a living.

  24. I'm almost hesitant to describe this because it makes me wonder if former co-workers of mine read this site and will know what environment I'm talking about. Frequently, one co-worker who was eventually promoted to be a Director would often loudly ask questions like "Does it make you gay if _______?" and what went in the blank was always quite inappropriate and sometimes quite disturbing. There were also frequently mentions of sex acts like like Dirty Sanchez and Hot Carl's. If you don't know what those are, DO NOT look them up unless you want to be grossed out. Management knew this type of behavior was common as did HR and yet they looked the other way. In fact it was a running joke "Don't tell HR". The best part of it all is that you were compelled to join in this sophomoric behavior lest you be ostracized from the group, overlooked for promotions, etc. Absolutely filthy. Sometimes I wonder if Idiocracy is truly upon us.
