Can we now finally come to the conclusion religion is not all bad?
Can we now acknowledge some people need belief to help them in hard times? Or just give them direction or purpose?
Can we agree belief is not easily swept aside?
Can we believe that maybe there is a greater power out there?
If we can hopefully those ****ers can understand to value human life? And not fight wars in the name of The One, The True or whatever name is "hip" now. All religions in their purest from teach human live is precious and needs to be respected. ****ing act like it.
Yes I'm looking at you Iran, Israel, Europe, US and every other god-damn place. Just agree to disagree already. there are much more important issues that need solving.
The main reason for future in increase in health care spending is not the uninsured. It is the ageing population. In coming decades a smaller workforce has to pay for everything. Spending will increase significantly. For some info see I.O.U USA.
However there is a way to combat this. A shift in attitude is needed and it won't be easy. Here is my two cents:
People in the US need to pay more taxes. Don't kill me yet, I will explain.
Ever since the Reagan era election slogans have revolved around cutting taxes. This has made paying tax a larger mental burden than it is in most other countries. As the US used to be the land of milk and honey everybody believed that the US should have all basic social commodities usually associated with a industrialized state. The feeling however was that this could be realized without footing the bill. Now it is abundantly clear that nobody picked up the check and instead a needlessly money draining system is in place.
Looking to other industrialized countries with lower or similar GDP spending on health care and a more comprehensive health care system, the difference is obvious. These countries have higher tax rates. In these countries the notion that if you want to enjoy certain benefits like (infrastructure, health care, pensions etc.) they have to be paid for. I'm not saying people like paying tax, but it is not such red flag in front of peoples eyes.
In addition to paying more taxes a major overhaul of the system is needed. The free market principle doesn't have a humanitarian earmark. For services as health care this is sorely needed. As most would agree it is insane if in the US people would die in the streets just because they couldn't afford health care. This does not constitute a wealthy industrialized nation which upholds basic human rights. No sense in preaching freedom as a basic right when other basic rights are neglected.
Enough ranting. For a more eloquent discussion look up some of Jeffrey Sachs's views on the subject.
Seriously instead of asking the slashdot crowd about career advice (brave). What do you want to do? Do you like your field of study? Do you think the CS master at your college is interesting? Worthwhile?
What i'm trying trying to say is this: Is your life about making money? More money than the idiot who spend two more years in college? If so good luck on your road to happiness. If not then you know the answer.
New forms of communication have always had an impact on the general population. This includes how their ideals, desires and preferences are shaped. So the political preference of people is subject to change according to the the times. New technologies which facilitate the rapid transfer of any kind of information is sure to have an impact. Does the the term populism ring a bell?
Now for the comments.
Democracy is not solely the first-past-the-post-model. There are many different ways of implementing a democracy. The term represents an idealistic approach to governing a country. the various ways it actually takes form are not represented under the definition democracy. So read up !!! I don't feel like giving a lecture.
Now for my personal preference. I don't particularly like democracy. But in this space and time it is certainly the best mainstream option we have. Furthermore I dare all the "hypocritics" to give a solution instead of bashing. And I don't want to see some technocratic/meritocratic solutions popup where distribution of primary good is equal/"everybody has to be rewarded depending their contribution". Because that is not feasible/ gives an option or describes an system of governing. Also a strong leader which has a firm grasp on the countries affairs and only has the best intentions. This does not constitute a system but an exceptional situation. Lastly any solution which in effect is a form of democracy will be tossed out as the comments suggest democracy is the root of all evil.
I call bullshit.
Have you even followed the trial. He used every stalling technique there is. He fired is his teams of lawyers and subsequently court appointed lawyers, he refused to recognise the court. Several former serbian army commanders testified against him. He was no where near walking out a free man. The Dutch news covered it extensively as the trial was held in The Hague. He shouldn't be modded up but down.
This movie gives an insight in the workings of the global monetary system and gives a reason for the current economic malaise. I'm not an expert on economic issues but at the very least it seems plausible and made me think.
It's a must-see for anyone thinking we as society can do better.
Everyone is absolutely right when they say this is a costly way of pumping gas. The fact is that it's not meant to be a new way for everyone to get their fuel. It's mostly for handicapped people who have a hard time getting in and out of their car. At least that is the way it was presented on the dutch news
I typed it up in half a minute and forgot the boiling of the wort (thanks for the word wasn't sure it was the same in English). I also didn't mention the cleaning and sterilizing part. I even forgot to include the formulas for the amount of the ingredients.
Sorry about that but the links everybody else gave seem good enough.
As for the extra work of grain brewing. It only costs you an hour and a half or so more. In my opinion worth it.
And again seek out a local brewer. They don't only make the best friends (a.k.a. free beer providing friends) but they can provide so much more info than all those links put together. It's still a craft. The brewer I went to even studied fermenting beer for his college graduation (some sort of agricultural college...). His brewery was frequented by lots of amateur homebrewers who just hung out (I'm talking geriatrics "I brewed my first 11% beer when your parents where still in diapers"). They also provide a wealth of information
I used to brew some beer myself and the home kit the guy is using makes for pisspoor beer. And also beer from plastic bottles!!! blasphemy
You want to be using real ingredients not the beersyrup this guy uses. Real barley and hops. Most small breweries also sell to individuals.
Heat the barley in a pan with sufficient water (as in how much beer you want) and look up a schematic for the heating. Essentially this means heating your mixture to a designated temperature and keeping it there for a period of time. Different temperatures make the barley release different sugars. there are different temperature schemes. Experiment with a few you can really see the difference.
Add half your hops at the beginning and the other half halfway trough the heating process
Then strain your beer a few times until it has the desired clarity (can be influenced by the type of barley)and cool the mixture down so the yeast survives when you add it. It is good practice to activate your yeast before adding
The beerbender does use a handy fermenting vat. These are actually quite cheap. Keep the beer for at least 1 week at around 24 degrees celsius
The botteling is next. If you like beer you surely have some glass beer bottles. Buy a bottlecapper and some caps. Again really cheap.
You can use sugar drops to get the CO2 in the bottle but about 2-4 grams of plain sugar also works. I like using some honey as it can be tasted later. But an absolute winner is the brown caster sugar
cap the bottles with the sugar and again wait for minimally 2 weeks at 24 degrees before consuming
this way you can vary your beer way more than using some kit. You can experiment with different barley, hops, heating schemes, yeasts, storing times, straining and sugars.
instead of banning sex offenders from the internet because it is the same as lurking at playgrounds, maybe parents should educate their kids about the dangers of the internet. Society becomes increasingly digital and this requires some education from the adults, not extended punishment for people who under the law paid for their transgressions. I was taught not to accept anything from strangers when I was little. I think the same applies here. The people in NJ are running away from their responsibilities as parents. What's next sex education using porn sites???
type of argument but it is categorically false to state that european immigrants came to the US with other dreams than the illegal (according to your post) predominantly mexican immigrants. People immigrate not because they think the american dream will make them rich but because the economical situation in their own country is sucks. These people don't hate their home country but can't see themselves making a living there.
As for the european immigrants learning english think again. Only immigrants who are isolated from their own group learn the language because they need it in everyday life. Any place where immigrants from the same country or speaking the same language group together you will find that less of them learn the native language as it isn't required for functioning in the public arena.
Not wanting to fit in is also false. The majority of illegal immigrants cut your lawn and pick up your trash. Jobs you can't be bothered with. They are not hardened criminals. They are trying. You shouldn't believe everything you hear on TV. Yes there are some bad elements and they shouldn't get any leniency but they shouldn't be punished harsher than the standing law proscribes.
Bash them all you want but my guess is you wouldn't learn to speak another language (what languages do you speak?) if it wasn't absolutely necessary. People are just like that.
How do you figure its always the left that resorts to violence? quite a claim you're making there. I won't deny that there are leftist groups who resort to violence, but there are also right wing groups which do the same. They are called extremists. They are on both sides of the scale.
As for the right to free speech. You should look up where it came from. It's a liberal principle. If it's from either side of the scale it would be more right than left.
Furthermore stating someone isn't allowed to speak because it doesn't fit in with your own views is politics 1 on 1
Anyone remember murder death kill or MDK. Now there's some demented acid trip gameplay which should be revived. Right up to the little helper dog and the crazed professor. Graphics today should able to make it playable without getting sick to your stomach.
Gimme some more parachutin' helmet sniper funhouse style action
In my opinion this entire discussion about free speech and hate speech is flawed. What exactly is hate speech?
I myself live in the Netherlands and have yet to come across laws that prevent someone from expressing their views. Nazi's are allowed to say whatever they wan't to a certain degree. They even have demonstrations if they want. The same applies for the majority of the countries in Europe. It's not like people are thrown in jail because they make remarks that are socially not accepted.
The point is that the laws that we have in the most in the EU are related to liberal principals. A good author to read in this regard is John Stuart Mill. He was an advocate of liberalism which is at the core of present day democracies especially the American democracy. In his essay "On Liberty" he outlines the basic principals of liberalism like freedom of speech. According to this essay it is okay to say whatever you want and society actually needs unpopular opinions to keep debate towards the right opinion going. There's just a little snag.
Freedom of speech is only allowed if it doesn't incite violence.
Hate-speech laws in the EU are not made to filter out the unpopular opinion. They are liberal laws which are to protect people from violence incited by a nutcase. Just last night I saw a documentary about some sect-leader who was working towards a second Waco. Advocating murder in name of the prophet. As usual especially the murder of afro-americans and jews. He had a huge complex stockpiled with weapons and loyal followers. Doesn't it give a clear message if society denounces such acts by judging such speeches. If this guy says kill his followers will do it and afterwards you'll have an entire country asking why this could've happend.
As for laws prohibiting denial of the holocaust those are founded not out of fascism but out of fear and to some extent shame. It doesn't help the identity of an entire people to have such a legacy form past generations. It's not strange that they overreact to it. I'm not saying that it's right but it's certainly understandable.
Took em long enough.
