You make it seem very easy, in reality the European academic community is very closed though and professorships are for life so the chance a place frees up for you is very very slim.
Especially in logics nobody in the EU will be waiting for you because that's one of the only things we're still quite good in.
Don't get your hopes up.
If you tried to inform yourself, you'd know that skype for linux exists, just another windows fan trying to bash linux. I have skype 2.0 running while i'm typing this, i'm an absolute newbie but even i got it installed.
You'd expect a little more knowledge from a selfdeclared IT professional.
My webcam runs just fine btw.
The Gimp does everything i need for photo editing, but i know it doesn't have the possibilities that photoshop has. When it comes to video editing i'm sure there is linux software out there that does what you need, i don't own a camera so you might want to use google, apparently not your strong point.
I don't know a lot about computers but am quite interested in them (that's why i read slashdot).
Two years ago i tried an ubuntu-only system and it was disaster, crashes all the time, controls i didn't understand and very little info to be found on the net for absolute beginners.
A few weeks ago i got a computer-savvy friend to install a dual boot system for me, i now have XP pro and Ubuntu, i have logged on to windows twice since then.
The ubuntu system does everything i want it to do, it's faster, all software is free, it's more userfriendly, there's no viruses and security problems etc... next time i have to wipe my HD it will be an ubuntu only system, for me windows is something of the past, i don't need it anymore.
The ubuntu forum is great for beginners and has a lot of easy info, whenever i've had a problem i found answers there. Also it feels great to work with a system that is developed for the users, not for profit.
I tried the Verizon security test and i think it is worthless.
It stated my last antispyware update was 27 days ago, in reality i updated yesterday.
It stated that the last complete scan i did with Avast antivirus was 271 days ago, last full scan was last week.
Basically all they want you to do is buy their security suite by giving you a false sense of insecurity, i don't understand why this bs is propagated on slashdot. Did the editors finally give in to corporate pressure? Is this some kind of product placement?
Thumbs down for this one.
Your links aren't working Sweeney, i get "Access denied for user 'parallel'@'server213-171-218-204.livedns.org.uk' (using password: YES)" when i click them.
What they should be doing is restoring democracy and remembering those who died for it instead of bringing toasts to thieves. Putin and his clique have caused the death of Anna Politkovskaya and many other journalists, that's what the FSB is up to now, i doubt those killers will be celebrated in 50 years.
Here in Belgium Scarlet telecom has recently lost a lawsuit issued by the belgian RIAA (SABAM). The judge has ruled that the ISP should ban P2P traffic, needless to say Scarlet has appealed against this bs decision. All other Belgian ISP's have received a letter treathening to sue them too if the don't cut off P2P traffic. I'm sorry for my poor knowledge of English and i am currently fortifying my house out of fear for the grammar nazi's.
My only Os is suse linux, and i am not a techie as such. i would like to see linux adopted by a larger community, but i don't see it happening any time soon.
The real question here is if ordinary endusers can be expected to understand how a product works in order to use it.
Linux is extremely userfriendly for (mostly nontech-hostile) geeks, but it isn't at all for people who don't know and don't care about how a computer works.
Should everyone be a car mechanic in order to drive a car? It would be a hell of a lot more convenient, but the thruth is most people just want to use a product, not develop it.
Untill linux developers grasp this concept of people not wanting to be linux developers, linux will remain at +- 1% marketshare no matter how much better it is.
The real problem is not about incompatibility or people not wanting to change OS, it is about techies who refuse to take endusers into account in their spare time, because of that attitude linux will remain the exception on an average desktop, not a broadly accepted OS like it should be.
Capcom Announces Unbuyable Game
The article is not paywalled, you just have to register to read it.
Most people on that list pay 125 dollars per month for their connection, internet access is extremely expensive in Belgium because of an ISP monopoly.

Foxmarks works fine for me.
