  1. Re:Usefulness? on Now You Can Use the Nook Touch ... As a Kindle · · Score: 3

It's highly useful. You get all the benefit of e-ink and the ability to buy books at any bookstore. This makes it better than an e-ink device that is locked to a single ebook provider. As for swapping over to the Nook Color, that's fine if someone wants an LCD screen, but some of us like the idea of having an open e-ink device.

"Simultaneous connection to a Wi-Fi Direct-certified group and an infrastructure network is an optional feature." From what I can tell, it more or less is a 1-on-1 (or 1-on-many depending on device's settings) automated AD Hoc (with pre-defined settings). Since connecting to both a Direct Connection and infrastructure network at the same time is optional, I assume it would have 2 WiFi devices installed to do this (if it only uses 1 device to do both I'd be surprised). As such, it's very similar to a laptop that has 2 WiFi units, 1 connecting to a local hub and the other running in AD Hoc mode. It sounds like WiFi Direct just simplifies it for the average person into a plug and play style. Nothing really new from a technology viewpoint, it's more a new standard to make implementation and certification of existing tech easier.

I own a PK20 pocket projector. It fits in the palm of my hand, does 800x600 native, and uses ultra-bright LEDs with DLP tech to handle the images. It gets 10,000 hours of lamp life but is fairly dim as a result. It is much brighter then the first gen, PK10, but it still gets washed out easily. In a lightly lit room, I can do a 40" image, and in pitch darkness(or almost black), I can project around 60-70" without issue. I'm curious how the brightness of the lasers will be. Will it be able to project a 5' image in a lit room, or will it need the lights fully dimmed? I also wonder what the viewing angle will be, will it be very narrow with a fast drop off to the sides (which would make it less then ideal for portable presentations). Does anyone have any actual specs on the unit?

I've used mobile versions of Opera, InternetExplorer, Minimo, and now Safari (and a few other off-brand browsers). Up until Safari, I found Opera to be the best for mobile browsing, but even it was lacking. The iPhone's Safari seems pretty good so far, still not perfect, but better then the rest. But with Safari, you're limited to using it only on the iPhone (or iPod touch). Hopefully this new development from Mozilla will offer a nice high quality mobile browser that is compatible with multiple devices. I'm looking forward to a browser war for the mobile market, its about time we got a choice of good quality browsers instead of being stuck with low grade versions that can't even render simple pages well.

Let the browsers wars start again.

  11. I don't think the phone is actually "unlocked" on Class-Action Lawsuit Over iPhone Locking? · · Score: 4, Interesting

I don't think the current unlocking of the iPhone is a legit unlock. The current unlock method reflashes the modem firmware(with a modified version) to allow it to use multiple carriers. On my old smartphone, the unlock software scanned my phone and then when I booted with a different SIM, I typed in an unlock code and the phone actually unlocked itself (the same as if my carrier had given me the unlock code). The modified modem firmware, while it creates the unlock effect, it isn't the same method AT&T would use to unlock the iPhone.

I think the unlock method will change over the next few months. In the US, Apple uses AT&T, in Germany, they use T-Mobile, ETC... When the hacking groups begin to compare the differences between the various regional iPhones, they'll find that there is a better way to unlock. I doubt future firmware updates will convert German iPhones to AT&T. So by examine the difference, we should get closer to having a real unlock and hopefully we'll be able to avoid issues with firmware updates as a result.

As an owner of an unlocked iPhone I think people are just acting stupid. I'm perfectly content to sit back and use the 1.0.2 firmware until a solution is found for the new firmware. Going around and blaming Apple is a waste of time. While I think Apple could've handled things better to prevent bricking of phones, it isn't truly bricked. It is possible to revert the system back to the older firmware if you know what you're doing. The problem is, a bunch of naive users are playing with their firmware and they don't have a clue as to what this means. I think most intelligent iPhone hackers understand that you can't upgrade firmware the day it's released and expect it to work right with previous mods. But I guess all this complaining shows that a lot of ignorant people are hacking their phones without understanding all the complications involved.

I was inferring that the sale in Japan could have been a similar discount and thus the results could be relevant. Of course, you are also right, they do love some formats that we hate. And now we've got cards that can pound the living hell out of DirectX 9 games. People have gotten spoiled with super high resolutions. It'll take a gen or two of graphics cards to really rock the DirectX 10 scene. It's nothing new, it happens every time. People need to stop making such a big deal about it. By 1970, the two scientists had determined the structure of paclitaxel.
