Their patent covers a phone-home architecutre that:
. detects the failure (via exception handling) . locates the source of the failure . -asks the user if they want to allow phone home- . phones home to a repository (if allowed) . looks up the failure in the repository to determine if there is any request for additional information to gather for that particular type of failure (or by particular application that failed) . gathers the requested additional information from the failed machine . transmits all the desired information to the repository. . searches the repository for any existing fix for the problem . transmitting the fix to the failed machine and applying it . if no preexisting instance of the failure exists, creating a new instance
further, the repository can be local or remote, as specified in a setting located on the client machine.
Gnome, and Gnome based, apps have been doing this when they crash for quite some time now. They offer the enduser the choice of submitting the PR for the crash (which can be either local, or remote, depending on installation configuration), or checking out the gnomeapp crash page (which, again, can be local or remote, depending on the config).
It's that easy to work around it. They're just protecting themselves from direct copycatting as a matter of routine.
I've often wondered just who Microsoft is copy-catting for this.....
Several analysts have ponted out that this coud mean milions of lost jobs in an important industry.
I take it your a telemarketer then? Important industry to whom? The other worthless sh*t's that call when my family is ready to sit down to dinner, or the one's that call, infallibly, 5 freakin minute's before we're ready to try and get the kids into bed?
Let them ALL burn in hell, let anyone who would have the brass balls to pick up a telephone and willfully call someone at what is now a known time that the most family member's are home, and attempt to sell some slimy, 'made in ' stamped piece of crap, or useless 'insurance' that you will a) never need, or b) the gods help you when you attempt to place a claim, end up at hell's gate with a demon hung bigger then the goatse.cx gent just drooling over the thought of 'getting a piece of new meat'.
Sorry, but thier livelyhood ENDS at my door, and yes, Virginia, that does include my phone.
While many of us don't like people selling us things we don't like but thats capiatalism you know.
Your right, it is capitalism. Part of capitalism is also 'Consumer Choice' and 'Free Markets'. I, as a 'CONSUMER', CHOOSE NOT to get these calls, and for the moneygrubbing telebastards, the 'FREE MARKET' has other, proven, way's of making money that aren't so obnoxious.
chrisd notes that his company is making SCO employees unhireable.
I'd complain about how immature the policy is except that if you read the page, you see that they are not hiring, so SCO employees are ineligible for all zero of the openings they have available.
read further... they're deleting anything either from, or related to SCO without even looking at it. not cool at all.
If Microsoft wanted to be relevant in the future, she told them, it had to adjust to NetGen, even if it meant producing software that the middle-aged guys in the room didn't care for.
In early 2001, she set up in the hip waterfront area of Seattle--miles away from the orthodoxy at Redmond--recruiting kids barely out of college, promising them the opportunity to make an immediate impact.
Is it me, or does the whole article feel five years out of date?
Well, it certainly make's me feel five years out of date
I have a permanent visual impairment and one of the worst things is websites that force a tiny font on you instead of respecting your browser's settings for what *you* need the fonts to be sized as.
Then why do you let the html dictate what font's/fontsize you see?
In the 3 major browsers, its easy:
Moz: Edit|Preferences|Appearance|Fonts - choose your font's and typesize, and uncheck "Allow documents to use other fonts"
IE: Tools|Internet Options|General Tab - Fonts Button: Set your Fonts and typesize here|Accessablity button: check the 2 "Ignore font..." box's, or you can supply your own style sheet
Opera: File|Preferences|Fonts: there are too many options that you can control here, upto and including using your own style sheet.
It's not difficult for the end-user to do, or to have it done for them by a helper.
the corporate/home MS windows user's really. Just about everyone else (that I can thing of(and no, IANAP [i am not a psychic:)])that's not using windows (and even some of the more clueful MS user's out there) are using gpg.
I'm saying you should recompense the networks for the shows you watch.
I already do. It's called a "Cable Bill".
You do want to pay your fair share for the shows you watch, don't you?
See above. IANAL, but the way I see it, it's not my problem that network television can't support itself. I pay my local cable carrier (AOL/TW) more than enough money each month for DCable (full of crap)/Premium channels (some good, some crap)/Roadrunner (slower by the day, yay!) to compensate them for me refusing to watch ad's on my television. And don't tell me that I'm just paying for infrastructure, it' supposedly included. Nor is there any mention in my contractual agreement/AUP/TOS w/ AOL/TW regarding my viewing habit's, or lack of them.
Is there a way to get around this for new hardware? Has anyone else encountered this?
Yes, there is. It's called a modified bios. There are plenty of site's out there that have access to modded bios's for various boards (Abit, Asus, SOYO, etc). Find one that allow's you to toggle the ACPI ON/OFF flag, or mod one yourself. Good places to start for AMD based stuff are:
Why in the world does XP need this feature disabled, and are there workarounds to get OSes like FreeBSD working properly with motherboards of this sort?
XP does not. Read above. I've got one Soyo Dragon Plus running OpenBSD without ACPI thanks to a modded bios, 1 Abit KG7 running Win2K without ACPI thanks to a modded BIOS, and a couple of AOpen i815 board's running without ACPI, One XP, one FreeBSD, thank's to MODDED bios's.
More importantly, most work computers don't have DVDs as standard
Umm, no. I just spent around 30k out of my IS budget to upgrade all of the workstation's at the office I administer. They all have DVD's in them (cheaper than the CDR/W's the manufacturer offered as an alternate, and I really don't want my end-user's getting into the habit burning cd's @ work).
and admins don't allow installation of unauthorised software.
Unauthorized software is easy to prevent. With M$, use NT/2000 and use global policy to prevent software installs, and make sure that the user is not part of either the local admin or local power user groups. With Unix/BSD, it's pretty much the same theory, just ensure that the user is not part of the wheel or root group (I would imagine that it's the same concept for linux, but I don't use it, so I don't really know).
(it's really important, I need it so I can play my audio CD?)
It's a corporation, it doesn't need to give a shit about "its role in the larger culture." Corporations are, literally, defined as organizations whose primary and over-riding purpose is to increase their financial power. If we want them to act differently, we have to change the definition.
True, but federal law also define's corporations as citizens.. ergo, they have a responsibility as a citizen with more ability than the normal "joe/jane average" to the society that bore them.
Are people bonding an external thermocouple onto their processors to measure heat? Or is there a software process to use the chip's thermocouple?
Dunno 'bout anyone else, but I use an external thermoprobe to measure my 'puter temps (CPU (see previous post), incoming air temp, outgoing air temp, northbridge temp, hdd0 temp).
but be careful with comparing CPU temps. Since the Athlons don't have an internal temperature diode, the reported temperature is heavily dependant on the motherboard. I strongly doubt that your CPU is actually 30 degrees cooler under equivalent conditions.
I beg to differ..:) My temp's come off of a DigiDoc 5. I modded the bottom of the 8045 to put a probe right next to, and touching, the die on my athlonC (1 Ghz @ 1.33 Ghz, 266fsb).
Can you be a pal and explain a few things about the PAL 8045 to me? I've been looking around for them but they're really hard to find. I finally found a store that carries them, but is out of stock. They mentioned, however, that the Alpha PAL 8045 is only a heatsink, and you buy the fan separately.
You betcha. Most Alpha PAL's are just the heatsink, you have to buy the fan separately (On older model's, the 60mm Delta Black Label is really popular, but having my 'puter sound like a 747 taking off was getting bit tiresome..:)
So, are the fans you buy for it just standard case fans? Do they get power off the power supply like a case fan, or do they attach to the CPU fan header on the motherboard?
I just found the best balance of CFM and noise that fit my requirements. Ended up finding a Sunon 80mm that was rated at 33db and about 40 CFM.
If they're just standard case fans, are there recommended fans to use with the unit? Are there big differences in the noise and airflow in 80mm case fans?
Yup. It's standard, but you can find fan's in all sorts of configurations. Tailed (with wire's attached) or not, 4 pin Molex, 3 pin connector (to go to the motherboard).
Hope this helps.
Plus, on average, the new fan keeps the processor an average of 4 degrees Celsius cooler - from 69 C to 65 C, when running full tilt - e.g. Baldur's Gate II:Throne of Bhaal, and my little contribution to Team Slashdot, that's the temp. Running with just the OS is about 58 C
Try replacing that PC&C pos with an Alpha PAL8045 and a quiet Sunon 80mm fan. I'm running an equivalant machine, and my MAX temp under full load is 34 degree's C. The only potential problem with the 8045 is will it fit on your board.

I'll care when the MPAA signature companies start to make making original films again, not rehashing stuff that's 20+ years old....

Thoughts/Comments?
>Technically, NT is a flavor of Unix...
> If anything, NT's indirect ancestor is VMS
Actually? NT's ancestor is IBM's OS/2 (No, sorry, I don't have a direct reference, but it can be googled.)
