Al Gore has done as much to Climate Change awareness as much as Richard Gere has to AIDS awareness in India! Al Gore's message is practically for idiots who have no idea about global warming. Even in that category, I think Discovery Channel, National Geographic etc seem to have done much more.
Even the IPCC is a joke. You get Nobel for publishing reports which every scientist already agrees? I thought IPCC was a farce put on by governments to keep on talking and not doing anything that actually matters.
Seriously. I'm not a loony devoid of friends. I regularly mail close to some 100 friends in any combination. But I don't think there is a single hotmail id in my address book. I use my hotmail id only to login to expedia.com. I simply cannot believe someone has more than 10 hotmail ids in his address book. What is all this ruckus about?
And btw, why do I have to type in average.joe@HOTMAIL.com when I'm already on the hotmail page?
Should not we be having the option to choose the Handset, carrier and the software (display, browser, yadda, yadda) already on our phones?!! Have the mobile players succeeded where Mac failed in the PC-market. (yeah ok, Apple has not failed but trying...)
I feel installing some KDE apps on a GNOME desktop gives me the best of both worlds. Probably its just me but I find KDE too buggy, messy and simply unusable! But I like many of the apps. In other words, I'm not ready to live in the garage simply b'cos I often come there to get some stuff done! I prefer the nice living room provided by GNOME and use the KDE garage whenever necessary!
Why do I get the feeling that most of the people who oppose GPLv3 are infact in the same league as pirates? Linus may indeed be unconcerned about legal issues and is happy with GPLv2. But most people who are trying to portray RMS as some lunatic are folks who probably have never contributed a single line of code. If you are developer, what do you have to lose by releasing it in v3 instead of v2? Are you not thinking about 'stealing' someone's non-GPLv3 code and using it in proprietary software? Come on, admit it. Honesty won't kill you. Believe me, using someone's code is not immoral as long as that developer doesn't object. If he/she does, then what you just did was piracy!
Why do we have to type in average.joe@hotmail.com to login when we are already at the hotmail url? What if there are msn users too? Can't the jackasses who coded this, take care of this trivial but annoying discomfort to the users? I use my hotmail id ONLY to login to sites that require a.net id.
oh, maybe not at the distro level but below. I mean more kernels, desktop envs, browsers. I know there are a lot of them too but the major distros aren't supporting them.
Exactly! I don't use Facebook much but I hang out on orkut once-a-while. Having more friends is neither helpful nor is anything wrong with it. I accept friend requests from even people to whom I may spoken just once long back. SN sites are just my active phonebook. I speak to my 'real' friends on the phone.
Is it legal for a public broadcaster to use DRM? If BBC cannot voluntarily accommodate Linux users, I can understand that. But trying to keep people out seems plain wrong. Aren't there laws in England to protect people against this sort of behavior from Public institutions? Or am I really missing something here?
Well, free to use is not that FREE in the FSF! The online services of Google and Yahoo, I guess are not free until they release it so and everyone is free to use the code as they please. Afterall even many of the services offered online by Microsoft are 'free' as in money.
yeah. China, India and now Thailand. do you really think Google is going to stand against any government? Infact they would be stupid if they do.
Having said that, I would really love to see Viacom ripping some money off Google. It'll be poetic justice for the atrocities Google is committing on Copyright/IP.
I'm from India and I cannot fathom why my poor fellow countrymen will need laptops. But thankfully the government is not that stupid. These research folks can go on talking and if something materializes its good. But don't let the 'Times of India' fool you into thinking that this $10 laptop is a national endeavor.
Indian sport minister recently remarked that expenditure on the Asian games was a terrible waste when it could be better spent on rural schemes. Some people claim that his remark led to India losing the Asian Games 2014 bid to South Korea. So atleast few people in India have their priorities correct.
And finally I'm disappointed that/. quotes from the 'Times of India' newspaper. TOI despite its long history is kind of a joke these days. Its now renowned for publishing useless news items.
Why should slashdot quote Economic times of all sources?! What Dayanidhi Maran, the Indian Telecom minister said was that he would abolish the practice of broadband service being charged a premium over and above the internet connection. It happens with every technology. You first offer something as a 'premium' service and once the competition hots up, every player will offer it as 'basic'. For the uninitiated, in India Broadband service costs something between $10 to $20 per month which is high by Indian standards.
I'm surprised at the comments which say that the blurring is not needed. We are not talking about the United States and Chinese spy satellites overlooking Indian establishments. We are talking about terrorists. When they plan attacks on key structures, should we be providing them detailed layout of these buildings, so that they can make maximum impact and escape easily? Without such help, they will have do this manually increasing the chances of them getting caught before the attack. In a country where the parliament, US consulates and universities have been attacked recently, blurring the images makes perfect sense.
If you ask me Google and Youtube are the worlds most lethal source of movie/video piracy. Every movie made in India reaches Google/Youtube within weeks. Ofcourse they reach Bittorrent etc as well. But the damage done by Google to Indian Movie/Music Industry is phenomenal. Hope a day comes when the authorities in India finally wake up and ban (yes BAN) Google Video/Youtube and other pirate repositories to get them to fall in line.
Despite the poor slashdot summary, the interesting info from the article was that this Indian state will give preference to FOSS companies. If Indian states adopt FOSS on a large scale, it will give enormous lift to the FOSS community worldwide. By adopt I mean using FOSS alone in all state institutions, funding FOSS projects especially in Indian languages and providing tax benefits etc to private enterprises which adopt FOSS. Will Kerala or any other Indian government go to that extent? They can start by making gov.in websites browser neutral.
Funny! I think 'white folks' are the most voluntary learners of languages! Learning a language when its not forced down your throat by the academia or the society is not so easy. Being a fellow Indian, I can converse in 6 languages. Of these, I learnt 3 in school and picked up 3 more from my neighbors. But after having spent 3 years in the US Southwest, I barely understand few words in Spanish.
Couldn't agree more with the article. GNU/Linux users should also try GNU/Hurd just for the heck of it. That would atleast help us understand 'Linux' alone is not FOSS.
For me the most important aspect of using free and open source software is the amount of CS knowledge we get without even realizing it! More options at the kernel, desktop and distro levels mean that you invariably learn more trying to choose from them! Imagine the millions of Computer Science graduates coming from countries like India who have never used a non-Windows OS let alone installing or contributing to FOSS. Several theory courses in OS may not equal one GNU/Linux installation!
Ofcourse non-technical people should not have to worry about these things. Hence popular GNU/Linux distros like Ubuntu/Fedora/SUSE which even non-techies can install are welcome.
yes really. why do we need 'KDE' as a desktop environment?
1. if you are a newbie and just need a windows replacement, use Gnome. only MacOS has better GUI than Gnome. 2. if you need some of the cool apps that are unfortunately part of 'KDE', you could as well use it from a Gnome Desktop. 3. if you a serious user worried about memory etc, use xfce or other light weight desktops. 4. if you are nerd, why do you need a desktop environment at all?
Why install a piece of crap when all you need is a bunch of cool apps?
India's Business Standard reports that the Indian Government is mulling the switch to ODF. Can't wait...

huh? really? keep the FUD machine running...
...is it like Jesus Christ, the founder of Christianity now?
Why? Why NYT had to include such a line in an otherwise decent article?
yes, I'm a professional troll...
