My biggest beef with public transportation is the seats are generally set up in pairs of two. I take up almost 1.5 of the seats, I'm not fat, they're just rather small... I need to literally turn my shoulders on a 45 degree angle if someone is to sit comfortably beside me, and I'm not really that large of a person.

Now, enter the obese person who is all sweaty from lumbering to the bus... who literally COULD take up both of the seats in a pair... who somehow doesn't realize they can't even fit a single ass cheek on the .5 of seat that is left, and then proceed to try to fit into that space, ramming me against the side of the bus with their sweaty fat folds. Not really productive when my cell phone in my pocket is buried under a wave of someone else's sweaty fat. 2 weeks ago, one guy did this who smelled so bad that when I got to work, my boss could smell the fat sweat off of me. Thank god I bring a change of clothes for working out, I just wore them instead.

I've been taking public transportation for years and ignorant fat people are my longest running complaint. If it was once or twice, I wouldn't care... but it's more like once a month. /rant

Ummm? I don't think it worked that well. I live in Ottawa, and in the past week I've almost been clipped by stupid drivers on cell phones three times. It'd be humorous, except it happens at least once a week. Throughout this summer, I've heard street racers a good 4-6 times, which I'll admit is lower than it used to be but it's still going on.

We have the laws, and some of them can be quite harsh, but they don't get enforced enough. It's like the no-smoking-within-9-meters (of a public entrance) law. It's there, it has penalties, quite harsh compared to the crime, but I've watched cops stop and light a cigarettes right beside the signs saying not to smoke there.

My bottom line: Harsh penalties can make people think twice about doing something dumb, but only if they're actually enforced. Of course, YMMV depending on what jurisdiction you live in.

After university, Helen worked as a printmaking technician, and print and drawing tutor. She then joined the army as a cartographic assistant and illustrator, learning desktop publishing in 'the deep end' of a busy graphics office. Helen designed and taught a community college Life Drawing course, and recently taught drawing and painting to a community group. She is the author of The Everything Guide to Drawing (Adams Media).

Gee, I should random articles found throughout the internet as blind truth more often! Of course, I personally can't be bothered to do in depth research on such a trivial thing anyways. At least not in response to some random on the internet.

I'll see your poorly researched link and raise you some personal anecdotal evidence: in my many many many hours of shooting pellet guns when I was younger, I tried shooting from any stance you can imagine and from either hand. I consistently hit the target slightly (the amount varies depending on the distance) to the side of where I was actually trying to aim with my non-dominant eye. My grouping was generally tight enough to make me think it's more than chance. When more than 75% of my shots stopped hitting the bulls eye area and instead focused roughly an inch to the side, I considered it as having an effect. Of course, I could adjust my aim and still hit the bulls eye, but the point still stands that I wasn't hitting what I was aiming at, I was just correcting for the skew.

Couldn't tell you with other sports though. I never really tried it with archery, as the bow I made was distinctly left handed. Also, I mostly threw knives right handed but I don't think the level of accuracy required was high enough for me to really make a judgement. My stint trying to bat right-handed in baseball didn't work out so well, as I had been batting left long enough that it felt too strange to switch. That about covers the sports and activities I participated in enough where any sort of aiming might be important/fine-grained enough to notice.

It might also have to do with your master eye. Just as you have a master hand, you actually focus more out of one eye, with the other providing mostly triangulation data (and of course extending your FOV, etc.). For MOST people, your master eye is the same as your master hand. There are some people who have opposites. There is a fairly simple test to determine which eye is your master, if you are curious google will explain how.

I'm personally right handed with a left master eye. When I'm doing anything that requires accuracy (such as baseball, archery/shooting, hockey, etc) I have to do it left handed or my accuracy suffers. In fact, before I even found this out certain things just felt "right" to do left handed.

My father (who happens to be almost deaf) has a unique approach to this that has seen good results through the years... He keeps a couple of CDs of music with him that are frankly just awful. When someone is being obnoxious with their music, he switches away from whatever he was normally listening to, takes his hearing aids out, selects the song(s) he think will cause the recipient the most auditory distress, and then cranks his music until his seat rattles... leaving it turned up until they're out of hearing range or they take the hint and lower their volume.

I wish I could contact him, he's drawn up a very amusing correlation between the type of music that the intended recipient is listening to and the music that will cause them the most distress. Oddly enough, it's not always the most diametrically opposed style that is the worst, sometimes it's a very similar style that is just badly done. Last I checked, his list included several songs from the backstreet boys, aqua, a couple of even shittier dance tracks, and several bad death metal bands (he takes the CDs I get from local metal shows and rips the worst sounding ones). There are others but I can't remember them.

I'll say two things in rebuttal. Firstly, while I agree that a lot of the raiding is as you say, there is also the PvP side to WoW... And there you can actually gain some recognition if you really care to. Secondly, wouldn't almost all video games fall into the broad category of "You do something that someone else scripted for you and get rewarded"? Even a generic FPS multiplayer is placing you in a group of people with no other directive than to kill the opposing team for the sole reason of winning. The need to kill all opposing team members is still scripted.

In fact, wouldn't almost every game fall into this category? Do something by the rules and be rewarded either by an advantage or the prestige of "winning" or otherwise?

  12. Re:I tried WoW this weekend on Review: Wrath of the Lich King · · Score: 1

Timing and tactics do play a large part. What you're calling group co-ordination I call tactics. I agree that aiming doesn't really play a part, it's just not part of the skill set of the game. As far as reflexes go, there are definitely reflex moments.

For example, when I'm tanking, I watch to see what spell the boss is casting... depending on what spell, I may hit my spell reflect. I don't want to reflect just any spell, as I can only reflect one spell every 10 seconds. I have to consciously decide that THIS is the spell I want to reflect (doing 4000+ damage to all party members) rather than the wimpy spell which does less than half that to one member. If the spell has a 1 second cast time, I have to be really on top of things to get the reflect off in time. This is on top of the regular tanking activities I have to maintain at the same time.

Also another point, while bosses still tend to be in set patterns, there are some elements of randomness being added in. For example, plucking a random encounter out of my head, there is a boss which randomly selects one party member and makes a beeline for them, owning everyone in the way (for those who play, the 3rd boss in Utgarde Pinnacle). Yes it's a scripted action, but there's no "safe" spot to stand, because you never know who he is going for or when. You just have to pay attention and scatter when you see him start spinning. I've seen him do it as many as three times a fight, or not at all.

As far as pvp, the reflex is definitely still in it. I'm guessing you see no reflex in it because you feel the cooldown limits your twitch ability. You could even say that the reflex switches to how quickly you can decide on an appropriate action and select it with accordance to the global cooldown timer... your WoW reaction time is really the time between your GCD being up and you pressing the next action.

An offhand comment to the no aim thing... I can assure you that it's actually a lot more difficult than you think. I always constantly dance around in PvP. Unless you use an ability which holds me in place, or get far enough away that I have no way to get to you before it goes off, I will constantly position myself at the last second so that the spell fizzles. I've been able to go through an entire fight frustrating an opponent because he's never able to get a spell off, because at the very last moment I'm all of a sudden behind him. Or on the flip side, kiting a melee class, staying just out of their range so they can't damage you while you continually own them. And, there are people who are WAY better at that than me.

And while a one on one PvP fight can end up feeling rather scripted, there are a very large amount of variables to be accounted for. The talent specialization of a character can really change how they play, meaning it changes how you have to react. Also, an actual good player will play on the standard reactions. (A rogue who will not pop cloak of shadows for example, will just continue to dps you down while you wait for that "scripted" action to occur.) ALSO (yeah I'm saying that a lot) if a fight is over in 10 seconds that's one thing... but if it lasts beyond the first 30 seconds, what do you do once all your cooldowns are used? If you've used your super power abilities and have to wait a couple of minutes before they're available again, how do you handle that? Many people can handle the scripted actions for the first 15-20 seconds.. but then fall apart if forced to fight beyond that.

Also, Blizzard has continually stated that they do not balance play for 1v1 pvp. So a lot of 1v1 turns into a complicated game of paper rock scissors... but as soon as you add in any other class, the combinations go up incredible. 2v1 is a totally different situation, 2v2 yet again. 1v1 combat does happen, but more often it's an indeterminate number of players and an indeterminate mixture of classes. Some classes also work together better. I've seen a good pair that worked will together (lock and spriest) take out 5 who didn't work as well togeth

Let me guess... by "traditional more difficult gaming skills" you mean twitch reaction FPS reflexes. If you don't, then I'm all ears waiting to hear your definition of difficult gaming skills.

Go read up on the boss strategy of say... Heroic Violet Hold or 10-man Naxxramas and then talk about how simple it is. Or better yet, if you can, find a friend that plays, borrow their account, and then watch how fast you get laughed out of the raid. After all, if it's that simple, shouldn't you be able to pick it up in a few minutes?

While WoW is a time sink and does allow a lot for the casual player, there is a fairly large niche for the higher end gamer.

Oh and as far as PvP goes, explain to me how a duel between two classes that can take upwards of two minutes, where positioning is important, using over 20 abilities each (that can't just be spammed, you need to react with those abilities) is simple? How is that any more simple than an FPS game where you have two (or maybe more) weapons with a simple point and click interface?

    A) Just because you can talk on a cell phone quietly, doesn't mean others will. Also, many mobile phones lack sidetone and because of this (and other reasons) many mobile phone users tend to speak louder than they would in person.

    B) Sure an attendant can ask someone to keep it down, but do you really think they will? How about two minutes later, or when the person on the other ends says something that excites them? How annoying would it be to have to sit next to the loudmouth while they are repeatedly told to stfu?

    C) Unless they make a real ass of themselves (and people like that probably don't need a cell phone to do it), do you really think the airline is going to go to all the trouble of having someone arrested or changing course over talking loudly on a cellphone?

While it would be nice to have the ability to make a call, the negatives seem to outweigh the positives, at least to me. Even with no technical barrier, I'd rather they keep cell phones turned off on planes. It's bad enough on the bus.
