>Google became the best search engine not by trying to get the cheapest talent, but by valueing employee's as PEOPLE, not as a COMMODITY.
Sorry, Google got to be the best search engine because it's the most effective algorithm, and it gave millions of people great search results. It got that way because a couple very talented guys had a very creative idea and implemented it extremely well.
This creativity and drive is what really drives an economy, and enables Google to hire a whole bunch of people and treat them like gold.
And before I get flamed, when I say MS apps are better than alternatives, I'm talking about standard desktop apps that Joe User knows about, not IIS, etc.
I've been using Open Office on Windows for a few weeks, and it's just fantastic.
I think too many people focus on Linux when they talk about open-source software, when the beauty of this software is that it's portable and usable on so many platforms. When I have to use Windows, I love to be able to use The Gimp and OpenOffice, since I'm not locked into proprietary formats.
Microsoft's monopoly exists in their applications, which have always been much better than the easily available alternatives, until now.
I was in 24th Company, one of the Brigade MISLO's, and a member of this band.
You should be able to figure it out from there.:-)
I still have a zip disk with the entire log site on it, maybe since Locklear's not there anymore (is he?) I should put it up on geocities for posterity. It's still pretty funny, and nothing ever changes at that place, so it's probably still relevant too.
Nah, actually I've actually only seen that issue in passing. I wasn't part of the Log staff that got canned for that, and even they didn't know who I was.
That gave them plausible deniability when the Dant questioned them a week after the online Log came out. It's the only way it could have worked.
I also don't have the Max 'em issue of the Log because the Dant explicity stated through the '00 MISLO's that if anything from that issue ever appeared on my web site he'd have Ward Hall block it. I didn't want that to happen, since a lot of mids enjoyed it.
This does the heart good to read all this stuff again. Hello to you fellow grads!
When I was a midshipman, I ran an online web site that wasn't particularly favorable to USNA. It took the Commandant a year to figure out it was me, but when he did, I was threatened with a Court Martial if I didn't hand the site over to him so that it could become a legimate "Log" again.
The reason it was against the rules for me to create such a site was that I was using the USNA network inappropriately. This of course, is a very broad rule and open to interpretation by the Commandant, and he interpreted in a way not favorable to my cause.
Also having been one of the two midshipmen responsible for the computer systems and their various uses, did not help my argument.
In any event, part of my job was to monitor the networks for mp3's and such, and we had to "crack down" a few times. It was always a slap on the wrist, especially when it was a group of midshipmen.
If I had to guess, the Academy leadership wants to stop this activity once and for all, and this is a good way to make the mids scared of being kicked out.
I was scared enough to give them back The Log, two days before graduation, when they gave me the choice.

IIRC the below site should still have the rules for the USNA network.
And I'm sure that they take all of the people like you into account when they set the prices for games.
Don't think they don't know about you and don't think that you're not raising the price for everybody else who does purchase things legitimately when you pirate.
I'm sorry, but even though the greenhouse effect is covered in elementary school science doesn't make it true that it's the cause of global warming.
So the sun gives us a tremendous amount of energy, but that doesn't mean a tremendous amount of that energy is trapped by greenhouse gases. The energy trapped by greenhouse gases is relatively small compared to ALL of the sun's energy, so let's compare apples to oranges here.
How can it be that the heat output of our machines is completely insignificant yet the pollution output is? I could argue that the carbon output of our machines is insignificant compared to volcanic eruptions and forest fires that we now prevent from spreading.
Doing back of the envelope calculations, you can see that a single 2.0 liter engine in one minute will have a significant effect on the temperature of the air around the vehicle. That's 2 liters of air per cycle of the engine being heated from about 65 or 70 degrees to at least 200 degrees exhaust temperature. That's not significant over time?
I stand corrected. Thank you sir!
Do these chips have fun in them? Or is that just Intel too?
Somebody had better give me a reason to buy one.
Imagine how fast THE INTERNET is gonna be now!
TWICE as fast, at least!
Yes, but it's better than being called *gasp* insensitive! :-)
I dunno, yer Mexicans 'ul do it real cheap.

I think that's pretty funny.
The reason data-entry jobs and the like are payed above minimum wage is simply because your typical McDonalds employee doesn't know how to do it.
Now that EVERYONE will know how to operate a computer, entry level computer salaries will fall accordingly.
And still, none of these kids knows where all the states are.
Sacrificing elementary education for the sake of job skills is a travesty.
Teach the kids math.
I was thinking that we'll have really fast semaphore flags next.
The problem is really tired arms.
Slashdot needs a new kind of mod point:
+1 Unintentionally hilarious
There's a bigger flaw than that. Let's say I don't aim my microwave at your mirror.

That would never fly today. Now the female characters have to be sexy AND smart to show the men how dumb they all are.
5 hour long movie? I doubt it. I don't think it takes that long to read a Crichton book.
Must be the "Romance Novel" font they use to print them.
Well, you can get a Mac...
And I believe I've heard mention on this site of some alternative Operating Systems to Windows. I'll try to find the link to that article.
Can somebody help me out here? What's the origin of the Soviet Russia joke?
Because Sun is limiting their customer base by excluding an OS that people want.
People who love OpenBSD won't be buying the new Sun hardware to run it on.
It's doesn't seem like a smart business move, or smart for public relations either.
It doesn't really matter how long Linux is supported when talking about cost. Upgrades are free.
Microsoft upgrades come at a huge cost, so if I have to upgrade MS products every five years, there's that initial cost, *again*.
Gee, there's not a whole lot to comment on. Oh well, I'll give it my best shot.
These Apache guys code up a web server that's much better than Microsoft's IIS, by far, whew!
And they're a lot smarter than George Bush. Zing!
Heck, most posters hear can't get it write.
And there supposed to be using they're brains.
