It is a shame that K-Meleon doesn't get more love. It was around before Firefox when the Mozilla suite was all there was. It does run really well on old computers. In our office we have 266mhz computers that they somehow thought it would be a good idea to put XP on. Both IE and Firefox take forever to load but K-Meleon is quite fast.

That being said, it is almost too stripped down and I've switched to using Opera on the office computer (actually Ive switched to not using the office computer whenever possible since it is so slow...).

I've never been to Ceasars Indiana but I did work for another Indiana casino for about 2 and a half years. As I was leaving we were in the process of switching machines from coins to bar coded pieces of paper that you would get when you "cashed out" of one machine and could put in another machine.

If Caesars has these then it is possible someone put in some of the bar codes and didn't notice how much money was on them.

It is also common for people to put a ten or twenty (or even hundred) dollar bill in the machine. If that was the case, some machines will display cents so perhaps the person mistook 10 for 1.00 or something.

Working at the casino I've seen some incredibly dumb people. I would not be surprised if half of them knew exactly what they were doing and the other half never even noticed.

As a former employee of a casino in Indiana (but not the one in question and not in the slot department) I can say that everything in the casino is written down and kept track of. I have seen casino tech work on machines and they routinely test them. I can only assume that what happen is that the slot tech screwed something up and they didn't test it before they let people play on the machine again.

That being said, $500,000 is less than half of what the casino I worked in made in profit per day. There's no doubt that at least some of the people who got that money just put it back in the machines anyway so I doubt they are missing much.

The state is going to step in asking why this was allowed to happen and whose fault it was. Someone will probably get transfered to a different department where they won't be allowed to screw up the machines again.

Regardless, I quite agree, if only the trademarks on Snow White and Cinderella and Sherlock Holmes weren't expired and the characters weren't all in the public domain there would be lots of films featuring those characters.

I've talked to a couple of fellow academics who are into "serious games" and using games to teach and while they are nice people and I wish them the best I just don't see the need for it.

While people learn things differently I can't help but feel that this is similar to trying to put a square peg in a round hole. Can a game be made that is fun and educational? Sure but I'm just not sure that making it would be an effective use of time.

Isn't that one of the purposes of a library?

Most people that work at a college library are college kids who are getting paid minimum wage. Our library has turned the first floor into a huge computer lab that is open 24-7. While it can be fairly empty at the start of the semester, during the last month of school it is packed 24-7. Holding LAN parties does seem a little silly unless you are just trying to get people to come to the library (I've seen fliers that one of the campus church groups was holding a Halo party, obviously trying to get people to come and join their group) but being open 24-7 would be great. It doesn't have to be full staff, but a couple people at the desk and some at the tech support desk (they already do that. They aren't library employees anyway but work for the campus computing services) would be a good thing in my opinion.

I've little doubt that this is a paper that was written for a class and not for publication. It is quite shallow and is at the level that I would see my undergraduate students turn in.

However, I have to disagree with your use of the term "class." I can't speak for the author but typically when academics use the term class they mean social class and not economic class. The two are generally not synonymous. Economic class has to do with how much money someone earns. This seems to be the definition of class that you are assuming. However, social class does not directly equate to how much money someone has. Therefore, "freaks and geeks" are typically seen as lower social class than "jocks" regardless of how much money they or their parents make. Therefore, in this case your criticisms that there is no evidences that, "Facebook has provided a higher earning and networking potential for uses to validate the claim that they are from a higher social class" is not what I think the author is trying to say. I think, and I may be wrong as I only skimmed the article, the paper is trying to say that is nothing about earning potential and not that facebook provides anything but that those who already have higher social class are more likely to use facebook than myspace.

But, again, I'm not really defending the quality of the paper as it doesn't do much more than point out something. If I were writing it this might be the introduction or even the abstract of a larger article that would go on to include more of a "so what?" and more direct evidence for the assertions.

  24. Re:Interesting way of looking at it, but wrong.. on American Class Divisions Through Facebook and MySpace · · Score: 1

Part of the problem is that "class" as a term can refer to numerous things. Social class and economic class are not the same thing. Your examples illustrate that quite well. Economic class has to do with how much money someone possesses (although some may argue with that simplistic definition) and social class is more performative. Social class relates to what the article says about "anti-capitalist college friends who work in cafes and read Engels."

However, all of these are broad generalizations. There is no way to put everything a person does into one category. However, categories are not the same as the way that the author of the paper and other scholars tend to use "class." Race and sex would not be what I or most other people I know would call "classes."
