Yep... you missed last week when it was announced that Japan was "building a base on the moon"(actually, the Japanese government was merely stating that a base on the moon was feasible before 2020 or so). Countless Slashdotters were screaming about how behind the US was from Japan (I guess our government hadn't gotten around to announcing that it would be feasible to build a base on the moon before 2020, making our government inferior).
How many 3d FPS games do we need? All games seem to be the same now, they are all 3d, more effort is put into smoothing out textures than actual gameplay. I haven't played a worthwhile game since Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri (a game I still play).
So ID releases the same old boring game time and time again with prettier eye candy and complains about piracy? Doom was like the most pirated game of all time and they did just fine off of it. This is like the music industry blaming piracy for poor sales when it's the fact that, maybe, music just sucks now?
We need somebody to do something different. EA killed the games industry, all games are now idiotic, all graphics and no gameplay, they appeal to our worst nature and they are all clones.
What is cyberpunk? Of course I've heard the word before but it seems like it's another internet word where a new definition is applied to it every 3 seconds. I always thought it was a genre of science fiction. Nope, apparently it now means "access to cheap computing power". Maybe tomorrow it will mean "cognitive dissonance". "Dude I'm studying Hegel's theory of cyberpunk in psychology right now!" Maybe cyberpunk will become a verb... "I totally cyberpunked his @ss! LOLOLOLOLOL!!!!". "Dude I am so cyberpunked today".
They should create a random cyberpunk definition generator somewhere...
Eh? Where does it compare OSS penetration in Europe and the US? Did you even read the article. I'm sorry but your post was karma whoring, nothing more.
There was a president (I forget who) who served in the senate for many years after his term in the Oval Office was over. Not in the past 50 years, and the 2 term limit only goes back to 1950 or whatever.
For one thing, the first moon landings weren't the last. Second, the benefits of a moonbase are a tad dubious. Third, the Japanese are merely drawing up plans to build a moonbase. I seem to recall Bush being ridiculed for calling for a trip to Mars a while back... so don't blame this on the ignorant Bible Belters (as per usual).
1st, 2nd, and 3rd world designations come from the Cold War. 1st world being Nato Countries, 2nd being warsaw pact countries, and 3rd world being everything else.
What do you do for people who are, apparently, not able to understand a simple ballot? The losers will invent some new reason they lost, rather than their guy getting the least amount of votes.
A formerly despised and hated company actually ends up doing new neat stuff, whilst a new protaganist takes over, formerly loved as an underdog, treats everyone like crap and becomes hated.
I never said that computers were. And yes sometimes simpler is better, except in this case where Florida Democrat voters could not decifer a simple ballot.
You've apparently forgotten, conveniently like many on Slashdot, that paper ballots (the butterfly ballots, hanging chads) was what led to "reform" our voting system in the first place. People have short memories on this site, unfortunately.
American urbanization patterns are generally more decentralized than even Canada, I remember seeing a statistic which showed that Americans live much farther away from city centers. And also, the urbanization rate for Canada and the US is about the same. Finally, the reason for the relatively slow pickup of broadband internet is the same as the reason for relatively slow cell phone pickup in the US... we already had a high amount of usage of earlier technologies. Before cell phones where ubiquitous in other countries, the US had close to the highest percentage of the population with existing telephone connections, so folks didn't see any need to use cellphones. Same thing with internet, the US has a large portion of it's population using dialup who didn't see the need to use broadband, and dialup is fairly satisfactory for some people.

That's a tad melodramatic don't you think?

that the US faked the moon landings! :)
AMD needs competition just as Intel does. More competition = good.

a non biased headline? I mean at least give it a shot? Maybe once in a while?
Yeah but clearly "use paper ballots" isn't sufficient... but that is what many of the replies amount to, unfortunately.
What do you do for people who are, apparently, not able to understand a simple ballot? The losers will invent some new reason they lost, rather than their guy getting the least amount of votes.
C'mon, this is what got us into trouble last time. Remember hanging chads and butterfly ballots?
If you pay more and subscribe, you get more services! It's criminal! ;)

Remember that "paper ballots" is what led us to reform our voting system in the first place!

You guys aren't exactly known for playing well with other countries.
Maybe, but the author's editorializing is unprofessional, unjournalistic, and a good reason to not take the Register seriously (not that I ever have).

Compared to Youtube, which I'd guess has much more bandwidth and storage load, myspace has tons of problems like this. What's the problem?
It's part of the BS corporate lexicon, like "leveraging" and "paradigm". "Ecology" is a new, but just as annoying, term though.
A computer is like a series of pipes! ;)
It's a goddamn website, Jim, not the Everglades!
