  1. Homeschooling is the best on Schooling, Homeschooling, and Now, "Unschooling" · · Score: 1

Unschool, unsmool. Schooling is a continuous part of life, not some sit in a box and be taught at thing. We've homeschooled all of our kids. They are doing college level work. They had already mastered all the pre-collage stuff by 12. Traditional schooling is designed to turn out good workers, square pegs to fit in square holes, and wastes a tremendous amount of time doing so.

  2. 1984 Redux on Crime Expert Backs Call For "License To Compute" · · Score: 1

  4. Beware of Ice Age on Global Warming To Be Put On Trial? · · Score: 1

Global Warming is no big deal. An ice age would be far, far more disastrous. Realty check: the temperature of the planet has gone up and down repeatedly. History will repeat itself. That's natural.

  5. Makes sense on 88% of Electronics Exports Reused, Not Dumped · · Score: 1

In our family we recycle computers. When a new one gets bought the computer it replaced gets passed down. Older machines are still goldies with years or even decades of life still left in them. Of course, there is always the Macquarium solution at the end of the line... :)

  6. I have one... on The Homemade Hard Disk Destroyer · · Score: 1

Highly advanced technology from an alien culture left to my by my distant ancestors. It's called a hammer. But wait, there are better things to do with a defunct hard drive. Open it up for crimminy sake. It is full of super magnets and all sorts of other fun. In the process you'll destroy it and have a lot more fun.

  7. Bad article on 10 Worst Evolutionary Designs · · Score: 1

That article was an excellent example of a lack of understanding of biology and evolution. Too bad it got any press.

  8. You're fine on The Ethics of Selling GPLed Software For the iPhone · · Score: 1

What you've done is fine. Releasing the source code, especially keeping it up as you add to it, makes it fine. Even with free beer someone has to wash the glasses.

  10. Good on Student Suing Amazon For Book Deletions · · Score: 1

Good. I hope Amazon loses. They should be ashamed of playing the role of Big Brother.

  11. Viva la Blender! on How Wolfram Alpha's Copyright Claims Could Change Software · · Score: 1

Once again demonstrating why we must destroy the malignant patent, trademark and copyright system which has grown like a cancer to stifle creativity in our societies. Viva la Blender! The ultimate revolution. Just Press Puree! -WJ

  13. Bang on. on Funds Dwindle To Dismantle Old Nuclear Plants · · Score: 1

We've seen this in Vermont. The plant owners under funded the dismantling fund, invested it in high risk investments and lost even more. I doubt they'll ever pay for it. Instead tax payers will be left to foot the bill, even though we didn't benefit from the electricity where I am. Gee. Thanks.

  14. So what. on Inside the AP's Plan To Security-Wrap Its News Content · · Score: 1

In real news the consumer's don't even care or notice. AP, having hidden their news, goes unnoticed.

  15. Rotten Patent System on Company Awarded "The Patent For Podcasting" · · Score: 2, Insightful

This emphasizes just how rotten to the core is our patent system. Software patents are asinine. Patents on life are even worse. The whole system should be dumped.

  20. Pastured Is Better on Cows That Burp Less Methane to Be Bred · · Score: 1

Pastured livestock don't burp and toot as much methane. In any case it is not actually as significant as some people are saying. The numbers are being distorted and exaggerated for political purposes. Still, buy locally pastured meat. It's a better choice and uses resources, pasture land, that you can't eat rather than grain.

  21. So don't buy Panasonic on Panasonic Begins To Lock Out 3d-Party Camera Batteries · · Score: 1

X Panasonic off the list of possible cameras. They're just trying to force consumers to fill their greedy pockets. Some camera makers have done this with memory cards too. I won't buy.

  22. Sad on Ray Bradbury Loves Libraries, Hates the Internet · · Score: 1

Sad. He is confusing the medium with the message. Libraries don't matter. They are elitist collections that restrict access. Putting his books on the Internet would make it so that more people could access them. People who like himself couldn't afford to go to college. I live in a rural area. We farm. I can't waste time going to the city to the library for books. College is a waste of time. I can get the info online. Libraries are old tech and just a tool, not content. Bradbury is lost in the past. Too bad. So sad.

  23. This article is hype on Lies, Damn Lies, and Battery-Life Statistics · · Score: 1

So? My processor is running at 12%, my screen is dimmed to 40%, that's normal. I got longer than advertised battery time for years. (My battery is now old so not surprisingly it is getting less time per charge.) If I want to do hard work I plug in to wall power but if I'm running off battery I'm thankful that the machine tones down it's power consumption. That's good power management. Frankly, this was a whiny say-nothing article.

  24. Grinding up the roads - Good Idea! on US Plans To Bulldoze 50 Shrinking Cities · · Score: 0, Redundant

Grinding up paved roads is a very good idea, and not just for gravel. The paved roads are horribly expensive to keep up. When they go bad from the frost heaves every year the cost of fixing them is far more than for maintaining a dirt road. A dirt road can be easily graded and ditched. It is easy to add more culverts to control water on a dirt road. Resurfacing a dirt road is cheap. All of this is far more expensive and time consuming to do on a tarred road. Yes, on highly travelled roads and city streets, the paving makes sense. But not out here in the rural areas. Just slow down and enjoy the view.
