He, and others, are simply hacking the economic structure. They insert an extra NOP to better the timing, they tweak their routines. Is it any surprise? Finance is a game, with a huge set of rules, and a very bugger compiler (see if you get my anology). They are not being evil, they are playing the game. As others have pointed out, this is no fault of Microsoft that they are good at it.
What Microsoft is scared of (and should be I guess) is that if you open up the source, their products will loose sales. It will be even easier to steal their features, or simply steal the whole thing.
If there were no piracy, and no one wanting to steal other peoples work, Microsoft could open up their source totally. This is not the case.
I would love for Microsoft to open up at least the most vital pieces of software (those that will help me develop and debug applications for windows), but preferable the whole thing.
So what you need to do is to give Microsoft a case where they can profit from having open source. I would say that they could profit in terms of users finding their bugs, and giving them solutions (as long as they have an organization who can do this, i.e. get the information from the users/developers into Microsoft and support them) back. They have problems with speed, stability, and security. This could be a reason to carefully open the source to give more real world testing.
The other reason would be to help developers build better applications for windows.
Other than that, why would they? If you have more good reasons, tell them;) But remember that it must be a gain to them, simply giving their work away won't cut it.
(They could always hire me, and I could show them good ways of open up their sources to the public. I am actually serious here. Gimme a job.)
My math skills are far from what they used to be, but something divided by the same thing becomes one. Hence Gnu/Gnu = 1, so it should be 1 Hurd. And who cares about that 1 anyways? So it's should be Hurd.
* Common package format (so you only have to create one package if you distribute linux software outside of the distros) * Core services (kernel, shells, etc) * Common bug DB for base distro * Standard on versions, paths, etc * Standard packages (KDE, gn0m3, etc) * Online help
Branded distro:
* Brands GUI environment of choice (for example Caldera KDE theme) * Adds value (package management, office packages, browsers, etc) * Packages, builds, support, etc * Tailors for certain products (laptops, Compaq Servers, etc) * Tests (and keeps logs on the tests) ---
This way the core of each distro is the same (just like now, just without the minor incompatabilites that screws users over, and without doubling effort needlessly. Each distro gets more than before), yet they can all stand out like the day today. One might go KDE all the day and opimize the system for that, another might go for general purpuse, a third just for IBM/Compaq/etc servers, and a fourth might make the Linux Laptop Distro. Heck, some might go for several of them.
Now I am sure a bunch of you will scream about freedom and how generally evil I am. But hopefully the others will see my point, think about it, tell me parts I'm wrong about, and add other good stuff. If you are of the second category, please post.
(Disclaimer: I use XP as desktop OS, but I've used linux for many years, and use it on a daily basis, just not on my desktop.)
I like bundling, I like integration, I like a package that is tested and I hope that there will be more high quality bundling in the software world (not throwing in two worthless games with a GFX card, but useful software from the start).
And so it begins, the road to hell is paved with good intentions.
I can't blame RedHat, they are in this for the business, you can't give away everything if you are going to make a profit.
But I can't say that I like these kinds of patents, the are not good for a free market, for healthy competition, nor for non-profit software or the users.
I can see how many are afraid of the deeds of organizations such as the KGB, GRU, Gestapo, Stazi, and FBI/CIA. This gives a fear of any form av compulsory identification, and a misstrust of the goverment agencies for law enforcement.
The problem here is that system is rotten, and with presidents who are obviously lying their pants off (pun very much intended) constantly, these FBI agents probably didn't feel bad about doing these deeds.
So off course we are afraid of the information collected, since it not only can, but apparently will be used against us. That is the problem, that the information that is supposed to protect us, is used against us.
I don't have a clue on how to fix a system this corrupt, with indivudauals this ruthless. The only advice I can give you all is to not act like these peoples and be a good role model for your friends and family.
Hate M$ all you want, but all these anti-trust crap is bad for the business as a whole, it states "if someone is big, we can cash in by suing them for whatever comes along".
It should be the business of the goverment to deal with bad business practises, not a personal vendetta powered by other companies (splitting up windows is just a bad deal for the consumers, imagine paying for all the parts of your car and then assemble it yourself...), especially not via states.
It's a market economy, make products that won't sell and you loose, just like this "alternative" DNS scam (isn't AOL doing the exact some crap?). Give companies a good chance to succeed with good products instead of pointing fingers like kids in a sandbox.
I would never pay for internet access like I pay for phonelines (or mobile for that matter). I want a flat rate, no bandwidth limits (give me what I paid for), and an IP of my own.
That said, I understand the costs involved, and because of that I am willing to pay a realistic price for a good service. I know what I get, and I know what I will pay for it. No surprises because some piece of software has gone wrong, or I installed linux a few times that month.
So, as the subject says, I see an opportunity here, an opportunity for the geeks down under to show how things should be done (don't forget to get an economics geek in with you). Start a company, and win the customers by being more reliable, having nicer and better service, and so on.
Since you won't break any copyright laws, or you can find it as mp3s. I will tell you who will, anyone you can't sing, is drunk, and is forced by so called friends to perform an act of karaoke!
I won't buy a harddisk where I am not in 100% control of what is on there, no way no how. I will never allow a company to buy it, as it more than likely will affect the business negativily (not being able to make proper backups, harddisks refusing to copy files, compiles going down the drain, servers fucking up).
The day I notice that I have bought a CD that I can't play in my computer or portable CD player I will go back and raise hell, I will refuse to ever buy that crap.
Why oh why do they have to punish people who want to buy quality versions of CDs/DVDs etc. Give me great quality and great price and I will buy, make me WANT to buy your products, give me a reason. Bullying me will piss me off. Ladies and gentlemen, I suggest you get pissed too.
Not to be overly negative, but my 8210 is very far from a brick, nor clumsy. It's really nice and small, and didn't look and sound like a toy (like the few motorolas I've used). In Europe you hardly see Motorolas, and the last time I visited the states (Januray/February this year) I didn't find any of the latest models from Nokia nor Ericsson there.
Estetically pleasing is hard to measure, but look at which phones sell the best and you get an idea of who made the right decision.
Even more reason to smack som sense into the whole software business. There need to be a "best before" date on these kinds of things. If nothing else so that it's not so dangerous to invest in software from non big companies.
I can't say that I am one of those big fighters for open source, though I must say coding your own software is easier if you have the code for certain parts of the OS (depending on what you do, different parts are relevant). In fact, I really hate it when I can't get to know what that OnPaint() really does when I want to inherit a GUI control.
But onto my read message. Where does the source go when the OS are killed? I persume it will go into hiding, never to be found again, which really is a shame. There is one thing when a company tries to sell a product, but when they stop doing so, it's only fair to their customers that they release the source. It more than likely won't have any impact on the OpenSource movement, but to some it might be very very important indeed.
Enforcing completely moronic ideas on a people by draconian means sounds like both these guys and the Taliban. Also reminds me of Ashcroft forcing ppl to morning prayers.
I am happy the US removed the taliban from power, now it's time you remove your "talibans" from the US.
OBS, I am not bashing the US for the sake of doing it. I've been there several times, I want to move there, but this kind of shit isn't helping anyone.
I don't drink and post, I get seriously pissed, tired, and then posts... and always regrets it the day after *laughs*
PS Don't post anonymously for these kinds of things, it was a good reply.

Ever seen one of those wireless phones you have at home? So you can run around the house while speaking in it. Got any idea how strong that signal is? How often it transmits signals?
Or what about wireless ethernet for that matter...
We need science, and we need to know what is dangerous and what is not. But these reports, or the reports about the dangers of potato chips, is not especially valid yet. I belive that two independant studies has to be made before you can draw any conclusion, and both of them has to live up to certain scientific standards.
Say what you will about this case, and say what you will about the companies involved, but this happens fairly often. I know very well that a post on slashdot won't change anything, at least not much, but is there anyone who seriously is trying to fight these kinds of software patents?
I belive that if you put millions of dollars into a product, you want it to sell, and not be pirated or ripped off. Because of this I don't belive in removing patents all together, but I belive that they should only be used to protect, not to destroy. In the software field, they destroy, and they last way too long. Put the time down to two years instead of something.
Hmm, I rant too much, maybe I should patent that and sue you all ^_~
Exactly. What kind of crap are they trying to pull? This sounds like some kind of Taliban influenced thinking. Most people I know switch channels when there are commercials on, everyone hates them and irritated by them. They love getting the shows on VCD because they can watch it when they want and without commercials.
Stopping PVRs is stupid and should be ignored by everyone.
Nobody might ever read this, but I thought that I should write something anyways. I wrote the original post, and I must say I agree with gosand in every possible way here. He brings up a very real problem, which I have also witnessed myself.
I belive both what I wrote and what gosand wrote is true, and complements each other. First the employers has to find workers that are not lazy no good morons, and then they have to treat the good people well. It's a big problem, it has to do with management, people skills, psycology, the decay of society, morals, and trust.
That's it. I hope all you guys out there who is honest and hard working one day can end up working together, we deserve each other as friends, and we honestly deserve the $$$.
He, and others, are simply hacking the economic structure. They insert an extra NOP to better the timing, they tweak their routines. Is it any surprise? Ok, I'm dumb. So reply me ^_~
Pirated cheaper EVD/AVDs being sold around the world, making the movie industry see even more red than before.
If I were the guys who own DVD (Phillips and friends), I would demand that the fee is paid in the store, when someone buys the player.
This doesn't sound like a step towards a better movie format for everyone, this sounds like VHS/Betamax all over again.
I could be wrong though;) We'll just have to see what happens.
Exactly my point! I look at it like his:
"Base" distro does this (among other things):
* Common package format (so you only have to create one package if you distribute linux software outside of the distros)
* Core services (kernel, shells, etc)
* Common bug DB for base distro
* Standard on versions, paths, etc
* Standard packages (KDE, gn0m3, etc)
* Online help
Branded distro:
* Brands GUI environment of choice (for example Caldera KDE theme)
* Adds value (package management, office packages, browsers, etc)

Put that on a huge sign and you will keep the linux geeks out of the way (except the terrorist ones ^_^ But that will take of itself ^_^).

Kid: Yeah yeah, here's a cool hundred, I want , can you get it?
Me: Sure thing dude
Or they will do what many kinds do (have I heard ^_~), steal it from their parents. Ehm, I mean get an illegal copy on the internet.

IT workers are a valueable asset, don't forget that.
