I'm glad to see that Loki is taking a large risk and porting these games to a Linux platform. I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess a lot of Slashdot readers will heap kudos and praise on Loki for doing this, and many of these people will urge others to "support Linux and buy these games."
But I'm kind of wondering how many of these people will actually buy the Linux version of these games? It seems like everyone wants someone else to buy the games. Even though I really want to see Linux succeed as a gaming platform, I seriously doubt I'll buy either of these. Usually if I want to play a game, I'll hop on my Windows box. In my experience, its been much easier to get something to work on my Windows box than on a Linux box.
I know that Linux is in a Catch 22 where games won't succeed until people buy them, but no one will buy them until lots of games come out. I wish I could say that I would buy one of these ports to support Loki. But honestly, I know I won't. And I'm pretty sure few Slashdot readers will. I just hope that in a few years, I'll be able to change my stance and say that getting a game to work on my Linux box is just as easy as my PC.
The National Security Agency today abandonded its plans to integrate a well-known encryption program into its secure version of Linux. According to an anonymous agent of the NSA, the department was shocked when they read a post on a forum known as Slashdot, that encryption was pointless. Said the staffer, "We've decided to forgo even putting this in, cause, whats the point. In fact we're getting out of the code business altogether. That question on Ask Slashdot was a blow to a lot of people who've spent their lives working on encryption, only to learn its pretty much pointless."
All I've read so far are numerous posts about how the NSA will now be able to spy on PGP-encrypted material. Personally, I think this is a load of bullshit. I doubt the NSA needs to ask the people at PGP labs for assistance in cracking this. Either its been cracked (doubtful) or else the NSA has been so impressed by it, that its decided to integrate it into its OS.
Come on, stop being so damn paranoid. Trust me, you're not nearly as intersting to the government as you might think you are.
Most HL servers, I suspect, are fronts for banner schemes now. These schemes are probably seen by advertisers as part of the primary reasons why the banner market is so unsafe.
Amen brother!
I got so sick of the numerous Hotline sites that would only let you download once you clicked on a dozen banners to get the password, that I set up my own leech server. "Upload if you want, but you don't have too!"
I found that people were so thrilled not to have to dick around with banners and whatnot that they'd upload more stuff than I knew what to do with. I know I got more uploads this way than if I made it a requirement.
Well basically whats going on is this: a buncha companies got venture capital on questionable business plans. When, suprise, suprise, those business plans didn't become profitable, those companies had to lay people off to try to make a profit. This move usually comes about the same time as a company attempts to "reinvent itself". Six months from now, it'll be out of business.
Unfortunately I tried using this device several months ago. Unbeknownst to me, a fly had entered the "teleportation" device with me. Due to a peculiarity of the focusing lens, all the people on the other end saw was a giant flyhead on top of mine. Fortunately disaster was averted when a CGI Vincent Price entered the frame and rebooted the system.
No. Eye-to-eye contact will happen when you're "teleported" into a meeting with one person and that person is teleported into your room. I'll be like the other person is there in front of you, just like in real life. It'll be that way for the person on the other end. At least that's my guess.
As much as I dislike MS, they seem to make it work with the same hardware that Linux has to. As an example, I would love to have a distro that gets sound working by default, w/o having to recompile the kernel and whatnot. Windows does this. So your arguement is flawed.
Perhaps Linus is jealous that someone has created a version of Unix that's highly userfriendly, something I've yet to see from any of the Linux distros. IMHO, this is the biggest problem with Linux, and what will forever prevent it from replacing Windows: its so damn hard to get up and running. When I sit down at a PC, I want to spend my time doing work, not working to get the computer going.
Apple has done this, and from what I've seen, has done it really well. But hey, thats just my opinion.
I dunno how comfortable I feel using a handheld whose only claim to superiority is the fact you can kill errant processes. The implication being that if you have to use this often, the system isn't very stable.
Orrin Hatch is a man who loathes the media. He views it as morally-bankrupt and probably quite leftist. This is his chance to snub an industry thats peeved him for some time. Even though I'm not a big fan of his, this is one time that I'd like to see him succeed.
I can't be the only bastard who sees cancer for what it is...it's a wolf, it kills the weak.
No you're not. I'm pretty sure this was a view held by the Nazi party too!

You guys are all GEEKS. The Macintosh isn't aimed at you.
This is such a great point. When I sit down in front of my computer I want to go play on the Internet. I don't want to spend twenty minutes poking around with esoteric settings trying to get my modem to work. And I'm a pretty computer savvy person. This is what the Mac has done, and done well: It makes it easy for a person to do work on a computer, instead of trying to make a computer work!
Sure, Apple wants to sell their hardware, but they want to sell their OS too. How long, if ever, until we see an x86 port, and some competition for MS Windows?
There are several schools of thought on why Apple hasn't ported its OS to the Intel platform. One holds that it would drain away too much money from Apple's hardware sales. Personally, I doubt this because they'd easily recover the loss with increased software sales.
My opinion, and that of a lot of other people is this: If Apple released its OS for the Intel, it would compete directly with Windows, a much more inferior product. You can better believe that MS would never release *any* of its software for the Apple after that happened. And the inability to run Office on your new AMD-based Apple will really cripple sales.
I post something clever and it gets modded as Off Topic, especially when its *on topic*. So fuck you moderator. Christ I'm going to go to K5 from now on.
Taco, Hemos, et al...if everything you write on April 1st is a prank, it just comes off lame and boring. Had you slipped this in amongst a dozen authentic posts, you'd've probably gotten some bites. Beating people over the head with "the funny" doesn't make it funny. Being sly and subtle goes a lot further than posting every drunken idea that crosses one's mind.
...this question is almost as retarded as the "Do Aliens Have Civil Rights?" question from yesterday. I hope this is just an April Fools joke, especially since there are much more worthwhile topics in the Ask Slashdot section.

Anyone else feel the same way?
Really? Cool! Hey what was the name of my cat, old friend? :)

I wish more Hotline sites understood this.
See here for numerous examples of this.

Whenever someone starts to quote Jello, they lose me. Its almost as bad as quoting L Ron Hubbard, OMNI magazine or Whitney Strieber.
What clown of a moderator marked this parent as a troll? Because I pointed out a flaw of Linux? Fuck you, ass!

Nice troll, but a bit too obvious. If you tried it without the Jeff K sp33k, more people might bite. The key to a good troll is in being subtle.

Who was the genius who moderated this up? iMacs have an SVGA port so you can hook up an additional monitor to it as well.

Just something to consider for next year.
If you're going to come up with an April Fool's prank, at least make it a) believable and b) funny.
