And if everyone torrents everything they watch having new things to torrent wouldn't be a problem either, since there wouldn't be any.

    [Citation Needed]

I know people Probably think you are being silly or whatever, but I feel you have a good point.

Some of the things I watch most often are made by regular joes (Four Player Podcast, minecraft videos, speed runs, "let's play") or I can stream to my console with few or no commercials (Netflix, Machinima, Youtube Movies, Hulu).

And now that I have a choice between faster internet or TV, I realize that the stuff I like to watch is being streamed online for free. Movies that I might have torrented are easier to access on Netflix, and can show me related films. TV shows are organized with extra information about them, and can be easily moved between without using up lots of hard drive storage.

//And just fyi, if more channels would either join netflix or form something similar, I think torrenting would slow significantly. High availability, no commercials, easy navigation and such for a low monthly cost? Dang straight I love it.)

Or you could say that by removing that functionality they made the hacking take longer to finish making working backups than if they had ignored the whole issue.

I am not sure why everyone is on the sides of "Lets make backups of PS3 games". Sony didn't care about our emulators, our homebrew, or our custom programs... it was only when we tried to make easy PS3 game backups that they bothered. And somehow they are evil for protecting the only part of the console that they get ANY money for.

"I don't understand why... keep buying ... consoles and other such devices".

    Allow me to help.

    1) PS3 allows any hard drive, any video camera, any keyboard, any tablet, any printer, etc. It allows you to download random files from the internet, it allows you to play random files and store them on the hard drive, and it allows you to download PSN games onto up to 5 other consoles and let your friends play your games on their profiles. Compared to EVERY OTHER CONSOLE, the PS3 is the most free.
    2) Most new games come out for consoles now, due to the fears of piracy on Computers and other non-locked-down devices. And for games that come out on console AND pc, the console has less security and more stable hardware targets. For example, most PS3 games have no 30 digit id codes, no constant Internet access required for single player games, and easy joining with friends with games.
    3) Updates are not forced. If you wish to use every service available on the PS3 that worked before the last update, you can. It is only if you want the new features, the new games, and the new services on PSN that you have to upgrade.
    4) The Other OS was only taken down AFTER someone started bragging about the ability to copy $60 PS3 games and play them. Until then, people could play emulators, PS1 games, PS2 games, n64, etc. Only 5-6 assholes who are too cheap to afford new games but feel deserving of free stuff ruined it for the rest of us. Or did you want Sony to let this turn out like the PSP, which is so hacked that almost no new games get released for it? They tried to open their system, and they got slapped for it.

So yeah, I bought a PS3 to play PS3 games. The fact that it had all these other benefits were just frosting on the cake. People bitched about the price, so Sony took $100 ps2 out of the system and sold it separately so you could enjoy PS1 and PS2 and not pay for it if you didn't want it.

Sorry, you can get back on your high horse about how evil Sony is. Just wanted to point out that out of all the evil companies out there, Sony is the only one letting you use generic parts and share purchases. Ooo, scary.

Anyway, the only reason they got rid of the Other OS was because of hackers (like the breakout utility) learning how to gain complete control over the OS and possibly backup games.

Now we are racing to hack the console again, forcing Sony to spend time closing holes instead of adding features in a desperate attempt to prevent people from stealing $60 games.

Don't get me wrong, I hacked my PSP like many other people... and although *I* bought all my games, I still saw the number of releases drop to almost zero. I do not wish to see this happen to a major console, and if a simple "Plug usb to hack PS3" program comes out they will disable all usb.

Guys, Sony did not tell you "You get all future updates and games". If you didn't wish to lose Virtual console, you could have not updated (Keeping all games and features available at the time), but one of the effects of getting new games and services from PS3 is that you agree to their terms.

But whatever. Forget the fact that I can buy a game and share it with up to 5 of my friends ps3's without breaking any laws or voiding any warranty. Forget that I can backup and restore settings to any USB device. Lets force Sony to lock down everything like Madagascar because some guys out there wants free games.

The PS3 can use any external hard drive, can use any laptop hard drive internally, can use any keyboard, any camera, any printer, as well as letting you backup to external thumb drives / hard drives, etc. 360 Charges you massive money while refusing competition.

And most importantly, the PS3 only took away the Linux OS after someone claimed to have hacked it, allowing anyone to steal $60 games and blu-ray on their console that they already sell for a loss, the same thing that helped kill the PSP.
The 360 and Wii already have draconian restrictions to keep you from doing this (Can't use external for games, heavy drm on both system and profile, etc).

It wasn't until hackers threatened Sony directly that we lost the virtual machine, and even this was an *OPTIONAL* update, only required if you wished to use future PS3 features.

I know you are trying to build some type of evil Sony gonna kill our kid scenario, but out of everyone on the ball field they offer the most freedom.
