  1. Re:So what they're saying here is... on Student, Denied Degree For MySpace Photo, Sues · · Score: 1
A relative of mine teaches in Kingston, NY in the ghetto. He'll be making over $55k this year, with tenure as a math teacher now after only 2 years out of college. Teachers get paid *good* money now, with phenomenal benefits (which they were initially given to offset poor pay). Because of the strength of the teaching unions, their payrate continues to increase at a rate much higher than the national average. Also, typically private schools pay less, and have worse working conditions.

Regardless, the real problem that they face is an over-abundance of elementary-ed majors getting out of college with no jobs to place them in.

..low paying.. You clearly do not pay property taxes. Teachers now make more than the private sector, and in many instances, significantly more. Coupled with essentially "free" benefits for life, and it's quite the cushy job.
  3. Is this guy a "real" journalist? on What's The Greatest Web Software Ever? · · Score: 4, Insightful

Or just another blogger? Besides the fact that it's nearly impossible to read his article, and the fact that it lumps dissimilar items together on a top-# list, his omissions make this a waste of time. Top "web software" and no NCSA Mosaic or Netscape Navigator (1.0)? Also, I thought the WELL was a BBS/Shell account provider?

Well, in the same way that most people don't consider turntables/DJ equipment as musical instruments, I think the same could be said for laptops/PCs.

  7. Labtop as an instrument? on The Laptop as an Instrument? · · Score: 1

What's the most interesting laptop-only live act you have seen/heard? None? There's probably great sound editing and mixing software available nowadays, but since when are we considering anything with an audio out plug an instrument? And why focus on laptops? I know that there are guys on the 'net who remix C64/Amiga machine beeps into songs - but we don't consider them instruments. Oh, and one of the links is from 2003.

  13. Power a light rail system? on New Jersey Turnpike As a Power Source? · · Score: 1
The majority of the Turnpike runs through the middle of nowhere - where light rail is unnecessary and impractical. The areas down near Philly and up near NYC where it would be useful already have many other public transportation options, and the real estate necessary for such a rail line wouldn't just "open up."

Oh, and for what it's worth, this wouldn't be installed, anyway. Given the state's current budget woes, I doubt the perpetually corrupt/in-power Democrats have the chutzpah to pass it.

I couldn't care less. I use Google as a search engine, and that's the extent of it. If I was using a MySpace clone that decided to censor opinions, I'd use a different site.

People really need to stop complaining for the sake of complaining when shit like this happens. Don't like it? Stop using said site. Reduce their ad dollars, and only then will they change their stance. Also, keep in mind that a large majority of these "community based" sites' users tend to be either kids or morons, neither or which tend to be that concerned or knowledgeable about privacy rights or censorship. So in the end, it's nice that we can all bitch and moan, but will it do anything? Doubtful.
