I know there'll be people saying it's not a next-gen console because it's graphics aren't much if any better than a PS3, but I would say it is, because it is one that has been designed after seeing the results of the current gen. Like the Wii, Nintendo decided the key to advancement was not pushing graphics, but other aspects of the user experience.
Using the word "socialist" without defending it is equivalent to the use of "communist" in the 1950s.
There were communist spies and sympathizers in the 50's, actively trying to destroy the United States. Don't let McCarthy's excessive make you forget that fact.
That's something that I haven't seen a language really get right since FORTH. I'd love to be able to use C# in a similar way, entering small function definitions from the command line, compiling them as they're entered, interactively testing functions as they're written. It's a great way to speed development.
2) It seems humanity needs something a bit bigger than West Virginia to not screw up genetically.
is way off. All of humanity has been reduced to a population far smaller than WV's, and rebounded rather successfully. Places such as Australia were colonized by a much smaller number of people, and survived. If you can get a population of a few thousand or mre, I don't think there'll be any problems... not to mention, sending frozen sperm from tens of thousands of donors would be a simple and relatively inexpensive way to keep the genetics diverse.
We could probably handle cutting our defense budget in half; it would still be the largest on Earth. I think that cut would endanger our allies (who would have to fend for themselves) more than ourselves.
No, it's science fiction. It won't seem it when you read it the first time, but that's because Wolfe is writing on a level that is amazingly subtle. One of the finest living writers, in my opinion.
Yahoo mail isn't any worse than any of the alternative email programs. I know lots of people that still use Yahoo for mail.
None of them use it as a start page/portal/search engine, though. I'm not sure of any functionality it has other than mail that is particularly valuable... it has some ok financial reporting, I think.
I miss having a good tiered and human-reviewed directory of web sites, though, like Yahoo was when it started.
However, in Win8 you can just clickthrough to the full, standard windows desktop, so at least they haven't removed the option. Gnome seems to eagerly remove options.
Only if you don't consider property rights as innate human rights. In the US, rights are generally considered as recognized by the government, not granted.
I think you're too quick to dismiss the importance of relative moods. Pain or pleasure is often relative to a normal baseline, and if somebody never experiences pain, they will be terribly hurt by a small trauma. Similarly, a small bit of happiness in a miserable life can be transforming.
I agree that all states aren't relative. I'd offer 'contentment' as an example. It's a wonderful feeling, and it doesn't really fade. You have it or you don't.
Republicans have a higher proportion of married people and parents than democrats. That might contribute to their higher happiness levels.
Another might be the urban/rural split. Urban dwellers are more likely democrat, and also more likely miserable. I noted a while ago that democrats are more likely to launch into profanity on a bulletin board than republicans... I eventually decided that it has nothing to do with politics, but just a side effect of democrats being generally more urban and younger.
Final Fantasy X2 is one of the many spin-off games with "Final Fantasy" in the title that aren't part of the main sequence.
Hmm... I'm not so sure of that. Things like Revenant Wings, FF13Versus, those are spin offs. FFX-2 was a direct sequel (and really underappreciated). In my heart of hearts, I'd consider it a real FF more than FFXI or XIV.
What's the power density of fat? Not that different than gasoline, I'd think.
Ok, I googled it. Fat is 37 mj per kilo, gasoline is 47 mj per kilo. Not substantially different; it is certainly far more energy-dense than NmH batteries, which run about 300 kj. In fact, it's two orders of magnitude better. It's just getting the energy out of it that's troublesome.
Yes, they absolutely should have changed the name. Even "Liberty Office Suite", "FreeDocument Suite", etc., although kind of dumb, would have been vastly better than what they ended up with.
But the damage is done, and I think switching now would cause even more damage. They've been GIMP'ed, and are now stuck with it.
They better get rid of any physical media, and make it download only.
God, I hope not. That would be the factor that made me abandon consoles for good.
I think that argument is as silly as saying that the market for TVs is dead since you can watch video on your smartphone.
The market for games is being expanded by smartphones, but not supplanted.
Computer hardware is ever changing. Game on your computer, not some shitty console.
Your first point is an argument against your second point.
The Wii-U is due out next year.

I think the touchscreen resurgence was started by Nintendo, actually.
Your first point is probably correct, but this:

Heh. "In partnership with AOL Search".
Actually, this looks useful. Thank you.

Because Polaris.

Funny how all the people I know that take happy pills end up unhappy.

But if you're 'happy' studying, you'll be happy studying more. Enjoying the process can lead to success, just as much as enjoying the results.

You seem obsessed. I made a mistake. Most people would just move on.
You're making a mistake, in addition to the original. You're not moving on.
At this point, you're just an object lesson for other slashdot readers.

It's all a move to maintain greater output from the populace.
That's right. It's the greedy 1%, making us 99% live twice as long just so they can profit off our backs.
Heh. You touched some nerves with that.
