There is a loud segment of slashdot that just hates Javascript. It's not a bad language at all; much better than many in common use (say... PHP). The hostile moderators are unable to seperate a fairly decent language from the occasionally annoying uses of it.

I see the same thing with flash. Actionscript 3, which is closely related to Javascript, is really nice. A lot of cool and interesting things can easily be done in Flash. But, some people think of "punch the monkey" ads, and assume that flash is a bastard child of a programming language.

Look at Joe The Plumber's question to Obama: he basically wanted to know, "if a miracle happens and I'm suddenly filthy rich, will I have to pay more in taxes?" to which the answer was "yes." So he was very upset because he believed that a miracle was going to happen to him. Same thing holds with many slashdotters.

You absolutely miss the point of Joe the Plumber's question. I've listened to interviews with the guy; it would take a fair amount of class snobbery to think he was an idiot. (And yes, there was a MASSIVE amount of class snobbery directed at him after his brief celebrity.)

Joe wasn't purely self-servingly opposed to the tax scheme because he expected it to affect him. He used himself as an example to illustrate the moral and economical destructiveness of raising taxes on high earners, harm brought to anybody that falls into that category. It is an important question, since (despite you claiming it would be a 'miracle') it happens often in our society.

In other words, he was thinking in the abstract, based on general principles; you are thinking that his question was purely about himself.

The failure rate for 360's is OBVIOUSLY too high, by far. I doubt that the rate is truly >50%, though... a little while back, I saw a report from a retail association that said they were getting a 16% return rate.

I would think that close scrutiny of some of Microsoft's financial reporting would give you a better idea of failure rates.

Protecting property is hardly justification for risking someone's life, thief or no thief. Civilized people know that, which is why our civilized rules say he should be arrested.

Absolutely it is. Killing a thief on your property, in the act, is morally acceptable. It's a perfectly civilized act in response to the uncivilized act of the thief.

Unfortunate accident, surely; but it was the drunken teenager that made the fatal mistake, not the homeowner... just as surely as if he had wandered onto the middle of the road and fallen asleep, it wouldn't be the driver's fault who ran over him.

The Wii has significantly better video output than the PS2. Heck, the Gamecube was significantly better, and the Wii is a substantial bump over that. The Wii can output all games/video to 480p; the PS2 can only do that on a few select games.

Guitar Hero is a perfectly stable system, and you can get a perfect score with no thought at all.

None of what you say... 'tactical depth', 'real time decision making'... have anything to do with whether something is a game. Only what type of a game it is.

You can get a perfect score with little thought (not none)... true. But you need an IMMENSE amount of skill and talent to get a perfect score.
