  1. Forged but not duplicated? on Scientists Find Way To Combat Forged DNA · · Score: 2, Informative

This helps prevent the issue of "artificially" generated DNA that was talked about earlier. But only 1 of 2 methods have been solved. What about replicated/duplicated DNA which isn't using other combined DNA?

Either way, like I said before, technology is an arms race. They have authentication for simple forgery, but wait for the next big thing that will fool these tests. Good for them though at least :)

Being that the distribution is based on a binomial choice, the chance of guessing the prior value is 50%. That is, if you toss a coin, you have a 50% chance of correctly choosing the value

Wouldn't it be like tossing 2 coins? Since the original data is a flipped coin, and your guess would be the 2nd flipped coin, you would theoretically have less than 50% (25%?) chance of guessing correctly. I'm sure the odds of 2 consecutive coin flips being the same are less than 50%.

Based on his description, he assumes the drive is all 1s or all 0s, and you have a 50/50 chance of lucking out on the coin to get it right.

  3. No such thing as balance. on The Challenges of Class Balance In MMOGs · · Score: 1

In reality, there is no such thing as "perfect" balance. In most games I have played, people tend to stick with only 1 build/strategy because of some more highly skilled player succeeding with it (for him). Then for some time, this "ultimate" build is considered overpowered, until time goes on and some other intelligent individual figures out a way to counter (so people either believe the counter is overpowered or their once thought of ultimate build is underpowered). Balance is countered by strategy/skill. Sure, there requires some balance, but you can never perfect it.

I've seen some awfully realistic-looking faked videos

I'm sorry, I just wasn't fooled. Perhaps thinking beforehand it was fake? Or quite possibly because I play too many physics games and understand that it was moving too fast. Or perhaps there's that unexplainable uncanny valley that we have.

Back in the day (2000?) when CGI was coming out for movies, people thought it was pretty real. Then after watching some more recent ones, and going back it looks incredibly fake to people.

From a technical point of view, it will just be one of those tug of wars where we will find better ways of looking at DNA/replicating it.

I'm sure it has been done, but coming from a business perspective - that is sadly a terrible idea. Depending on your redundancy, this is in no way a place to store data (cause what are you really using it for? backups, mission critical storage that should be left on a server?).

If any of the machines go down, or the user takes it offline (reboot/laptop/virus/whatever), you lose that portion already. Even accounting for redundancy, lets say 3x, you would cut the available space by 3. But even then, what if a virus spreads on your network.

But this assumes you are storing business related information on your business' hardware. What would you store on it that isn't a backup/mission critical?
