It is the parents that are not the same. Most days my kid watches no TV at all. Most days I actually take the time to do something with him that makes him think. Most of the kids start out pretty much the same. It is the values given to them by the parents that make the difference. If their parents value education then they will probably eventually do so themselves. I send my kid to private school. It is primarily because of the parents. If there is a disruptive kid in the class you can be assured that with 20 other parents paying $20K+ that either their parent or the school eventually corrects the situation. Not so in public school. They end up in science for poets or music. Not good for the disruptive kid or the kids whose class they end up in. Sad, but this seems to be the case. Bill Gates can fault the schools all he wants but what is the reality. The top %10 of China's graduating high schoolers is larger than the entire graduating class of high schoolers each year in the US. This is a fact and no additional money for schools will change this. Companies like M$ then poach these top tier people cheaply because they do not have the same opportunities in their own countries. There is no shortage of talent being produced here. They just want and get better jobs than what M$ will offer them. Programming has turned into a commodity job in many respects.
Marc Andreessen finally gets the recognition he deserves. The internet was built on the backs of so many that have failed to be rewarded for their efforts contributions and creations. Finally Marc is getting his due. I hope that he enjoys the money an treats himself to another Yacht or something special like a Jet. The creator of Lynx should field honored that his contributions were recognized.
I have found myself in your situation for a number of other reasons. My Solution has been to incorporate exercise into my everyday experience.
1. Under 5 floors I always use the stairs.
2. I make sure incorporate a walk to work. Park farther away or use Public Transport. (15 min each way)
3. Walk during lunch.
4. Don't use escalators.
5. Salad for lunch 3 days a week.
6. Reduce alcohol intake.
7. Fruit and Greek yogurt for breakfast.
8. Avoid pure carbs for breakfast - only gets you to eat to much at lunch.
9. Eat earlier and less for dinner if you must cut back on a meal.
None of these has to be done for very long each day. Abstinence, Radical Diet Changes and things that require you to consistently carve out 1 hr a day (ie going to gym) are not sustainable. Variables in work/family life usually prevent it in my case. Small changes over a long period of time work best for me.
Went from pushing #200 to #175 in little under a year just doing those things. Without totally giving things I like - good food and drink.
Woz has not been officially affiliated with Apple for how long. The author seems to write as if Apple is still in some way associated with Woz. This is mostly journalist seeking news where there is none.

I sold computers retail before and after Visicalc. By far the most important program I have ever seen. The computers began to sell themselves. MBA's from Philip Morris would put Apple ]['s in their tobacco sheds running Visicalc. They would bring them back to me with Tobacco dust in in them for maintenance. The program opened up the use of computers to an entirely new class of users. I have not seen that kind of innovation since.
People lost their homes, loved ones, possessions and jobs. Why anyone would think the power plant issue/evacuation is the main source of their depression is beyond comprehension.
The managers that ran screaming...you didn't want them. They are hiring on buzword filled resumes that they actually think mean something. You want a manager/company that wants extremely bright people that can solve problems that do not have buzwords yet. How long did you really network trying to find a job? 6 months a year at least is necessary. Work your connections or linkdin. Tackle this as you would a networking problem.
Time for professional MS watchers to find another company to watch. I am tired of hearing about their decline. It has already happend and will eventually show in their balance sheet. Until then watchers will still watcher and haters gotta hate:)

An Instagram is defined as Facebook what paid for a Photo Touchup service. His stuff could actually make them more competitive. A bird in the hand is worth 5 of what some VC will claim you will make if you hold out for an IPO.
As long as there is job mobility Unions are a waste. Developers have long voted for better wages with their feet. If your working conditions suck, use the feet. Now if situations change Unions become an option. At that point I will be finding the next vocation that lets me use my feet instead.
What is the chance I can make an energy efficient application for mobile technology if I had to make it cross platform. I will argue that my cost go up for each OS I support. My guess is 3 is one too many, so M$ is doomed at this point. Supportig iOS and Android is economical since they already have market share. Risking a third will only kill your profitability. It is up to M$ to provide the incentive by either paying for great apps, providing a market were margins are higher or giving away their devices so that developers can have enough customers to make money. As much as I have had a l dislike/hate relationship with M$ in the past I will be sad to see them go. I only hope that Apple will continue on their current path and become the company to replace my dislike/hate relationship with M$. I can only hope.
For your own as well his well being keep him away from games and TV as long as you are capable. It is crack to kids. The real world will provide him with far more variation in Hand Eye coordination than a game can/will ever deliver. Walking is just as import. Take time to read to him. No matter how hard you try to keep games away from him he will be exposed to them regardless. In no time he will master the trivial skills necessary to master game play and keyboards. I am not anti games but I currently have a 9 year old so I know what you are thinking. Read, Read Read Read to him, far more important. The structure of our language models our thinking, Failure to master basic communication skills will be far more devastating. Consider this, he will probably not even have to use a keyboard when he is an adult because they will be obsolete.

There is no minimum hours. Your have to build %51 of the project yourself to meet the requirements fo experimental certification. If the total project is 10 hours your have to build 6 hours yourself. Even if the kit manufacture sets up a factory to do assembly in 5 hours that would take you as an individual 3000 hours. Your are correct that people under estimate the effort involved in most kits. However you as the builder are the licensed mechanic and assume the liability as such. The FAA will happily let your plow yourself into your own grave aslong as they are reasonably sure no one else will get hurt in the process. There are some basic flight test you must perform to certify your aircraft, High speed taxi - run the aircraft down the runway without taking off and see if the gear falls off an the engine maintains power. Fly the plane a brief period in ground effect to to see if it is controllable in flight. In is called opening the envelope (go read the "Right Stuff"). All in all the requirements are probably scarily minimal when it come down to it. Nad if you are smart enough to build the plane in the first place probably a process you would see as prudent. And for amazingly small amounts of money private test pilots will risk testing your aircraft. After you personally fly your aircraft within 50 or 100? miles of your base airport for 50 hours you are then allowed to be certified as experimental. Engines are the tough part. You cannot manufacture them yourself and they have to be reliable. Liability is an issue for manufacturers so they are not cheap.
Actually for boats the requirements are quite rigorous and enforced mainly because you can usually pile more people on a boat than a home built aircraft.
