Microsoft still has three out of ten people running an old version of its browser more than 18 months after Internet Explorer 7 launched, while Firefox has converted more than half of its users to the latest version in just over a week. That should set a few alarm bells ringing in Redmond.
Huh? This means absolutely nothing. If you want to give us data that's meaningful, tell us how many converts to IE7 there were in the first week, or wait 1.5 years and see how many people are using FF3 versus old versions. Then we'd have some comparable data. A rapid expansion right off the bat, for example, does not necessarily indicate that the final tally will be in FF's favor.
Furthermore, a decent chunk of IE users are the "computer = magic black box" type, who use IE because it's what came on the computer. If those people aren't doing Windows Updates (likely enough, imo), they won't get IE7. By contrast, the vast majority of Firefox users use it by choice, not because it was there. Those people are far more likely to manually upgrade.
This whole "data point" is utterly worthless for determining what's actually going on.
Don't get so goddamned defensive. No one is downplaying the suffering that people with mental disabilities face (or those who care for them), what's being said is that it's not fair for them to have to pay a metric shit-ton of money to find relief. In other words, WE'RE ON YOUR SIDE AND WANT THINGS TO BE BETTER FOR YOU.
YES. I never stop feeling proud of the fact that I can point to him, and say "That man is my senator". If only we had more Congressmen like him, we might not be giving up civil liberties hand over fist.

Citibank is reissuing ATM cards following a December server breach in which hackers stole customer PIN codes... I believe you misspelled "ATM machine cards" and "PIN numbers", sir. Please correct this oversight as soon as is convenient for you.
In the real world, Java is about as niche as Linux. Er... define "real world". That greatly affects the truth of your statement. Desktop PCs, for example, are most definitely a "real world" scenario, and Linux is extremely niche there.
"Because the debian guys are retarded and refuse to include useful software on the basis of license" isn't exactly a compelling reason for the importance of this event. It should be significant in its own regard, not because it helps idiots continue being idiotic.
This is a lie which is propagated over and over. You do not have to join a hardcore raiding guild to enjoy endgame content in WoW. My guild is currently running the T5 instances, three days a week, for about 3 hours a night. That's a whopping 5% of a week, and we do fairly well and have a lot of fun. If 5% is a massive time investment to you, then I think your sense of proportion might be out of whack.
No. It's still highly unlikely. Is it possible, even likely, that this woman has a problem with WoW? Most certainly. What the GP was calling "unlikely" is that WoW itself is the problem, as opposed to some facet of this woman's life/personality that makes her turn towards the game so hard. If it wasn't WoW, it'd be something else, in all probability.
Oh, java must be crap because you can't tell, right? It's pretty damned easy to tell what should happen. f(foo(a)); should run f on the return value of foo(a). f(a); foo(a); will depend on the specific functions involved (and whether a is passed by reference or value), so it isn't the language's fault if your example is bad. In the c++ example, the expected behavior is clear: f(a++) should be the same as f(a); a++; because it's a postfix increment. If the actual behavior doesn't match that, that's C++'s fault. Likewise, if the Java behavior doesn't match what's logical, that's Java's fault.
Also, saying "Java sucks too so that makes C++ not suck" doesn't hold any water. If C++ sucks, and Java sucks too, they both suck, C++ doesn't magically become ok. It's not like C++ sucking depends on Java not sucking.
Fscking trolls. Let's start:
But, based on my understanding of several recent different but similar situations involving movies and music, we can all safely assume that those people would not have bought the game to begin with. No one with a lick of sense has ever claimed that for movies/music. You're probably confusing the sensible, substantially different, argument that NOT ALL pirates would have bought the original. No reasonable person claims that no one would have, just that it's probably more in the middle, not at the extreme the **AA wants you to believe.
We can also take comfort in knowing that the companies from whom the graphics were lifted probably keep the lion's share of the profit from game sales and the graphic artists make almost nothing, by comparison. That doesn't make it right when people infringe the **AA's copyrights, and it doesn't make it right here.
Also, if the guy at 'Limbo of the Lost' bought the game it is his to do with what he wishes because he didn't agree to any stupid 'don't lift graphics' clause and shrinkwrap licenses have never been proven in court anyway so no one has any legal standing to complain about anything. Yeah, pretty sure that the GRAPHICS THEMSELVES are copyrighted, not just the game. Epic fail.
This includes if he wants to make a mashup of the game's graphics and his own cool gaming idea and call it 'Limbo of the Lost'. Everyone here knows that fair use doesn't cover cases where a) you use a substantial portion of the original, and b) you barely add anything to the original content.
So, you mindlessly flame, distort others' words far past their true meanings, and, in short, provide nothing except pure drivel. Classic troll. How this got modded insightful is beyond me, but I doubt it'll last. Of course, presumably you know that, since you're posting AC, and thus, are likely just not man enough to use your regular account.
The mere fact that you need a very recently made computer to run the operating system alone is a sign the OS is doing things it shouldn't. No, with the way Windows is typically distributed, that means MS is doing it right. The majority of Vista sales are going to be with new (i.e., recently made) computers, so it SHOULD be tailored to take advantage of the systems it's going to see the most use on. To do otherwise would be foolish.
As much as it may make me sound like an uncaring asshole (which isn't true), I can't honestly condone that. A rape pregnancy is about the most horrible thing I can imagine happening to someone... but (for sake of argument, accept the pro-life "abortion is murder" stance), is the answer to one heinous deed (rape) to commit another (murder)? We wouldn't allow a rape victim to murder her rapist, as much as we might sympathize with her desire to do so... neither should we allow her to kill her innocent (if ill-begotten) child.
It's a VERY tough situation, though, and I wouldn't condemn someone as unreasonable if they don't agree with me in the least. Even though I'm pretty sure that the conclusion I've reached is the most just, it still leaves a bad taste in my mouth, cause it is necessarily really hard on the mother.
Vista is a dog.
Sorry, I used it, on brand new hardware with shit-gobs of memory. Apparently not. I use it on a fairly new computer, with not-shit-gobs of memory (Athlon 64 X2 4400+, 2 GB), and it runs just fine. Vista is fine, you just need to have a half-decent system (and you shouldn't have anything less than 1 or 2 GB with how cheap memory is these days).
FOSS has nothing to do with it, and you know it. What matters is the software being free (as in cost, not freely modifiable), and good software. Closed-source software can achieve such things just as easily. Hell, didn't someone just say, in this discussion, that Flash player gets 12 million downloads a day?
No, they don't. If you run Windows, you paid for IE. No. Unless they start offering a version of Windows without IE, which is cheaper, you paid for Windows. You get new versions of IE for free, after all, and they used to offer it for the Mac for free.
It's a pretty sad statement about a product when people are willing to pay MORE not to use it. More like a pretty sad statement about people's susceptibility to FUD about a product. The vast majority of Vista hate I hear is FUD.
I didn't realize that censorship, surveillance, union busting, and silencing political parties had become un-American... Uh... it always was. It always will be. Whether our government does it or not has no bearing on whether it's un-American, or ethically permissible.

You know, all the replies helpfully "reminding" me that "ATM machine" and "PIN number" are redundant make me weep for the state of /. :/
Also, I think I have hearing loss from the deafening WHOOOOSH made as the joke went over some people's heads.
Yeah, you missed the sarcasm. I was joking there. :)

That's fair. It's basically the absolute worst situation possible if you don't support abortion, I wish there was a good solution. :/

Ew.
I live in Wisconsin.
