But then you play all the other ones in between waiting for releases and you get some perspective on the stories, characters, battle strategies, etc Yeah, I did that too. I still rate FF7 as the best in series, and is easily in my top 5 games overall (probably at #1, but it gets pretty fuzzy trying to rate legendary games against legendary games).

And like, FFVII is a popular franchise with a rich universe, but the gameplay wasn't that great. So unless they're going to make radical changes (I doubt it), then why get excited about a re-release? It's not like they used any FFVII-specific spell effects that would look SO COOL rendered in HD, relative to any other release. Disagree. I think FF7 has great gameplay. Some things didn't work (Gold Saucer, I'm lookin' at you), but the materia system was incredible. It lent great customization to the game, and I still occasionally find out about really cool materia combos.

Why not take a property that was mildly popular, and redo that one instead, and ramp up the marketing and polish on that universe? If you look at it from a fanservice perspective, you want to remake the game with the most fans. If you look at it from a sales perspective, you want to remake the game with the most fans. Either way, you take the most popular game and remake it. That's how I'd do it at least.

FFVI was remade too soon. FF6 wasn't really remade, just ported with some extra stuff tacked on. This is, however, the other obvious candidate for a remake (even though, ironically enough, I think it's vastly overrated... which is not to say I dislike it).

I'd only play a remake of FFVII if they actually changed the game engine -- updating CG is not enough. That's not what ANY fan of a game wants out of a remake, in my experience (well, almost any). The fans are going to want the same game with prettier graphics, and changing it is going to be something akin to terrible blasphemy. I'd like to think I wouldn't be horribly upset over them changing the game like that (hell, I can play the old one, and ignore the new, if it pisses me off that much), but I'd still be irked. And I'm a rather reasonable representative of a fanboy... the rabid ones are horrible.

Regardless, the point is that making a remake of FF7 is one of the most sensible remakes, just because of fan base. There are only two remakes which make sense, FF7 and FF6... and I'd hope that either of those, if done, would be followed by the other. I want an FF7 remake because that's my favorite RPG. You're acting as though the fact that some people consider FF7 overrated means it's not worthy. Fast forward to 10 years from now, if Bungie decides to remake one of their games. There are going to be people (and not a tiny number of them) who say that Marathon or Myth should be remade, because Halo is vastly overrated (hell, people say that about Halo now). However, the ideal choice for a remake would be Halo (or something in that series), just because that's the game with the biggest following. FF7 is the same way, it's either Square's #1 or tied for #1 (hard to get a good grip on this stuff from casual observation) RPG, fan-wise. That makes it worthy for a remake.

OK, first, DRM is not the law. It is a scheme that copyright holders have been trying to force on consumers because they imagine that everyone they do business with is a criminal. DRM isn't the law, but I'd wager the AC was referring to the DMCA, which makes circumvention of DRM against the law.

I really don't know how you made the connection between Halo 2 and DRM either. I guess maybe you're equating OS restriction with DRM, which is fair, but Microsoft's strategy isn't testing any sort of DRM, imo. Their strategy is "Hey, we have this game that people like, let's make it exclusive to our new OS, so people will want to buy it!" No DRM-testing there, just trying to bolster sales of a new product.

At any rate, my plus point for Vista is simply that there's no real negative. I have had almost no issues with it (KOTOR won't work for some reason, much to my chagrin), but beyond that, it's simply a new version of Windows, neither great nor awful. I use Vista because it's the future of Windows, whether anyone likes it or not, and as I prefer Windows, that makes Vista a big part of my computing future. I know this won't convince any Vista haters, it's simply honesty on my part.

Your point about Resident Evil 4 is fair, though. I'll count that, I hadn't even thought of it (it hasn't been out for long, as I recall). So we're still at 2, possibly 3 for the Wii, 2 for the PS3. That's not a big gap.

Anyways, depending on what games are out (or you anticipate coming out) for a console, that can be more important than the price. There's nothing out for the 360 that could inspire me to buy one. Not for $50. The only game coming out that I want to play is Halo 3... well, that's not enough to inspire me to spend $400, either. I'll just go out and rent a 360 this fall, or borrow one from one of my friends.

The PS3's library is similarly anemic at the moment (well... ok, Ninja Gaiden Sigma is sex, but that's an Xbox port so I'm not sure how much it counts), but at least it has FF13 coming out, almost certainly more games after that, God of War 3 (rumored), AND it plays my PS2 games. That works great for me, and I'm happy with my PS3. Money is a consideration, to be sure, but games are at least an equally big consideration. Ideally, you want both, and now the PS3 is within $100 of its games-deprived competitor. Hell, if Sony hadn't dropped the ball and abandoned the 20-gig PS3, PS3s would be the same price as 360s. 1) Our lawmakers have the responsibility to give a big law like this its own proper attention and debate, even if they don't feel like it.
    2) If you want a law to fly under the radar... that disgusts me. The members of Congress are supposed to be representing us, not trying to get things shoved through under our noses without us noticing!

It works like this--consoles are better at playing video games, PC's are better at being PC's. No. That's about as far from true as you can get. I've been doing both PC and console gaming for 10 years now, and the PC gaming experience has always been superior. Will it always be that way? Who knows. As long as there are certain genres of games (RTS, FPS) which work like crap on a console, and as long as controllers are available for the PC (making the PC just as good at those genres which work better with controllers), PCs will be better, I predict. Whether I'm right about that or not... you're incorrect (imho) to say consoles are better for games. They're simpler, but that isn't necessarily better. All a console has going for it is that you don't have to install your games. Nothing more.

Except the PS3, which makes a shitty PC, a decent game console if HD is the only differentiating feature for you... I have a PS3, and it's a damn good console. Too expensive? Yeah. I bought it because my PS2 was dead, and it made no sense to buy another PS2 when I knew I was getting a PS3 eventually. Otherwise I would've waited. But I have games which are quite good for it (Madden 08, Ninja Gaiden Sigma, Marvel Ultimate Alliance), not to mention my PS2 library... and hey, I got to check out the Blu-Ray thing as a bonus. I'm quite happy with my PS3, thank you very much. It's more than just "decent", and HD is not the only differentiating feature for me. I have good games now, and I have even better games to look forward to (FF13 being the notable one).

My rule of thumb in the console war going on is the same as the one I apply to Vista: "Don't believe the hype." Don't listen to everyone telling you that the PS3 is the greatest thing since sliced bread, and don't listen to everyone telling you it sucks monster balls.
