What is really funny is that it has been said that mods are in fact detrimental to the gaming industry and TFC and Counterstrike were cited as specific examples. The person that wrote the article (can't find it though) claimed that because people were playing halflife mods three years after the game initially came out (the article was in 2001, HL came out in 1998) was hurting the sales of new games. Why go spend $50 when I can play TFC for years? I loved the single player of HL, but TFC was what hooked me. My girlfriend still shouts "The flag is in the corner!" to mock me of my clanning days.
Plus, a lot of people of here go on about $20 a CD - we get buttfucked here in the UK on prices and we only pay about £10 (maybe 16 dollars-ish?) - AFAIK U.S. pay even less.
At the mall next door a regular priced CD is either $18.99 or $19.99 at "FYE". An "On sale" CD is either $14.99 or $15.99. $20 for a CD is pretty par for the course once you include tax.
And by "accomplished artist" you mean bands (most of them) that I question how they even got signed (especially ones that don't write their own music)? I'll stick to the local stuff. If I don't like a local act, I don't go see them again. Simple.
My dad and I about 10 years ago tried finding a Heathkit radio kit but to no avail. We thought it would be a good project for us to do together but since this was pre-internet for the masses, doing a google search back then wasn't possible.:-) Does anyone know of some stores that still stock/sell them? I think the company has gone out of business.
The 505 has no inputs though so I can't record me and my band playing, or record shows of bands that allow taping. At least with the 707 and N1 you can do that stuff, but you can't upload it at 32x. You have to line-in to your soundcard and record it real-time. Blech.
And I'm still waiting for a minidisc player that lets me upload recordings to my computer in faster-than-real time. I guess the current belief (SONY NetMD) is that allowing the minidisc player to do so would promote piracy.
DRM isn't even a Bad Thing(tm). Protecting artists and preventing piracy are both Good Things (tm) as long as doing so doesn't stamp on the rights of the consumer. The problems are A) the RIAA/MPAA don't care about the rights of the consumer and B) legislating technology is like holding water in your hands. As soon as there is movement, some will slip through your fingers. The RIAA/MPAA need to work with consumers to ensure that everyone's rights are protected and in doing so, still making the method of media transfer seamless.
Seriously hear me out: What would truly be the best for everyone, artists, producers, and consumers would be if artistA produces a CD/DVD/whatever and sells it to consumerB. ConsumerB is then able, via some sort of ID chip in all his electronic devices, to put his copy of the CD on any machine, including multiple machines, as long as they are his. If consumerB made a copy of the CD and gave it to friendC, friendC couldn't play the CD because their ID isn't the same as consumerB's, or pirateD on morpheus couldn't play the CD because his winamp ID isn't consumerB's. This would allow consumerB all the fair use he could handle, while the artist doesn't lose income because piracy.
What would this require? Some sort of ID that people could activate and assign their own ID to. It would also require the cooperation of all technology manufacturers. And an unbreakable ID encoding. The only problems are: People won't buy products with the ID chip understandably. The tech companies won't cooperate. And no system is unbreakable. On top of this, it shouldn't be a government mandated, spawn of the RIAA/MPAA, system. It has to be developed with the cooperation of the consumer.
Everyone is complaining that the AIW sucks for TiVo like functionality. fine. Someone please tell me a card that works great. I don't have an AIW, but I have a Lifeview card and a STB OEM card (both bt878) and I _still_ cannot get either one to record shows under Linux. I am not a configuration guru, but after three days of changing modprobe settings, the best I could get is video with no audio while recording (the STB card, audio is present when just watching tv). I have tried changing the recording input to line1 (the tv card patches into the soundcard) to no avail. Also, this is only works on my Windows machine when dual booted into Linux. My main linux machine, with the Lifview, tries to use the Intel i810 audio with no results, and gets video only after manually modprobing it.
What is the best "plug it in and it just works" card?
If you think MS doesn't have a services arm, you are sadly mistaken. Microsoft is one of my companies _partners_ and they have come in, undercut us, and we've lost work to them. They are specifically targeting fortune 500 companies and doing whatever it takes to get Windows, SQL Server, etc in there if it isn't already. They may not be a total solution like IBM Global Services, but they have a technical services branch, trust me.
But McDonald's _was_ liable in that case. They were serving their coffe at scalding temperatures, well above what is needed to keep it "hot". Info on the case is here. Many people think this was a bogus lawsuit, but it really wasn't. It actually effected positive change in a corporation benefitting the consumer. The british judge probably didn't bother to read the case.
I saw blade II. Did I love it? Nah. Did I hate it? Nah. Did I seriously expect character development and a sense of being moved at the end. Puh-lease. Blade II is a summer flick, 3 months too early. You expect fights, cool gadgets, and an occasional betrayal. Blade II delivers. It succeeds in its mission. Should you go see it? I dunno. It depends on what you're looking for in a summer flick released in the spring.
PS I think JasonX looks like Grade A, B movie goodnes.

How am I supposed to read the debug statements about needing beer in my fridge if it scrolls by that fast? I'll keep linux on my Celery 800 thanks. A nice leisurely compile. You kids with your 7.5 second compile times. In my day...

I got to see two hours of Milla Jovovich (who called Grand Theft Auto "GTA" on The Daily Show the other night. score), and my girlfriend had nightmares. Mission accomlished as far as I'm concerned.
A) I play several instuments. Bass, trombone, tuba, a little clarinet and a little piano.
B) I do record music. It's crappy garage band type music that I play with my friends every Monday night, but I enjoy listening to us more than listening to other people
C) My post addresses what happens when you "change your listening habits". The RIAA sees it as a drop in sales because of piracy regardless of the reason. Read the post. You sound more like you're replying to the parent I replied to and not to me.
But when people stop buying music (and assume they are good citizens and don't download it instead), the RIAA claims falling CD sales are because of piracy, not because people are boycotting $18 CDs. Boycotting is sadly a lose-lose situation. If you don't buy it, regardless if you're downloading or not, you feed into the RIAA's "CD sales are falling and its all because of pirates" campaign.
Movie titles. There are tons out there and more coming out all the time. They don't have to be good ones (my friend here was stuck with pokemon). They don't help tell where the machine is or what its for, but they work.
