I bought my only mac, an iBook, two months ago. I think I'm friggin' entitled to a discount after giving apple $1600. If I was going from 9 to 10.2 that would be one thing. Instead I'm going from 10.1.4. That's BS.

I'm a "switcher" and this is what I've seen so far: No upgarde price (even MS offers that) and moving from free iDisk to $100/year. I can understand charging something for iDisk, but $100 (not taking into account the $50 upgrade price (which is at least somewhat reasonable))?? Apple went from being "the cool company" to the "how else could we possibly gouge our customers? company"

People tend to equate that since I can only lift 50 pounds, I'll be killed off sooner, but i is more about one's ability to procreate. Of course this assuming that I make it to the age of sexual maturation. Unlikely if I am a weaking.

Ummmmm... isn't this exactly what drives the sale of upper end PC's? Games and video editing (the former driving sales since forever, the latter more recently)?

Anyway, what you're paying for is the quality and the convenience. One reason I ditched my discman (and to be honest don't own a portable yet) is because I hate lugging around even five CD's with me. This thing holds 100's. On top of that, it doesn't skip and it's easy to navigate. If it had an input port for recording I would have bought one a long time ago (though 400 clams is still pretty steep).

Is Emacs bloated? Yes. Do I use it for 75% of the things it can do? No. Can I use one text editor on every OS I work on easily and productively? Yes, and that's why I use it when I do.

Though this isn't justifying bloat in any sense, we're in the days where a 60 gig drive is standard on a machine. Isn't a 50 MB functional text editor just as good if not better than a less functional 830K text editor back in the days of 1 gig drives? They take up the same space ratio wise. It's 50 megs. That is nothing compared to most drives today, or even most programs. Geez, Diablo II takes up a gig and a half!

The only console to ever sell at $600 was the Neo Geo and that was because they literally put an arcade board into the console. Games were $200 each and the console sold abysmally. PS2 and XBox were both $299, Gamecube was $199. Those have been the most expensive to date.

As for hardware devaluation, look at a PC. The computer I bought 3 years ago for $3500 is literally worth about $500, and that's including the $250 speakers and all the RAM and HD space I added in afterwards. Consoles are generally a good value and don't depreciate at such a rate unless they're made by Sega. DC anyone? :-(. Over the course of a consoles life (4 - 5 years), you can expect the price to drop to approximately half of the original price. The only real exception is the gameboy. Every 3 years, they release a new version at approximately $80-$90, with the old versions selling for approximately $50. Not quite a 1/2 discount, but no one buys them once the new system is out anyway. There's no reason to since the new version plays all the old games, something that only the PS2 currently does

If I remember the Lucas-blessed "Shadows of the Empire" novel correctly, the Han Solo guy for SOTE's brother became a stormtrooper and that's why pseudo-Solo hated the Empire.

I thought the same thing, i.e. that consolidation was the way to go. For once my procrastination paid off: I too live in Boston (rent is atrocious) and have a large amount of debt. I need a way not just to manage it, but to get rid of it. American Express has Financial Advisors come in to work every now and then and give a spiel, pretty much fishing for new clients. Well one of them this past time is married to one of my co-workers and the couple times I've met him, he seemed pretty mature and smart, so I went for the free consultation. I told him about my debt issues and that I had considered going the way of Ameridebt (and others). He said that though consolidating is not the same as bankruptcy, it _does_ put a mark on your credit for 7 years, much like bankruptcy. We're working on a way now to pay off my debt _and_ save some money without damaging my credit.
