I have the strategic commander and yes, it can handle combinations of keys. I occasionally use it for TFC/Half-life and can program in commands (for when my binds get stuck) like ~-E-X-E-C-SPACE-A-U-T-O-E-X-E-C-.-C-F-G-~ to go to concole and exec autoexec.cfg and return to the game just by pressing a button. It suffices (barely, but suffices) for FPS, but its main focus is RTS. It also is not supposed to be a replacement for a mouse. You say select a group of infantry with the mouse, click button 1 (which has the command "group selected into GROUP1 and send them to the rally point") and off they go to do what they should.

It feels a little weird too because its bigger than a mouse and you use your left hand (sorry lefties, it ain't uni-handed) but after a while it feels natural and with up to 24 buttons per setting (and 3 settings = 72 buttons) its pretty cool.
Or I should feel sorry for the people that get moderated down like I did. Guess I should feel special that someone wasted a moderation point on me rather than modding up a worthwhile comment. Good job moderator! Now everyone that browses at 1 won't see me (does anybody still browse at 1?).
Why is this a 5?? There are much more informative, interesting, etc comments out there.
That aside, the DVD functionality is pretty decent. Not great, but decent. Besides, if I want to watch my DVD's in the living room instead of my study, I can move the PS2 (a lot easier than moving my PC). Do I have a 120" SONY WEGA HDTV with 5.1 9000 watt speakers? No. I have a 25" TV that the PS2 works fine with. If you're looking for a DVD player and you really care that much, you probably aren't looking at the PS2 anyway. You're probably looking at a $400 DVD player.
The PS2 is a nice piece of hardware with some fun games. It plays DVDs. That's it. It won't cook for you, it won't churn out works of literature, it won't deliver you from evil. Are people pissed because SONY hyped it, or because they let themselves be hyped or even still, are they pissed because nobody bought the hype and the "I'm cool because I didn't buy the hype" club is not so exclusive?
EB has a policy that for $30 you can get a warranty that basically states "For any reason you need to replace it, we'll do it for free". That includes you stepping on it, running over it with your car, whatever. You say "It's broken, take it." They say "OK, here ya go". Lastly, I know the EB near me had two PS2's specifically for returns and they only got about 50 PS2's.
Will people PLEASE stop trying to create/recreate a system war? F**king A people! I have both. I love them both. I also love my N64. I brought my new PS2 with me this weekend to a friend's house and everyone said it was great. They all said they wanted to get one, especially since its a DVD player too. But, I lent my DC to a friend for a while and even though he pre-ordered a PS2, he went out and bought a DC because its great too.
And who ever posted the screen shots of the two cars, could you be more biased? A) you're comparing different games. B) you never mention what the shots were taken on. If I take a screen shot (I couldn't) of a DC game through my Monitor (the VGA adapters by pass the 'puter, hence no screen shot) and put it next to a screen shot of a game running through an RF apater for my PS2, of course the DC is going to look better.
My advice, rent them both, go to a site like IGN or Daily Radar, find games they gave their highest rating to for each system, rent those, and when you've played them all, buy the one you want. It's that figgin simple.
"News for nerds"?? This is more like "Bickering for Lamers"
I live in Watertown (just outside of Boston) and I use RCN. I know they're not in some parts of Beantown, but they were entering the Fenway when I left ($1200 a month for a tiny one bedroom?? c'mon!) so it might be worth a shot. I get local phone service, long distance at $.09/minute, no long distance carrier fee, cable modem (usually around 125KB/sec down (KB, not Kb)), and 80 cable channels including 5 HBO and 3 skinemax for $109 a month (Resilink Gold). I love 'em (excpet for the issues we had back during the Verizon strike with our phone). I don't know what sort of package would be for you, but its a pretty nice deal and my 3rd month (this one) is free.1-800-ring-rcn
I think you have a very good point (though I'm a sheep and anxiously awaiting mine). The only thing I will contend is the price issue. It won't be cut in half in by February. It took two years for the original PSX to drop to half of what it originally cost (life cycle for a console is max 5 years). The Dreamcast JUST came down to $150 a year after its launch (down only $50 or 25%) so saying it will be half of what it will be at launch in February (especially when the other 500K out of 1M be shipping) is misleading to the other sheep.
Its not the size, its what you do with it. How the VRAM is used is up to the developers. If they don't push every ounce they can out of it, yeah, the graphics will suck. The biggest stumbling block has been wrapping their heads around how to do it. Volition for instance managed to do it and Summoner looks great. The Namco kids figured it out too and are redoing Ridge Racer V and Tekken Tag. The latest batch of screenshots look a lot better than the versions that came out at the japanese launch.
Are you saying that my HP I just bought (as a router box kids) that has "up to 11 MB of video RAM" (its integrated AGP ala Intel) will have better graphics capability than a PS2 because its 11 as opposed to 4? Trust me, I doubt it.
If you can get Deus Ex to run on an $800 'puter, show me. On my PIII 500, with 256 RAM and a 32 MB TNT2 Ultra, it still crashes, AND I've dl'ed the d3d patch. But I've never had a problem with any of my cosoles. Nor had to patch them.
At EB the price tag will be $299. I'm going to pay it in a month anyway, so I went and paid it in full a couple weeks ago (I'd rather get hit over two months for $300 than in one for $600 (games, contollers, etc)). I also contacted them today and asked "Well what if everybody pays it off?" They said "You'll have one, don't worry". Kinda sad that I know them all on a first name basis (and I've only talked to them _at_ EB).
Ridge Racer V will be a launch title though and listed as PSMs (sorry, in the mag, no link) Top 5 must have PS2 games (others were SSX, Tekken Tag, Summoner, and Dead or Alive Hardcore).
They're far from the fastest things on the road (124bhp, ~2100lbs), but that's not what they're about. They're all about style and fun. Just like the old MG B's and Midgets, but 1000x more reliable.
Baloney (bolonga). The bacwards compatability is lik 95% and there is (though mainly texture smoothing) some enhancements to some games (Metal Gear Solid being one of them). Will PS2 live up to the hype? Who knows, but it could, and a lot of the japanese launch games have been retweaked to take advantage of the hardware anti-aliasing that Volition figured out.

btw, DC ($150) + one game ($50) = good DVD player for $100? Please.
At the time Mario was released, it was the epitome of what a 3d game should be. It was revolutionary. Looking at it now you might think it had horrible control, but as far as camera control, very few games match it. But its your opion and you're entitled to it.
What?? Granted Nintendo didn't have _tons_ of great titles but Perfect Dark, Zelda, Banjo Kazooie, Mario Party, Mario Tennis, and Mario 64 all come to mind off the top of my head. You're doing yourself a disservice if you haven't played these.
If in the future, wars were carried out on consoles? You have two virtual armies and which ever won got their way?? Of course, not having real guns and real bombs kinda makes it hard to intimidate people....
From the www.riaa.org website: "What is your stand on MP3?
This is one of those urban myths like alligators in the toilet. MP3 is just a technology and the technology itself never did anything wrong! There are lots of legal MP3s from great artists on many, many online sites. The problem is that some people use MP3 to take one copy of an album and make that copy available on the Internet for hundreds of thousands of people. That's not fair. If you choose to take your own CDs and make copies for yourself on your computer or portable music player, that's great. It's your music and we want you to enjoy it at home, at work, in the car and on the jogging trail. But the fact that technology exists to enable unlimited Internet distribution of music copies doesn't make it right. To learn more about digital music, visit the Music and the Internet section."
Ahhhh... it says it has been released, but at the end it says it will be available from late August (the article was on 07/31 and the announcement wasn't on their US site then (that I know)). I just know my local stores don't have it.:-( Maybe I'll just have to buy a copy of Red Hat (hey I own a share or two, might as well) until I can find it.:-)
Now _this_ is news for nerds and matters. This is what I read/. for: Stuff that I have to read and reread a time or two to fully digest. I feel more informed and enriched. Cool.
