What was so great about Silence of the Lambs is that it gets inside your head. There wasn't much gore at all. If I remember correctly, most of the nasty stuff was shown when they were looking at crime scene photos and such, not really live action. Hannibal Lecter getting inside your mind is much scarier than blood, guts, and brains.

Too bad Ridley Scott totally blew it. This could have been a great film, though it would have probably taken Jodie Foster, Jonathan Demme (director), and Tak Fujimoto (dp) from the original SotL to pull it off.

Especially disappointing to me, because it was the first time I went to the movies in 8 months. Now it's just reaffirmed my desire to stay away.

Actually, I don't have a choice here. I live in Burlington, Vermont and the only theatres here are all run by a shitty company called Hoyt's. There is the "Nickelodeon" downtown, which is absolutely terrible... I think only half the movies there are ever in surround sound, and the screens are tiny. Yet they charge $8 for a movie.

Luckily (relatively speaking) I saw Hannibal at the Cinema 9, which has somewhat bigger screens, and some type of surround sound (though nothing I would say is up to current standards).

It is really a disappointing situation.

I came here from Atlanta, where there are AMC theatres with Dolby Digital, dts, and SDDS surround sound, stadium seating, huge screens and reasonable ticket prices (student discounts any time). It really does suck when your only option is a crappy monopoly theatre that doesn't give two shits about your movie-going experience, but still charges you like you're going to get a first-class treatment.

I really wish a better chain like AMC would move in here and put these Hoyt's assholes out of business.

Two years ago I lived in Murfreesboro, Tennessee (near Nashville) and there was a "cheap seats" theatre, that - I shit you not - for $1.50 had more comfortable seating, better sound, and better screens that the mainstream $8/movie theatre in town. Ha! Now that was funny. Guess who got all the college kids business? I wish there was more theatres like that. There really isn't any good reason for the skyrocketing ticket prices, when only a select few theatres are actually giving us bigger screens and better sounds (most screens are actually getting smaller, even in the brand new complexes). UGH.

And for the record, I never ever visit the snackbar. They're getting enough money as it is.

  14. Product placement on Hannibal's Return · · Score: 4

"Hannibal" was entertaining, but not a masterpiece like "The Silence of the Lambs". Poor Julianne Moore, I just couldn't ever see her as Clarice. She seemed to be overacting and trying too hard.

Anyhow, what I really want to talk about is product placement. What are these directors thinking nowadays? It seems like ever since 1994 or so, that product placement has become so blatant that it actually distracts you from the movie.

Did anyone notice the computer screen near the beginning of "Hannibal" that said "NetZERO" on it in like 4 different places? I mean, what the fuck? Is Ridley Scott not making enough money, that he has to take payments from NetZERO to slap their logo all over a computer screen??? That was so distracting.

And to a lesser extent, the mention of GUCCI everywhere. That is so ridiculous.

This is almost as bad as the films that incorporate current pop culture. Like using slogans or catch phrases, or making fun of current advertisements (I see this a lot)... don't they realize that not only is this distracting, but it also immediately dates the film? What happens 5 years from now when everyone forgets why some black guy saying "Whazzzuuuuuuup!" is so funny?

Another thing I have noticed is now they are running advertisements at the beginning of movies. Before Hannibal there were commercials for antacids and soft drinks. (I haven't been to the movies in probably 8 months so I don't know when this started).

    WHAT?!?!??!???

Let's see... product placements in movies that are already going to make millions (do they really need the extra money to put in blatant product placements? PLEASE!). And ads before movies, while ticket prices still go up? I mean, I wouldn't mind sitting through a Sprite commercial, if it meant my ticket was only $5, but if I'm paying $8 why do I need to sit through commercials?

Movie going used to be such a pleasurable experience. Now I realize, once again, why I only go once every several months. Hey movie studios, I'm not your fucking advertisement consumer bitch, so stop trying to make me bend over!

I was talking with my girlfriend about this the other day. I don't get it. She doesn't either. And we're both weird and geeky... yet extremely bored by video games. Why do people spend most of their free time playing these games like Quake?

Are you learning anything? How is it rewarding?

I suppose the standard answer will be "because it's fun/entertaining"... can you explain how? They all seem the same to me. What is the thrill of sitting down for 3 hours (or more) to just run around and shoot aliens?

I used to be into video games back in the late 80's and early 90's when games were simple, and took less than 3 hours to finish. Now most games these days are just crazy, taking days or months to finish.

What about the real world outside? Do you hardcore gamers actually go out and walk around and appreciate the real world around you? Do you prefer to interact in real life with other people?

I guess the reason I don't play games is the same reason I don't really watch TV much... I feel like I'm doing absolutely nothing, my life just ticking away...

Please, somebody, explain what it is that attracts you to video games and what satisfaction you get from it. I'm (and I'm sure others) are genuinely curious.

Not sure who originally compiled this info but I thought it would be useful to those out there who are on the fence about whether to vote for Nader or Gore.

    -----

To make the numbers case is Steve Cobble, a Nader supporter but one who, as an advisor for Jesse Jackson and many others, has earned a reputation as one of the most acute analysts of voter patterns and the arcane machinations of the political system. Cobble broke down the numbers in an article for TomPaine.com, and came to this conclusion:

"Except for a very small number of states, progressives have a free vote. They can vote their conscience for Ralph Nader, and help him get the 5 percent he needs to build a new fourth party. In at least two-thirds of the country, and perhaps as many as nine states out of ten, a vote for Ralph Nader is not a vote for George Bush. It's really a vote for Ralph Nader."

Here is Cobble's run down, state by state:

    (1) Safe for Bush (17 states): Alabama, Alaska, Idaho, Indiana, Kansas, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Wyoming.

In these states, every progressive can vote for Nader knowing that they are not endangering the Supreme Court in any way.

    (2) Leaning toward Bush (7 states): Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Georgia, Kentucky, Nevada, New Hampshire.

Same basic rule -- in these states, progressives can vote for Ralph safe in the knowledge that none of these states are absolutely necessary to build a winning electoral coalition for Gore.

    (3) Safe for Gore (15 states): California, Connecticut, D.C., Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, Tennessee, West Virginia, Vermont.

In these states, progressives can not only vote safely for Nader, they can each recruit one or two other friends to vote for Ralph, secure in the knowledge that George Bush has given up (or will give up in early October) on winning these electoral votes.

    (4) Leaning toward Gore (7 states): Delaware, Iowa, Michigan, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Washington, Wisconsin.

These states are likely to end up in Gore's column, unless he badly blows the debates. If they do maintain his current lead, then progressives are secure in voting for Nader.

    (5) Toss-up (5 states): Florida, Louisiana, Missouri, New Mexico, Ohio.

In these five swing states, the Ivins Rule applies most strongly -- check the state polls right before election day, then make your judgment.

If you really think about it, RXC is really just a guy who happened to do the right things at the right time (and I mean that with all due respect), and now he has the power to meet and interview ANYONE in the tech industry (and probably has already). He probably also gets to see most every new piece of software and hardware months before anyone outside of the company knows about it. His opinion is highly valued. I wouldn't be surprised if he knew about the new Apple G4 Cube waaaay before the Expo last week.

I wish I could go into the stories he told, but most of the stuff is either just expansion of what he talks about in his "I, Cringely" column, or it's just not for public consumption. :-)

Here is a good anecdote. Considering how high profile RXC is, think about how many other people with similar positions would do the following... not many I would guess.

The Macworld event that he attended? Basically a private gathering of journalists and webmasters from a few medium-sized Mac websites (MacOPINION [the site I used to run/own], Applelinks, My Mac).

How did we get Cringely to speak at our gathering? We just asked. Of course, we paid for his plane ticket, fancy dinner, and such, but that's it. He didn't charge any kind of outrageous fee or anything (afaik).
