Future Of IDS
·
· Score: 1
The problem with snort and almost all other IDS systems is pattern matching.
In other words, every packet that enters the system (detection area, based on whether the detection is network based or host based).
The cause and effect is two fold. A packet with a string contained therein may be detected falsely as an attack can be masked by using unicode or shell code, etc.
the second effect is that since each packet or stream is matched against every pattern in the database, is that the engine is easily bogged down and with some simple techniques, can be made to drop packets in order to not kill itself off.
There is no perfect solution for this that I know of..
however, there are more efficient ways to handle both these problems.
Packet and Stream disassembly can be used to reduce the amount of overhead and greatly reduce the anmount of mis-detections (both false positive and false negative).
First, breaking down the stream to determine protocol, source, destination, payload, etc..
once a stream is broken up, analyzing it for content is much simpler and quicker becuase you dont have to check all the unklreated traffic against all the signatures in the database.. only those which pertain to the specific protocol in use, if any matching is necessary at all.
Now.. this technique can be done right and be done very wrong. do it wrong and youll spend much more time disassembling things and using more resources than the pattern matching engines.
Doing it right means quickly limiting the amount of matching that needs to be done and reducing overhead even in high traffic situations.
Of course, as with any method, there are weaknesses. This method can reduce cpu and memory requirements, increase accuracy and reduce false negatives and false positives.
As another colleague pointed out, IDS is an early warning system. In any of its incarnations, its nearly innefective without escalation and constant monitoring.

IBM AT style ps/2 keyboards.
you can get them very cheap.
I like to have a good stock of them around and use them on all my desktop systems.
nice anc clicky.. never wear out.. will withstand almost any abuse..
Plastic and metal.. very heavy.. very durable.
no wonder you go through so many keyboards..
those $10 keyboards are the worst made pieces of garbage you can get. Theya re not designed to suffer any misuse thus the ridiculous pricetag.
I recommend findin a nice northgate keyboard..
the company is no longer in business but the keyboards are durable and comfortable. Almost as durable as the original IBM AT style keyboards..
the IBM AT style ps/2 keyboards are the most durable, best built keyboard you will find.. I personally have collected a few of these are they are no longer manufactured.. each one, at least 5 year old or older works perfectly..
Now mind you, i am rather nice to my keyboards.. dont spill stuff in them and I clean them out once in a while.. but the keyboards never miss a key.
IF you spill something on these keyboards, you may not even notice.. If you make a real mess.. you can just hose down the keyboard with water.. yes.. you can even put them in the shower.. Just make sure to let them completely dry out before trying to plug them back in.
You can probably pick a handful of them on ebay for under $20 on ebay.. A friend of mine found a stock of 10 of these for that amount and one will outlast all the other keyboards you have ever used. These things are heavy.. metal parts and strong tactile feedback.
I will never get rid of these keyboards..
It just goes to show that IBM CAN make a product that will outlast all its competitors.
Since they are no longer made, I always want to make sure I never run out.
Be cautioned though.. these are the click type keyboards that were a bit more popular in the "80's" and make a fair amount of noise when used.. Thankfully, that is my preference.
Good luck and good keyboarding...

It might seem ridiculous to some of us that someone gets sued for creating a hideous web page. I check out this web portal and it is in fact hideous. The suit may be justified in this case if a business agreement was made or money changed hands for the development of this web site. Unless this page was created by razorfish as a gift or a favor, the company that entered into the agreement may well be justified in brining this suit. 1. if razorfish was paid to create a site and given certain guidelines for its content, it could be liable for breach of contract. 2. if as part of a special offer where creation of a viable e-commerce source was based on some other service agreement. If the service provider offers such a service, even if it is an added incentive or special offer to use such a service, the provider must provide those services in good faith. Now aesthetics is subjective at best and a difficult subject to judge when you are unfamiliar with the original agreement. The good and services offered must have tenable value. If the value of such a service is 5 minutes of html programming, was the service done in good faith. Was it conducive with the original agreement between the provider and the customer. Based on the agreement which is unknown, is the provider liable for services not performed? that is based ont he agreement. Personally, if I had made an agreement with anyone knowing that the invesment i made procured me 5 minutes of development time from a web developer for the production of what might be a source of income, I would expect to be shot.. or at least about the head with a wiffle ball bat repeatedly. just my 40Lira
The problem with this shootout was that it was not at all representative of the strengths and weaknesses of either system. It was more of a comparison to see which system more closely matched the sought after functionality of windows. Every argument seemed bogus.
Becky couldnt contain her childish"my father is bigger than your father attitude and made some rather nonsensical statements. "The Mac has offered USB support from day one." Day 1 would be when?? the coming of Christ? some time in the early 80's or at the inception of the IMac sometime within the last 2 years. Seems like history is a bit vague here. I could go on for days.. but since I have more sense than that and more respect I wont.

Pull off Highway 101 at the Bowers Avenue exit and head into the city of Santa Clara. Go west into the heart of the town's digi-zone. Within three blocks you've passed USWeb, Advanced Micro, Applied Materials, and Intel. You've also passed five polluted tracts the state is remediating - including the oh-so-picturesque former home of Magnetics Peripherals, now a fenced-off dirt lot with Freon-laden groundwater - and Intel's Superfund site. Drive a few more blocks and you've gone past two more areas rated "worst of the worst" by the EPA.
This is a very frightening article. Imagine in 20 years when the soil throughout this area is saturated with chemicals.. I wouldnt want to raise my family there. But then, its probably too late for me.. My office window overlooks intel and hwy 101. I can see all of these companies outside of my window. By the time I come down with cancer from the limited exposure, there might be no recourse. I have driven by these places and seen these land monitoring installations and it frightens me more knowing how close I am to them every day.
My original evidence: Read the religous recovery newsgroups. The vast majority of people posting messages suffer from the abuses of _Chrsitians_, not Scientologists.
In the middle ages, dissention of the church could carry heavy penalties and undue torture. In american society, this is no longer the norm with most organized religions. Scientology is the exception here. They still regularly make threats of legal and physical action against those who speak out against Scientology.
Regardless of my position on Scientology, I would take careful consideration in speaking out against them in a public forum (aside from/.) based on thier history.
In case it isnt evident, the point I am making is that many people would rather put up with some harrassment than draw negative attention to themselves from this cult.
I can punch and slander the catholic church, christians, and most other organized religions with near impunity. Scientologists are another beast entirely.
People threatening to leave the church after attaining a level of knowledge I call "Aliens built my society." are threatened with physical violence. Anyone within the church who makes public any religious doctrine will be pursued both legally and personally. As I recall, at least one such incident ended in the murder of the dissenter.
I have been doing research on the digital cameras on the market for some time. All of the camera seem to have one major fault in my eyes. Each and every camera stores images in jpeg. Jpeg is very space efficient, but is a lossy compression scheme which is unuseable to a professional photographer.
Except for one. The Olympus C2500L captures not only in jpeg compressed format allowing for a large number of photos, but is also capable of capturing uncompressed images which are saved in TIF format. It will also capture a small amount of quicktime video. The camera will capture images in resolutions up to 1712x1368 and is easily upgradeable to 96+MB of storage. * SHQ-Tiff for uncompressed 1712 X 1368 pixel images--for true photo quality images
* SHQ-JPEG with low 1:2.3 compression 1712 X 1368 pixel images--for true photo quality images
* HQ-JPEG with low 1:8 compression 1712 X 1368 pixel images--ideal for high quality photo printing
* SQ-JPEG SVGA 1280 X 1024 pixel images--photo-realistic 8 X 10 inch prints from a photo-quality printer or high quality email photos
* SQ-JPEG VGA 640 X 512 pixel images--perfect for Internet use or to email friends and family.
The camera carries a weighty pricetag but for my purposes, there is no alternative. This camera sells for between $1300-$1500US. I often do photo editing/manipulations and uncompressed is the only way to go.

If I had investors and backing from some newly freed musical acts, here is what i would do.
I would start a label strictly based on internet demand and distribution. This is obviously the wave of the future and i dont see any way around it.
In order to sign talent, I could negotiate a contract whereby the musician would recieve in the realm of 80% of the profits of the sales of the music.
a small internet based company could easily make do with a couple million dollars a month. 20% of just a few big name acts could bring in at least this much.
Distribution would be simple. customers would navigate the site with the ability to listen to lower quality version of these new songs in say (mp3 format) for example.
customers would them choose specific songs and purchase these songs individually or as part of a group and purchase these for a small fee.. I realize this sounds similar to pre-existing markets, but its model does not deal with the current breed of money grubbing middlemen.
after selections are made and songs are purchase, the user is shipped a CD/DVD of the selected music in either red book audio format or mp3.
the musician is happy because he/she will make far more profit from the sale of singles/albums and can also contribute to the distribution process.
And I can be happy with my paltry sum of a few million dollars a year.
then the music industry can be a kinder/friendlier place where the real creators are compensated more fairly.
The drawbacks here are that with a lower budget as part of the label, wining and dining acts to convince them to sign would not be possible.
The musicians be more responsible for thier finances and thier future.

In the middle ages, dissention of the church could carry heavy penalties and undue torture. In american society, this is no longer the norm with most organized religions.
Scientology is the exception here. They still regularly make threats of legal and physical action against those who speak out against Scientology.
Regardless of my position on Scientology, I would take careful consideration in speaking out against them in a public forum (aside from /.) based on thier history.
As I recall, at least one such incident ended in the murder of the dissenter.

the greatest danger are those who sound sincere and logical, but who push an agenda that does not follow your own beliefs.

* SHQ-Tiff for uncompressed 1712 X 1368 pixel images--for true photo quality images
* SHQ-JPEG with low 1:2.3 compression 1712 X 1368 pixel images--for true photo quality images
* HQ-JPEG with low 1:8 compression 1712 X 1368 pixel images--ideal for high quality photo printing
* SQ-JPEG SVGA 1280 X 1024 pixel images--photo-realistic 8 X 10 inch prints from a photo-quality printer or high quality email photos

"Good Times"
This seems to resurface ever few years or so inciting people on usenet and irc and generally is a pain in the butt.
I know its an old cliche:
" 'Government Intelligence' is a contradiction in terms. "
Ill be watching and waiting as someone of means pilfers this idea makes bucks. just email me and Ill send you my address for you to start sending me the money.
