I recall in the 70's, Mom home by 3:30 (teacher), Dad home by 5 (engineer). Mom worked on dinner when she got in...Dad got home, they would sit and talk together, then we would have dinner. 6:30 and Dad was watching Walter Chronkite while we did the dishes.
Fast forward to today: With my 11 yo son and my wife, we are lucky to eat dinner by 8pm. The first shot of any news on the tube is the 10pm news show, and mainly for headlines and the weather updates for the upcoming day (in Mass, snow?, etc).
Face it; RSS feeds, cell phone updates, a computer everywhere - what is the "Evening News" going to tell me other than what slant the network broadcasting is taking on a particular subject (IE: Why I need to bail out those who took mortgages they can't pay). I read what I want, and read multiple sources and gather my own opinion. Talking heads ? Soon to all be on a News Anchor Realty Show...
I bought a G4 Powerbook 4 years ago after years of Microsoft certs, etc. I simply wanted to convert videos to DVD and after looking at all options, the Mac made sense. Best move I ever made. I now look at computer operations in a whole new light.
As an Active Reservist in the US Navy, I see troubles ahead for the Reserves as this number not only continues to grow with Apple taking a greater slice of the pie, but the younger set buying them at a much faster pace. Presently, the Navy backbone of it computers is the NMCI Network (I refer to it as the "Big Dig" of computer networks ie: Boston Tunnel / leaks). This network requires it's members to use a CAC Reader with their ID for access to almost all of it's sites (eventually, all sites). This is strictly Windows based only. Although they 'have' OSX drivers, two issues here; 1. does not work, and 2. all of the internet programming is based for IE 6.0+, and not available for OSX. There is the argument that users can run Windows on the Mac, but many want nothing to do with Windows, and now with the release of Numbers (Excel), there desire to refrain from having MS is even greater.
What is going to cause the Reserves problems down the road, the Reservist having Macs at home will have to travel to Reserve Centers (some areas are a 3 to 4 hour drive) just to do course, check records, etc. The Reservists will do this only when compensated - rightfully so. If the Military does not recognize that they need to begin to work towards coding for systems outside of Windows, they will not only have a more difficult time getting the new younger generation to join, but the cost of doing business will grow tremendously due to not recognizing the students today will be the Sailors of tomorrow - and they are not using their Dad's OS....
What is the big deal? Every commercial I see has about 350+ people walking around. If there "was" a "fire", can you imagine how big the Chinese Water Drill line would have been. FIRE=out in seconds.
It's the Network...
Interesting that Wal-Mart will have movies for d/l, but no allow a user to put them on the Zune (all 3 people who own them are upset), the PSP (isn't that what Handbrake is for), or that other player that 'some' own known as the iPod. If d/l a movie is only good for the PC / Laptop, then they miss out on the generation today that takes it all with them. Given the limits of Windows Media Player, and the upcoming Apple TV, this is yet another 'news item' that will prove they are missing the boat on the iPod generation.
In addition, most movie studios were not entering into deals with iTunes for fear of Wal-Mart. Now that they will offer d/l's, the movie studios have no reason not to allow iTunes as well. Given the amount of $ Disney, etc is getting from iTunes sales, they will go for the bottom line = profit.

I am sure he is working on the upgraded version. But don't forget - Google will be black. In fact, so will /. !
In the event of a water landing, your laptop will need to be used a flotation device.
I wonder if Al gore will take credit for creating the Internet Tax too ?
but with MS Windows - UBSOD = Unlimited Blue Screens of Death for all!
I don't get it. I'm having no problem playing Leisure Suit Larry on my Windows 95 machine...
All that matters is that the great porn soundtrack music (bom-chick-bow-bow) is in 5.1 Digital Surround Sound!
